Flying in? There's Ackergill Haven in the bay beyond Ackergill Tower
Only two miles out of Wick and Tesco and it looks like we're driving straight into the sea.
Past the re-built Sea Shore Cottage to Sea Otter's Front Door
Go in and turn left for the small living room.
New stove but new mantle shelf unaffordable so far.
But then look out through those french doors - and catch your breath!
When the tide's in - Hope I don't feel too seasick,!
Such amazing sunsets over the castle next door. At high tide every ripple in pink.
But maybe the tide's out when you arrive
Tide out.Never mind - the tide clock will tell when you will next see the waves up close.
What a view from the kitchen window, with a millionaire's restored castle next door
Gather around the table for breakfast
Downstairs Bathroom. Big bath. High quality shower
Just inside the front door. Turn right instead of left and see the cosy downstairs double bedroom.
Stairs a bit steep - So steep they would never be allowed under new building regulations.
But worth the climb - Is that an Oyster Catcher? Where's that sea bird book?
Top of the stairs on the right. That double bed looks welcoming.
Top of the stairs turn left - for the room with two single beds and the same spectacular views
Beautiful, rugged shoreline with lots of rock pools for children
Fancy having virtually our own private beach. Want a free holiday in return for a painting job?
No time to watch TV - watching the waves is so much more relaxing

We stayed here for 4 nights, 1st impression not great-then we saw the view. Nothing else mattered. Ok it needs a little updating but it was very clean and the beds were comfortable. The cottage was well equipped as well and although we only made breakfasts there we could have cooked a full meal as there was plenty of everything. The view is fabulous, we arrived in time for sunset which was beautiful. I even managed to get on the beach. No noise, only the sea. Perfect.

So many people love the location that whenever funds allow we try to do as much updating as we can afford. Slow progress with achieving all we would like to improve but well worthwhile for so very many guests - So far 20 different countries, and from 12 different USA states

“Enjoyable stay”
Reviewed 11 September 2017 for a stay in September 2017

It's easy to be critical of some detailed shortcomings at this property but that easily loses perspective when you consider the whole package. The accommodation is comfortable and the outlook is stunning. You do need a car when staying here as it's a long walk to Tesco and even longer to Wick. The outside lights need to sorted and the wiring tidied but we had a great time and had everything we needed. Prices are very reasonable and criticisms minor. Worth visiting.

Thank you for your reassurance concerning the whole package. Whenever funds allow we continue to try to improve the cottages as much as we are financially able since so many people love the location .

Pretty accomodation, beautiful location. Unforgettable midnight sunset sitting in peace...
In the morning time we saw a sea otter, seals and cows all around.
Perfect for family with children from 6 years old.
The owner's wife has been very kind during our staying.
Greetings from Italy!

“Weekend Wedding Accomodation”
Reviewed 12 August 2017 for a stay in August 2017

We were up for a wedding at Dunnet Head, and this really offered everything we needed. Lots of space, well equipped, clean, and not to mention the view... Wick town centre was a 2 mile walk away and just a few mins in the car. The large Tesco is also just 1.5 miles away so we had the best of both worlds- feeling like we were in a nice secluded, peaceful spot but also not too far from all of the local amenities. Will definitely be back if we're on the area again!

“relaxing place with great views”
Reviewed 9 July 2017 for a stay in July 2017

Great place, everything in the house you need, so homely and such a relaxing place with the beach on your doorstep, pet friendly and the dogs had a ball - only downside was it wasn't fenced in as stated - so was a bit annoying that I had to put the pup on a lead first thing in the morning and last thing at night rather than just being able to open the door but if fencing/gate was to be re-instated would definately be back.

Sad that the winter storms have so badly damaged the fencing. My apologies that the description on the website had not been updated to make this clear.

Hopefully enough guests will book all year round so that we can afford to repair the fencing as soon as possible,

Meanwhile other essential repairs e.g. new blinds upstairs and a new plate glass window in the kitchen (because the condensation impairs the view from the kitchen window) are well in hand already

But other repairs e.g. proper steps down to the beach etc will have to wait until funds allow.

At least the location remains as amazing as ever and hopefully you, like so many others, will be back someday

“Location is everything”

Location is everything with this cottage, if you are expecting luxury you will be disappointed.
Not pretty from the outside and a bit scruffy inside with wallpaper hanging from previous roofleak and misted doubled glazing, my first action was to clean the french doors inside and out so we could see the fabulous view.
It was OK for a couple of days and the heating was good. Bit expensive for two people.
Would only recommend for location.

Delighted to hear that
you appreciated this unique location,
especially the fabulous view northwards.
and the car-free walks along the coast in both directions.

Being so close to the sea,
keeping the windows adequately clean outside
remains a constant problem
but our apologies that the French doors
were not clean on the inside

By chance about 10 years ago, out walking early one morning,
I came across the property, on sale for a fixed price in two weeks.

And it seemed a shame if such a unique location
were to become a private (second?) home
rather than holiday-rental accommodation.

Unfortunately it has been a money pit
almost ever since
especially when a few years ago
what has been a very poor quality annexe
totally collapsed
when what should have been a metal (rather than plastic)
mains water pipe burst in the ceiling at 4 am

Only after the re-building had started
did it become clear that
a total rebuild right down to foundations
was essential
costing 4X as much
and taking 4X as long
to rebuild
compared with the original estimates.

We are thus still slowly re-paying a host of major debts

Sea Otter could certainly now do with even more spent on it
(for example replacing the partially misted kitchen window)
will have to wait until debts from the essential total rebuild
of what is now called Sea Shore Cottage have been recouped.

Hopefully if you are ever able
to return to either cottage
you will see a continuation of the steady improvements
every year for the past ten years
and you will feel able to give Sea Otter Cottage
the kind of star rating (average 4.7 out of maximum 5)
given by the vast majority
of our more than 1000 previous guests

Best wishes
