I stayed here for just one night with my small dog and we really enjoyed ourselves. The single room was clean & comfortable, but best of all it was nice and quiet. The restaurant connected to the hotel, Ash, had great food and a good choice of drinks, and again, welcomed my little dog. The only downside would be that they make all their guests wait until exactly 3pm to be able to check in - I tried at 12.30pm, 2pm, and 2.45pm but was turned away each time. When a guest tried checking in at 2.55pm they were told by reception to wait a few minutes as they were "catching up on paperwork" - a response that I thought was quite odd. They also handed over a key to the luggage room when I arrived at 12.30 without checking to see if I was actually booked in - needless to say, I wasn't completely comfortable leaving all of my belongings there.
But, other than the check-in process, our stay was great. The hotel is done up in a grand way and has lots of character, as well as some great art on the walls. Would stay here again!

Thank you very much for the kind review. We have noted your points on checking-in before the normal time of 3pm and while we apologise for any inconvenience, we normally try to release the rooms but we would have to get absolute clearance for our Head Housekeeper for quality reasons, and on the day there must have been a good number of departure rooms which resulted in stretching the Housekeeping Team to finish the rooms by the scheduled time. It may not be out of context to mention here that there is provision of an Early Check-In and Late Check Out while booking from our website and this helps us in servicing you better. Regarding the storage of luggage, it is our policy to ascertain your stay status before handing over the keys and if there is any deviation, then we shall definitely take corrective action. We would look forward to welcome you again, with your pet, of course.

I have stayed at this hotel before and never had a problem with the size of the room, but this time I was disappointed to be allocated what I consider to be a very small room with sloping walls in the attic of the hotel. Fine if it had been a single or even a 'small double', but as a twin it was very claustrophobic with very little storage space. The en-suite shower (no bath) was very small with hardly enough room to turn round in. More reminiscent of a cramped London hotel than the more spacious room I was expecting. I mentioned my disatisaction to the reception staff but all they could say was to ask for a room on a lower floor next time I stay. Apart from that, the location of the hotel is great right next to the railway station and only a couple of minutes from the bus station (but don't expect great views). Breakfast (self service but with dishes including kippers available to order) is good, and although there was a problem with the kippers I ordered on the second day, the friendly and helpful lady supervisor soon sorted it out. I got the two nights including breakfast through one of the regular auctions on eBay, so the price was reasonable, but I would not have been at all happy if I had paid the hotel website rates for this. Maybe these small rooms are reserved for auction winners - but if so, that should be made clear in the lot description.

Room Tip: Ask not to be put on the third floor

Thank you very much for the review - at the outset let us reassure you that all our guests are treated equally, whatever may be the mode of booking. Having said that, this 156 year old Hotel in Inverness can offer you all the rooms with character, but a small number of rooms deviate from the mostly standard and comfortable sized rooms. We hope you would visit us again to enjoy the hospitality of the Team Royal Highland.

Elegant surroundings. Street noises take away from the lovely rooms and public areas. Also - if you offer wifi - don't make a guest sign up for an account. Found it very annoying esp in a city setting

We got a super cheap rate over the internet and I guess we did get the budget room but we didn't mind. What was great:
Right at the train station - we caught the train up from London, so perfect location.
Our hire care company met us at the station in the morning so all we had to do was walk out the front door of the hotel!
Loved the decor of the hotel - it was our first night in Scotland and it looks a treat(yes some parts are faded but it all adds to its charm)
The staff were really helpful, contacting our car hire company, finding postage stamps etc
Breakfast was more than ample in a rather grand old room
Loved the 'atmosphere' of the place

Next time I would pay a bit more and get a bigger room, but that was my problem for booking a budget room.

Have stayed here on two occasions and never had any grounds for complaint. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with a well-filled tray of water, coffee, tea and biscuits. The staff were pleasant and I will definitely be back!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Royal Highland Hotel is the oldest hotel in the centre of the Highland capital, Inverness. In 2000, the property was carefully restored, retaining its unique character associated with the bygone age. As soon as you enter the hotel you will appreciate this. In the foyer the grand staircase, the inspiration for the Titanic's staircase, leads to the 84 spacious refurbished bedrooms - all with very high ceilings. The decor is rich with traditional furniture and deep colours. The rooms all have soft furnishings and antique style furniture. The excellent bathrooms are generally medium to large in size. For over 151 years, the hotel has been looking after travellers from all over the world. Perhaps its popularity stems from the fact the hotel is a grand place to stay. Large bedrooms, large lounge areas, quiet meeting rooms, good food, prime location and friendly staff all play their part. All local amenities close to hand, but within a 5 minute drive you are out into the dramatic Highlands. Lochness is only 7 miles from the hotel. ... more   less
