“Friendly welcome”
Reviewed 16 May 2014

We picked this hotel as it came up as number one in Wick on trip advisor. We were very pleased on arrival as everyone was very friendly and welcoming. We arrived late and was agin pleased to find that the restaurant was open and the food was very nice (we had the fish and chip option (Haddock) and it was not the average meal at all, it was fresh, tasty and really enjoyable. The fish was local which was a nice surprise. The room was comfortable and quiet. We would stay here again.

Dear Gypsy D

Thank you for your feedback.

Glad you enjoyed your fish and chips, mostly caught by a Wick boat, The Boy Andrew, and landed at Scrabster and the team added to the enjoyment of your stay.

Hope you enjoyed your visit to our lovely county and had time to explore all the attractions.

Have a safe journey home.
Kind regards
Ellie Lamont

We visit Wick every year and always stay at Mackays because of the comfort, food and great welcome. This year was no different. Lovely welcome, great food and lovely refurbished family room. The service is really brilliant and all the better for being genuine and effortless - that takes some doing. Nothing too much trouble for the staff and they are all very helpful and friendly. All the food is sourced locally and freshly prepared. Looking forward to going back up next May, or earlier if we can manage. Happily recommend this to anyone travelling up to Wick and the far North - great base for touring. Big thanks to Murray and all the staff for looking after us.

After a very long day of driving my husband and I looked up places to stay in Wick and lucky for us Mackays is what we found. Arriving a bit late, no reservations, hungry and traveling with a 20-month old baby, they had us in a very comfortable room within minutes and a table waiting for us in the restaurant when we came down to eat 10 minutes later. The service from check in to restaurant was friendly, attentive and just fantastic overall. The food was excellent (and not just because we were hungry!). We liked the people, the food and the place so much we spent the day at the Orkney Islands and came back for a second night stay. Again, table at restaurant waiting for us when we got there and a table set up with high chair and all for breakfast the next morning...just in case we had time for breakfast before leaving. Really, I can't say enough good things about our experience here, just really beyond expectations!!

Had a wonderful stay and a great meal in Mackays Hotel. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. The food was beautifully presented and very tasty. Lovely chat with the owner and cuddle with Max the dog. Would recommend this hotel for food, drink, overnight stay or any combination. Thank you for the generous hospitality.

My wife and I wanted a hotel close to the station as we were having a holiday using the North Highland Railway. Mackays is within easy walking distance. We had a room on the floor first with a good view overlooking the river and town. The room was large and clean with all the facilities you would expect. All staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful always wanting to provide good service. During our three night stay we always eat in the attached restaurant No1 Bistro. The food was of good quality but perhaps a little expensive. The menu was not extensive but you could not really expect more given the limited catchment area for trade. Wick is a very quiet place but the small restaurant was full on the Saturday night with many local people. The owner was very hands on and extremely helpful with his local knowledge. He also had an extensive range of malt whiskies several of which were sampled.
We used the bus to get to John o Groats and Thurso with no problems.

Thank you for you kind comments.

We are so glad you enjoyed your time with us and the wedding. W have had so many comments from people that our ballroom looks really magical when it is 'dressed' and the lights are on.

Hope you had a safe trip home and had a chance to see some of our beautiful county

My husband and I had a lovely dinner here while visiting the area on holiday. Really nice locally sourced seafood starter, scallops with a smoked cauliflower purée followed by perfectly cooked steak. I'm very fussy with steak and find I'm often disappointed when eating out, not in this case, you could eat the steak with a normal knife. An example of how nice food can be when you source it locally.

Staff were friendly and helpful and I will happily return here with my family next time we are up in the area.
