This is a castle built in 1625, rebuilt about 40 years ago. It is one of the coolest places we've ever stayed - hidden doorways, drawing room, circular stairways winding your way up the turrets to your room - duck your head, some of the doorways are small, and pack light, there are no elevators. The staff was terrific and great fun. The evening meal was one of the best we ate during three weeks in the UK. Don't miss eating there.
Having said all that, if you need first class, five star accommodations, this may disappoint you at first. The place looks a little run down at first - cracks in the ceiling, weeds in the gardens, and a group of four ponies wander around the yard and may greet you at the front door. But after a bit you stop noticing these things and you just think, "Wow, how cool is this place?"
We stayed in five star places in the UK, but this was our most memorable stay. Wouldn't trade it for anything and will talk about it for a long time - but go with appropriate expectations.
I personally loved this place!More
