“Great classic railway hotel building shame about everything else”
Reviewed 14 October 2011

A lovely Victorian railway hotel building right beside Inverness Station - good public areas and reasonably well updated rooms of acceptable size and cleanliness. Everything else is just Ok at best and in the case of the Ash Restaurant is downright poor (they couldn't even make a simple pasta dish). Staff were generally indifferent with one great exception at the front desk who tried her best. Overall for the price just OK but not great value for money.

Room Tip: Ask for upstairs - away from the station, lifts & other equipment

We booked this hotel for the weekend using RCI points and had read some of the reviews which seemed to be pretty average so we weren't expecting a great deal. We were very pleasantly suprised as it is a delightful Victorian building with an impressive reception area and gorgeous staircase up to the first floor, (it apparently inspired the staircase built on the Titanic).

The reception staff were very friendly and helpful and we had a twin bedded room on the first floor. The room was spacious and well decorated and spotlessly clean and the bathroom was a good size and again very clean. We found the hotel quite quiet and peaceful and apart from some late night revellers outside at around 1am on the Sunday morning (it is in the city centre after all) we had two good nights' sleep.

Breakfast was a hot and cold buffet with extremely attentive young staff who were very efficient. It was the usual choice of hot cooked breakfast with some fresh cold meats, cheeses and bread rolls and croissants. We found this to be very good.

The hotel is perfect for a city break as it is right next to the railway station and a very short walk to all the city centre shops. Parking at the hotel is very limited but we used the very safe and secure Rose Street car park which is available 24 hours and is just a short walk from the hotel. It costs around £4 for 24 hours.

Overall we were really impressed with the hotel room, staff and the general feel of the place. We will certainly be back next time we want a weekend in Inverness as it is so well situated for the city centre.

Top marks to the very helpful staff, particularly at breakfast.

Room Tip: Not sure what the other rooms are like but the ones on the first floor appear to have been upgraded...

The Royal Highland Hotel is located right outside Inverness railway station, upon arrival I was greeted by a lovely smile and was given all the details I needed to know for my stay very handy and in the town centre. The room was quite, despite its town centre location, and the room was well furnished with a comfortable double bed. The Scottish breakfasts were good, with a large buffet selection with everything from cereals, to cooked breakfast - all help yourself. I had a wonderful stay at the hotel which blends with the history of the Highlands and Inverness.

Stayed here for two nights last week on a DBB basis in this centrally located 3* hotel.
It is in dire need of refurbishment. Our room although very dated, was clean and fairly comfortable, although it was not ready for us when we checked in at 3pm.
I can only endorse comments already voiced about the appalling attitude of some members of staff in this hotel, particularly those in reception and the bar/ dining area. A complete contrast to the waiters and waitresses in the breakfast room, who were most welcoming and helpful.
The service at dinner and quality of food provided, certainly did not warrant the price of £26 per person. There are various much better restaurants available within walking distance. Also the overpriced bar tariff and limited wine selection came as a shock.
If you require a central, basic, budget, hotel, serving a very average breakfast , then I would recommend that you check our various websites as the rates at this hotel vary enormously.

Thank you for the review and we have noted your observations very carefully and, of course, we apologise for any shortcomings in the services which you had availed. We shall also pass on your good comments to our breakfast team which will definitley motivate them to provide even more sincere services to all our guests. In our restaurant, Ash, we offer an extensive alacarte menu which offers ample choices with prices ranging from £4-5 for starters to £10 and above for mains - and we are known for our generous portions. Additionally, all our room guests are offered 20% discount on the alacarte rates and if you opt for our Dinner inclusive rates you can normally order for items worth £25 while paying only £20 for the same and we are slightly confused how you were charged £26 for the same. We hope you will visit us again to take back home the experience which a majority of our guests take back with them and we thank you once again for the comments.

I stayed here for one night , the check in staff were helpful and pleasant enough , the interior decor is slightly tired but the room itself was a reasonabbe size , clean and furnished and decorated to a decent standard .
I had dinner in the Restraunt , the service was slightly erratic but the food was good .

I loved the atmosphere of this hotel, but I guess that's because I'm a bit romantic. There is a grand staircase, and everything has this old-style Scottish decor. However, the rooms are a bit mmm so so, and not very well kept...there were long hairs in the bed and on the bathroom floor, and the bed-spread was absolutely disgusting. I immediately took it away and there were stains of questionable liquids. Yuk. However, the lady at housekeeping told me they were getting rid of them

Apart from that, the rooms are ok. Just focus on the atmosphere and character of it! :-)

Thank you for the kind comments. While we apologise for the shortcoming you observed in the otherwise very high standards of cleanliness that we maintain, let me reassure you that we have throughly investigated the matter and the concerned staff member had been reccommended to go through a refresher programme. We hope you will visit us again and when we can offer you the complete Royal Highland experience for which we are better known.

I've decided I like writing reviews for hotels - I want this job HA.

So i stayed here a while back overnight. I checked in late around 10pm - found a very helpful and freindly night porter who showed me the room before i agreed to stay (even though he seemed fairly busy). The bar is very comfortable as is the reception area.

The room was spacious had a nice hospitality tray and a lovely bathroom, one thing i would say is they could update the electrical stuff.. hairdryer, kettle and tv, all looked very old but useable nontheless. Comfy bed and very clean, apart from one spot on the conising - but with the height of the celing its understandle the high corners cant be cleaned every day.

I awoke late so couldnt enjoy a full breakfast although offered.. but i did grab a croissant on the way out which was delicious and the gave me a coffee to go in a take away cup.

Brilliant and will stay again when next in inverness.

Special mention the night porter: One of the frindliest and most polite me I have ever met absolute gem.. never let him leave!

Room Tip: Cant remember room number but was in the older part of the hotel.
