This historic hotel is situated on the North bank of the River Ness, close to the Centre of the City. There is no car park and the municipal "Pay and Display" one nearby is restricted to a maximum of 24 hours.
The restaurant is relatively new, on the ground floor behind Reception and is a soulless large room without any windows. Evening meals here are very poor, but the buffet breakfast is good enough. What a shame the first floor rooms with wonderful views over the river are not used for a restaurant! The ground floor front of the hotel beside Reception is now an uninspiring bar.
Somehow the elegant simplicity of the original design of this building has been lost with the redevelopment of the ground floor, creating a somewhat bewildering array of corridors and staircases until one reaches the upper floors.
The bedrooms vary in size and views, but are comfortable enough if a little "tired" in places with minor damages not repaired or replaced.
Convenient for "bed and breakfast" if travelling by train, but not perhaps a destination in itself.
