Stayed in this hotel for a second time after last staying 9 years ago. The bar/restaurant area (ash) is tasefully decorated. Had a fantasic lunch which could not have been nicer. Staff were friendly and room was decorated well and clean.

The hotel has lots of character and I will definately book in here again when I'm in Inverness

We are glad that you enjoyed a return visit having been here previously several years ago.Im sure you will have noticed we have spent a great deal of time and money on keeping the property "timely" but also moving into 21st century with our free wi fi etc. Our Ash Restauarant is also popular with locals and we are always looking to provide quality food at a good price with our menus. It is good to have guest feedback and we thank you for your time in submitting such and hope we can welcome you back once again in the not too distant future.

Sitting in the large foyer/lounge it is obvious that this hotel was once a really impressive establishment but now it has a dull, shabby look about it. The carpets in the public areas, restaurants, corridors could do with a good clean and cobwebs are not difficult to find. The management don't seem interested in trying to make these areas attractive. A little effort could make a big difference.
Our Classic Twin room was spacious, clean and comfortable but the large, beautifully tiled bathroom was cold. One small towel rail, smothered with towels is inadequate heating for such a large room. An early morning shower in this freezer is not advisable!
Half a dozen parking spaces for such a large hotel is just ridiculous so, if you have a car, go somewhere else!
Breakfast and dinner were OK but too few staff to cope with the large numbers for breakfast.
A big disapointment was the TV. We arrived after 6pm on 3 March for a 2 night stay, had dinner and, tired after our long journey, looked forward to watching the international football on TV only to discover that there is no Sky TV or even teletext in our room or anywhere else in the hotel. When I enquired at Reception I was told that my best solution, if I wanted to watch the football, was "the pub down the road". I ask you!! Well! You now know what to do if you want to watch a football match of Sky TV but, if you just want to check the latest scores, the news headlines or the stock market prices on Ceefax you have a problem if staying at The Royal Highland, Inverness.
For a hotel that gives you a daily, complementary copy of the Financial Times it seems ridiculous not to have a much better TV service.

Thank you for your comments following your recent stay. As you will probably be able to gather from previous responses, we are currently undergoing a series of "updating" particular areas that may require a little TLC and thank you for bringing to our attention your particular observations. We are an Hotel of over 150years and wish to retain character throughout and move forward into 21st Century both tastefully and without too much disruption. We have recently uncovered original mosaic floor tiles in the Lounge area that are being restored rather than covered, we are also renovating and painting both bedrooms and public areas as well as essential maintenance such as windows and testing all electrical towel rails to ensure in full working order. As we are aware many travellers seek traditional surroundings but still wish to keep up to date with TV progress and we are currently looking at boosting our signals to enable us to provide a wider choice of viewing for guests, this is still ongoing and hope to have suitable resolution shortly. Due to our convenient Town Centre location, next to train station and as a former Railway Hotel we understand that many guests do not require car parking however our limited 9 spaces can not be predicted as to occupancy and we therefore suggest guests use the 24 hour pay & display car parks which are as little as £3 for 24 hours and minutes away. We have a mixture of both Business and Leisure guests and provide complimentary newspapres for both, Financial Times and Press & Journal being the 2 main titles on offer currently.Once again we thank you for your observations and hope to welcome you back to Royal Highland Hotel in the near future.

This Victorian hotel was built in 1855 and is very ornate. However, it is now showing its age with every floorboard creaking. The beds are elderly and uncomfortable. They are also small and too short for anyone over 5ft 5in tall. Rooms on our floor were being decorated while we were there but many more need a spruce up.
On the plus side the food is good, the heating very efficient and it is right in the centre of Inverness, beside the station.

Firstly thank you for taking the time to review our Historical property and adding your own photo of our grand staircase. We would certainly agree that we may have an odd creaky floorboard, which is part of our character however we are as you noted in process of "touching up" with regards decor etc and were sorry your particular room may not have yet had that little touch of TLC in your opinion and that this will indeed be remedied. We are planning on taking the Hotel "back in time" with our latest phase and we will be enhancing the features appropriately whilst moving forward with 21st century necessities including upgrading technology for guest convenience.
Our current programme does in fact also include new beds which in the majority of rooms have already been replaced, and we have now a far better range of "King Size" double beds for those of us who like a little more room to move and also the majority of single beds are now similar and comparable to small double bed. We hope you may get an opportunity to return at a later date and that subtle changes may be visible.

