Great for morning coffee, brunch, elevenses etc.

Carrot cake always good. Bacon butties good, tea good, service with a smile and also great place to find that elusive rare book

“Heaven for a bibliophile”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

I had already eaten lunch and was calling in for a cup of tea and a cake. It was about 2:15 on a Saturday and quite quiet so there was no delay being seated and served. I had a piece of lemon and poppyseed cake which was delicious. Other people around me were still having lunch and the vegetable broth looked nice. Afterwards I spent quite a while browsing the shelves of second hand books which are stacked floor to ceiling, and could easily have lost myself there for the whole afternoon. I would certainly go back.

“A delight of a place”
Reviewed 12 June 2014 via mobile

I can easily lose a few hours in here.the bookshop is exquisite, alway find a little gem of a book, though pricey at times.
The cafe upstairs is really good too.the homemade soup is always delicious and served with a home crusty bread. The BLT is also fantastic.always finish with a coffee and some home baking, both delicious. Great value for money! Quite a quiet wee place too, which is nice.

“Brilliant bookshop, chaotic café”
Reviewed 10 May 2014

Leakey's is the secondhand book equivalent of London's Foyles: the books are set out for browsing and one could spend a lifetime working through the massive stock. Unfortunately, when we visited, it seemed as if one could also spend a lifetime in the café.
We went for a light lunch on a moderately busy Saturday and were not surprised to be asked if we could wait 15-20 minutes, as the café was busy. We were happy and returned 15 minutes later to be allocated a table. Then the wait began. The menu is short, consisting mostly of cold food, but we waited 10 minutes before anyone came to take our order. In the background, there was much activity, but no obvious sense of direction. The server returned to our table to advise that the kitchen was busy and that there would be a delay of 15-20 minutes, offering us the option of cancelling the order (which was for a slice of cake, a sandwich, a tea and a lemonade, hardly complicated to prepare).
We opted to stay (as we had already eaten into the time we had available) and to wait for the drinks until the food was ready. The tea was delivered at the 20-minute point, but the sandwich did not arrive until almost 40 minutes from our arrival.
The food was very good and we had no complaints about either the cake or the sandwich, simply that the café seemed to lack any sense of co-ordination. The server was very apologetic, but should not have been forced to make amends for the lack of organisation. When competing with the might of Starbucks and Costa, the smaller, independent establishments have to get it right if they are to succeed and, on this showing, Leakey's Café failed to do so. The bill was very reasonable, but the overall impression was disappointing.
We probably won't go back, as there are other, similar establishments in Inverness (albeit none offers the same range of browsing material).

I love this cafe. Having souperb lunch in a bookshop is something special, especially when the fire is roaring. Friendly and helpful staff. Great place!
