“Great value for money”
Reviewed 24 March 2010

Staff could not be more helpful and I got a very spacious and modern room with an excellent view of the adjacent church. Location superb and no bumped up prices for a single traveller. Breakfast was nicely done and had an excellent chat with local staff.

The Clansman's website made it look charming and like a good alternative to the big chain hotels, so we booked in for a night before setting off to walk the Great Glen Way.

Everything about this place was shaky and dated. The yellow-carpeted lobby with yellow ripple-glass doors should have warned us to turn back. The carpets in reception are worn and the pictures are faded. The receptionist seemed shocked to see us. But we had a reservation and ploughed on.

The receptionist (polite, but very timid) showed us to our room up a shabby staircase. The bedroom was tiny and the bathroom was seriously dated. For the amount we were paying this was a serious disappointment. The bed and room were both far too warm and we slept badly.

I genuinely don't think this hotel has had any investment made in it since the 1960s. It's like a time-warp. Maybe students of the history of the hospitality industry in the mid twentieth century would like this place.

We both wished that we had followed our instinct when we arrived and had walked back out the door. The galling thing was that, on our return to Inverness, we paid significantly less to stay somewhere nearby that was far, far nicer.

I stayed at the Macdougall Clansman recently whilst taking part in the Loch Ness Marathon. My friend and I had been let down by previous arrangements, and booked here a week before staying.

The hotel is family run and had been so since the early 60's. We were made very welcome by the owners from the moment we walked through the door and, even though we had arrived earlier than expected, we were still shown to our room, which was a very spacious and en suite. As there was no car park, were given directions to what I can only presume was the owners house, for somewhere to leave our car. Again, a fantastic reflection on they're hospitality.

The hotel is located centrally in Inverness, opposite a Wetherspoons, and a few other bars, which is handy in the fact its not too far for food and a beer, but there was some street noise during the night, which I am sure the other hotels on the same street would have endured also. There was also a small supermarket approximately 150 metres from the hotel. We only stayed bed and breakfast, which again, the owners were more than helpful with again, as they laid on toast and cereals for us runners who would have been out of the hotel by the time breakfast would have started. The second morning we did have a cooked breakfast which was made to order.

All in all, I am more than pleased with my stay here, and would certainly stay here again, but maybe not stay in a room on the top floor after 4 hours of running!!! Its certainly the top of my list if I run again next year.

Location is perfect. However when we went to check in, they didn't seem to have our reservation, then they did. We asked to see the room first, because the carpet in the front reception was ...well...wornout. The room was smoky and very small, in the back of the hotel. The bathroom was new, but same dingy carpet as downstairs. We exited the room and heard loud drunk talk and loud TVs and felt like a flop house.

£70 included breakfast. Since we had friends in a nearby town, we went and stayed with them instead. B&Bs in the area are about the same price, so a better value and stay.

One thing - it is clean. Just worn.

We stayed in MacDougall Hotel for two nights.
It is a very good value for money - excellent location (5min. walk from bus/train station, near the river and the centre), very clean and tidy.
The staff was very polite and helpful, be it about local trips or our own needs in the hotel and what we liked a lot that it was not the "professional" indifferent politness you encounter in big hotels but a genuine willingness to help!
Would definitely stay there again.
