“OK but not as good as I thought it would be from the reviews”
Reviewed 16 September 2009

We made a special effort to visit Oakwood as the reviews on here and on the Oakwood website were so good.

The meal was good and we enjoyed it but it's not as amazing as the reviews on here made me think it was good. So we ended up leaving a little disappointed which is a shame cos it's not too bad at all really for a small restaurant.

The place itself is quite quaint with a room that's filled with little bits and pieces that you can buy and it had some 50's music which made it quite a nice atmosphere and a bit different to other places which I quite liked about it.

The service was a bit strange, we were served by the husband of the chef who came across as a bit offhand initially. At the end I think we thought he might have had just had an extremely dry sense of humour!

The food tasted really nice though, we had the lamb and the beef which were both lovely and served with a small tray of vegetables. The dessert was ok too. The restaurant has a BYOB policy too so bear that in mind if you want a drink whilst you're there, we went with a bottle of wine so were fine!

The price was quite reasonable for the area but the portions were quite small and we ended up needing some more food later!

To be honest I think if I'd found this place by chance I'd have been quite happy as the food did taste really good and it wasn't too expensive for the area. I'm not sure I'd have remembered it later but I wouldn't be too disappointed.

Give it a go, just don't read these reviews and think you'll be blown away.

“FOOD AS IT SHOULD BE - COOKED TO PERFECTION :)”
Reviewed 12 August 2009

We are local to Inverness and of all the restaurants in the city, this restaurant in it's beautiful location at Dochgarroch, next to the Caledonian Canal, provides the best food at the best quality and value for money. We have been going to the Oakwood Restaurant since we discovered it about 5 years ago and there isn't another restaurant to beat the quality of food anywhere else. The menu has a phenominal choice from venison, beautiful mouth watering, melt-in-your-mouth Orkney fillet stakes (you have to be quick to get these!) to smoked salmon and vegitarian and gluten free options. The atmosphere is quaint, quirky and wonderful with many antiques and curios on display and for sale. The BYOB (bring your own bottle) means you can drink the wine or beer you prefer, at your leisure with your meal. The staff couldn't be more helpful and we just want to thank Gabby and Gus for every wonderful meal we've had there over the years.
PS the chocolate cake is to die for!!
