“Fine for one night, but bedrooms are tired and in need of updating”
Reviewed 2 May 2011

The hotel is just outside of Inverness and situated on a beautiful piece of property. It's a quiet location and the rooms are huge. It should be noted that each room is different, so your mileage may vary. Our bedroom, while large and comfortable, was rather worn and in great need of being refreshed. Honestly, it wouldn't take much to bring the room up to a modern standard, so it is disappointing that the management is not more proactive. The bathroom on the other hand was in quite good shape, and also very large. So no complaints there.

I would also give high marks to the staff, which were very helpful and courteous. We passed on the restaurant, as we were not impressed by the menu that evening and it was rather pricey for what you got.

Stayed here for 1 night over the long weekend, wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy the beautiful setting of the hotel. Rooms were lovely and spacious, and they provide fresh milk to your room for tea/coffee. Highly recommended if you are travelling around Inverness!

Very helpful staff, comfortable lounges, good food and good whisky selection. Great surprise with the huge room I got (not sure if this was a one off upgrade). Loads of light, space and nice views.

Look forward to going back for personal use.

We travel all over the world and stay in many good hotels - this is the best! Nothing was too much trouble for the friendly staff who went out of their way to help in any way they could. The meals in the restaurant are among the best we have ever experienced. To top it all off, the location was perfect for both Inverness and Loch Ness and the peacefulness was amazing. We will definitely be returning!

Check in was smooth and quick and the friendly chap showed us to our very nice room (junior suite). He said there was complimentary water in the fridge and if we needed milk for tea/coffee they would bring it and we could keep it in the fridge - we were therefor a little surprised to open the cabinet and find no fridge (turns out it was in the gents toilet in the corridor along with lots of building materials!). I appreciate things break but to tell us it was there when it wasn't seemed a bit odd. When we went on to have a shower the whole room steamed up and we could see all the drawings previous guests had made on the windows - so clearly not regularly cleaned - but the more normal standard of cleaning was fine.
Went for a walk in the gardens and quite a whiff from the septic tank - which got worse into the evening, but I suppose it is the country.
The real disappointment was the food. Having read such glowing reviews I was expecting something rather special. It all started well - an amuse bouche of mushroom veloutte with white truffle oil which was delicious. Next up came the bread - purple potato foccacia which to be honest was rather heavy and doughy before starters. I had scallops which were well cooked but my husbands confit pigeon was really overcooked and hard. The palate cleanser of beetroot and oragne sorbet was good. Mains were the real problem. We both had duck and whilst the waiter used a cloth to put down the plates they were stone cold and subsequently everything on the plate was at best barely warm. The duck breast was tough and the confit again rather overcooked - although not disasterously so. The real oddity was the parsnip and vanilla puree was completely cold. I mentioned this to the waiter when he removed my plate and was told somewhat condescendingly that purees are always cold!!! Well what could I say - I have eaten at many far better restuarants and was unaware of such a social faux pas - can you imaging having the audacity to suggest a puree be warm. I was flabergasted by the way I was spoken to. The same waiter then came back again and told me he checked with chef and it's meant to be cold. Fair enough if this is in fact true but definitely no way to speak to a guest. Desserts were then fine.
The next morning at breakfast it wasn't much better - 2 pepper pots on the table, no salt, lipstick on my husbands tea cup, waiter knocked toast off my husbands plate while trying to set down his breakfast and the quality of the food was nothing better than average.
All in all moments some shining moments but then let down on the detail.

We were very pleasantly surprised with this hotel, wish there was a four and ½ star rating because that would be a more accurate description. The staff were absolutely excellent, really top notch. Although we only saw three staff during our entire stay it really felt that each of them wore many hats and did each job very well. We really can’t say enough good about them.
The location was great and our room (and the hotel in general) were full of charm and elegance. Breakfast was good, with prompt service and solid food.
The only SLIGHT negatives and we mean slight were the bed and a handful of very noticeable stains around the room. The bed was a good 4 star hotel bed, but nothing special, not overly or under comfortable. The stains... well they are just stains. The rest of the room was very clean but we were not about to sit on a sofa with a stain the size of a bowling ball. Nothing could be done about them short of recovering the furniture so they really aren’t a deal breaker just not great to look at.
Overall we were very happy with our stain and will return.

From the exceptional service to beautiful rooms and incredible food, the Loch Ness Country House Hotel offers a truly 5-star experience, minus the five-star price tag!

We stayed there this weekend just passed, in one of their Junior Suites with a view out to their garden. The room had all the special treats from the Penhaligon’s London miniature bath and beauty products, to White Company robes and bath towels, TVs in both the bedroom and living room areas as well as tea and coffee amenities, a spacious fridge and a powerful hairdryer (which was a pleasant surprise by usual hotel standards!).

The staff at the hotel were absolutely fantastic and it was clear that guest satisfaction was hugely important to them. Especially the General Manager, Aaron and one his co-workers Jonathan. They went above and beyond on numerous occasions during our short stay with them to ensure our stay at the Loch Ness Country House Hotel was a special one.

The dinner we had at the hotel’s restaurant, In the Park, was amazing. We were blown away by every course – so much precision and attention clearly goes into to preparing every meal and they certainly had two very happy diners on Saturday night. I would go as far to say it was one of the best meals we’ve had.

Thank-you once again for your hospitality. We’ll certainly be spreading the word about your fantastic hotel and hope to visit again soon.

Ally & Sarah
