I have stayed at MacDougall Clansman on a few occasions previously so had no hesitation in booking a night there on my way to the Western Isles.Lovely comfy and home-from-home hotel, right in the middle of town and near railway station and river walks. Only regret was I didn't stay longer on this occasion. Friendly and helpful staff, pleasant breakfast room, and very comfy bed.

Room Tip: I stayed on a double room and it was just lovely; the single rooms are pleasant too.

PLUSES
Service, attitude of staff
Met needs for special diet (soy milk)
Location - convenient to downtown and river
Internet included (arguably only in the lobby)

MINUSES
Noise from alley
Dust bunnies
Smell (musty?) in entrance foyer
Parking could be an issue, we lucked out with on-street parking free overnight.

The owner of this hotel is lovely and the service provided was excellent. The rooms were very nice considering the rates.

While this was very reasonably priced for a city centre hotel, and the lady owner was very helpful and accomodating, the building itself let the side down. The room was okay, a bit basic, no hairdryer, and a sticky shower door. There was quite a lot of noise in the early morning from trucks going past in the street. The decor was a bit tired, and there were pictures of the Queen around which appeared to be newspaper pull outs. When we came down for breakfast the ceiling of the breakfast room was leaking in two places, with towels and bowls on the floor to catch the drips. Not a great start to the day.

Centrally located the small Hotel / Guesthouse was a good choice. Since it was Sunday parking was no problem, on other days the lack of private parking space could be a matter. The interior was old fashioned, but clean and working. The room itself was fair sized, the bathroom small with toilett, sink and small shower.

The breakfast was freshly cooked and tasty, the service was friendly. Free Wifi was available.

It's everything a tourist needs in a hotel: centrally located (5 minute walk from train station), reasonably priced (40 pounds a night for one person), very friendly and accommodating management and staff, good breakfast, clean bathrooms, a good place to change clothes and shower and rest. No safe or fridge in rooms. Not much atmosphere outside, but inside the lobby is more like a living room. Dining area was Scottish, with mural of clansman and tartan drapes. If you don't want to pay an arm and a leg for your hotel, and you want all of the convenience of a nice tourist stop, I recommend this hotel.
