Having read the very positive comments of guests, we had no hesitation in booking a 2 night stay here for the 5th/6th January. On our arrival at reception, we were asked for card details. When handed a Visa Debit card, the receptionist rather surprised us by saying that, if we used this card, then we would have to pay for any extras by cash, this included drinks. She obviously was having difficulties distinguishing between debit and credit cards as later we were able to order drinks in the normal fashion, the total being added to our bill. A finger-pointing ensued showing us the general direction of our room. As it was a particularly cold afternoon, we then had to work out by ourselves just how to operate the heating system in the bedroom and bathroom. We were told, however, that there would be no towels in our room until the laundry arrived!
The promised bottle of wine was in our room, but the minibar was bare! We then had to seek out a member of staff to show us the dining room and he suggested a drink in the large lounge beforehand. The dining room itself was fairly gloomy, but the meal was excellent. That night there were only 4 guests at dinner, so there was not much atmosphere. On our second night, however, we felt an instant chill in the lounge area, and discovered that all the radiators were cold. We moved as quickly as possible into the dining room, only to find the same there. As I was not dressed for Arctic conditions I asked the Restaurant manager if he would turn on the radiator beside me. He told me that he had, and that it would soon heat up. It never did, and he stayed away from our table thereafter! I declined the sweet and asked the waiter to bring the coffee to our room, where I consumed it under the warmth of my duvet.
On leaving the next morning, we were asked if we had enjoyed our stay. I replied that we had been very cold the previous evening, to which the young man replied "Yes, Steve did say that there was a problem with the boiler last night!" Miraculously the radiators were on during breakfast and it beggars belief that no alternative source of heat was available for guests the previous evening.