I suppose the saying that you get what you pay for is true. However, the hotel looked attractive on the website, the tripadvisor reviews were mixed but the airmiles agent said it would be an OK hotel so we went for it. What a mistake! The Royal Highland is an old, shabby, tired, dirty and uncomfortable hotel. The staff are generally unwelcoming. Having said that, one member of staff was helpful when we requested a change of room. We changed because the top of the wardrobe was thick with dust and there was an empty beer can there! Also in the room was an empty wine bottle! The new room was slightly better because it was cleaner. However, radiators, taps etc were rusting and sealant worn away from the bathtubs. Really unsightly, drab and depressing. Although right next door to a train station there was surprisingly no noise.

We are sorry that this guest felt that there were areas of shortcoming following their recent stay with us. Our housekeeping standards are extremely high and we rarely have any need to carry out full investigation as to allegations of cleanliness. We did however in this case move the room immediately and alert the Head Housekeeper of such and on investigation it seemed unlikely that this was in fact entirely accurate- the "wardrobe" -our wardrobes are encased in built in cupboards and the cornice is over 7 feet off the ground and not visible at eye level so cannot see where the "dirty" top would be.
We did in fact respond direct to the guest following completed "Guest questionnaire" that was completed at the time of their stay and had addressed any issues regarding cleanliness and apologised for any inconvenience caused whilst we did move rooms immediately. We have also taken on board the comments regarding radiators etc, and as part of our daily maintenance schedules have added this to the rooms where guests may have made a comment. As an Hotel of over 150 years we do have a lot of original features whilst maintaining character we also have more contemporary rooms recently refurbished and with newer heating systems. We hope that the guest may choose to return at a future date and that they will experience true Highland Hospitality

We recently stayed at the Highland Hotel (2 rooms) which we extended to two nights due to the weather, which had turned a two hour trip to Inverness into six hours. The staff were accommodating and helpful, and gave us a great rate for the second night. The hotel has a great location on the railway line, and has got limited parking outside. The large shopping centre a few doors away was a huge plus, and a good reason to stay a little longer. Our room was tiny and facing the road, but that wasn't a problem. Although we requested non-smoking, the corridor smelled of smoke, but our room was fine. Our second room was considerably larger and overlooking the station, and was also very good. Breakfast was great, although the staff could have been a little friendlier, but we couldn't fault the food. We ate in the restaurant both night, mainly because the haggis starter (haggis neeps and tatties I think) is so good. The mains were a little disappointing, but overall it was OK, and the French wine we drank both nights was great value. Service very attentive. This is a great hotel with lots of heritage charm - we loved it. It was very reasonably priced, and terrific value for money. Highly recommended as a base in Inverness.

After staying at The Royal Highland for a girly weekend I have to say you wont get a better location than this hotel, shops, bus and train station not to mention nightlife right outside your door. The hotel itself is clean, comfortable and every possible breakfast option is served. Must point out the showers are fantastic never wanted to come out and the water never ran cold. Would definately stay here again.

I booked the special offer shopping deal for my Mum and I for a Christmas treat.
The check in was good, our room was lovely with a good sized en-suite.The best point was that it was warm, lovely and warm.We went on the worst day for snow , our journey took two hours longer than normal so we were were frozen but soon warmed up.
Part of the deal was £25.00 each towards dinner in the Ash restaurant and I must say that I would have been highly annoyed if we had payed full price for the meal as it was sub standard .I wont go into detail ,just to say that wine glasses were not filled to the correct measure, the vegetables were inedible and the whole main course was not a reflection of the price being charged. The pudding was fine.
The breakfast was not as bad as previous reviewers have claimed. It was varied, hot and filling and the staff were attentive although didn't quite understand some our requests.
The check out was ok apart from the receptionist contstantly yawning and showing us her fillings.
We did appreciate her putting our bags away so we could collect them later.
All in all this was a good value stay,we enjoyed it and we will stay again.

The Royal Highland Hotel is the oldest hotel in the centre of the Highland capital, Inverness. In 2000, the property was carefully restored, retaining its unique character associated with the bygone age. As soon as you enter the hotel you will appreciate this. In the foyer the grand staircase, the inspiration for the Titanic's staircase, leads to the 84 spacious refurbished bedrooms - all with very high ceilings. The decor is rich with traditional furniture and deep colours. The rooms all have soft furnishings and antique style furniture. The excellent bathrooms are generally medium to large in size. For over 151 years, the hotel has been looking after travellers from all over the world. Perhaps its popularity stems from the fact the hotel is a grand place to stay. Large bedrooms, large lounge areas, quiet meeting rooms, good food, prime location and friendly staff all play their part. All local amenities close to hand, but within a 5 minute drive you are out into the dramatic Highlands. Lochness is only 7 miles from the hotel. ... more   less
