“Top Notch Guest House”
Reviewed 5 August 2013

My wife and I recently stayed at Inverglen Guest House during our Scottish holiday. We chose it based on the tripadvisor reviews and we were not disappointed. John and Susan are great hosts and the place is immaculate.

It is well situated in a quiet street but still only an easy walk into the heart of Inverness.

John goes out of his way to help make your stay at Inverglen and your visit to the highlands an enjoyable one and Susan is a great cook so the breakfasts are very special.

Highly recommended.

My husband and I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Inverglen Guest House during a trip through Scotland. The rooms are clean and well cared for, and the property is well situated (can walk into town for a great meal), but the real plus is the hosts, John and Susan. John was gracious enough to wait up for our late arrival, as well as provide us valuable information about things to do in the area. In particular, his recommendation to hike in Glen Affric was fantastic and not something that we would have found on our own. Susan prepared delicious breakfasts and together they seem to really enjoy what they are doing. We really appreciated the list of local restaurants that they emailed to us well in advance of our stay, with a recommendation that we make reservations, as this is the high season. We would definitely stay here again and would recommend Inverglen to friends travelling to Inverness.

Hi Leslie

Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review for us, and that you enjoyed your trip to Glen Affric after John's recommendation to make the journey - it really is the most beautiful spot, and the views change with every season, which makes it really special.

Glad that you enjoyed the biscuits and the breakfasts too, although John admits that his contribution to all the cooking is simply to source the ingredients and to sample (for quality control purposes only, of course!)

Hope you were able to take home some fantastic memories of your trip to the Highlands.

Kind regards, Susan & John

The way in which John and Susan work together, producing wonderful food, excellent service and lovely accommodation, is a sure recipe for success. Anyone who stays here is the beneficiary of this streamlined partnership. When we arrived we were greeted with tea (or coffee to my preferred taste - excellent work, John) and scones (thank you Susan). A brief and informative discussion of what we could do in Inverness and we were out, leaving our cases in good hands. The room was lovely - neutral colours with tasteful artwork and furniture; the bed was extremely comfortable; the wardrobe roomy and with hangers that can be removed. The bathroom was well appointed and the towels large and thick. There is plenty of space for toiletries and those that were provided were good quality and included a shower cap as well as other items usually found only in hotels. Breakfast was excellent, with the usual cereals and fruit, a range of hot items and a special. There is a vegetarian option with great vegetarian sausages. Breakfast is ordered by 8.00 the night before as it is freshly cooked on the day. John and Susan manage to conduct a conversation with guests, working together to ensure that no-one is neglected in terms of food or other attention. A room at the front is lovely as the birds congregate outside, enticed by the leftovers (plus other food as any bird relying on leftovers from the excellent breakfast would be very thin indeed). Inverglen is up an incline that could be difficult for some people. However, the small taxi fare from the station is well worth it. There is also an easier walk through the shopping centre that we found on our last day.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front and enjoy the birds in the early morning.

Thanks so much for writing such a great review for us, and your fellow travellers! We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us, and hope that your trip to Scotland overall was really enjoyable.

Susan says she can't take any credit for the veggie sausages - they are the Linda McCartney range in case you can get them back in Australia - she just cooks them for slightly longer than they say on the packet, so that the outsides are crispier!

Kind regards, Susan & John

We had a lovely time at Susan & John's B&B. They were welcoming and made my partner and I feel at home in their guest house. The rooms were well decorated and there are plans to refurbish - I can't wait to see what it will be like after that!

The food was absolutely delicious! There was a great selection for breakfast and Susan did a stunning job of cooking everything. She was able to cater for my food intolerances which was really kind of her. Most places ask you to bring certain products as they don't stock it but it didn't seem like a problem at all for Susan. In fact, she made sure that I was always included in the sweet afternoon treats which was lovely.

Although they were very friendly and chatty, they were also very professional in their approach to the B&B sending confirmations close to the date and including restaurant recommendations. They also advised us to book in advance as we would be there during the Scottish Open which was good advice as most restaurants were very busy during out stay.

I also felt they worked really well as a team and supported each other throughout. I think this contributed to the warm feel of the place when you enter and you instantly feel part of the family.

I would definitely recommend Inverglen Guest House to everyone for it's lovely hosts and lovely house. Oh and an added bonus is that it's very close to the town centre. In 5 minutes you can be in town and exploring what it has to offer.

Thank you Susan & John - can't wait to visit again and taste some more of that shortbread!!

Hi Julie & John

Thank you for writing such a lovely review for us - it was great to meet you both during your trip to the Highlands, and we're so happy you enjoyed your stay with us so much. You certainly packed a lot into your time away, so I hope you left a few more sights to visit for a return trip! As you know, there are plenty of excellent restaurants to try too!!

We hope you bring back the glorious weather if you come back again!

Kind regards, Susan & John

Susan and John are wonderful hosts. From the moment you arrive, with tea and home-made cake, you are made to feel as if you are with longstanding friends delighted you could visit. When Susan realised we had not booked anywhere for dinner, she instantly phoned around for us, as the Scottish Open was on and we would have wandered from restaurant to restaurant in increasingly dispirited fashion, unable to find a table. Susan also told us about a craft fair in the Bishop's Palace, which we would not have found out about other than from a local. Not only were we able to find some lovely gifts there, but we had the pleasure of seeing the inside of this magnificent building which is generally not open to the public. Everything is very comfortable, - we were in Inverness during a rare heatwave, but with two large windows in our room we had wonderful air flow, as well as lovely natural light. Susan's cooking is designed to tempt appetites and it does! It is only a short walk into the city from the house, and we found it very easy to find when driving in from the eastern highlands - John's written directions are very good. Everything at Inverglen has a lovely personal touch that lifts any guest's spirits. We were delighted we stayed here.

Hi Judith

It was so lovely to meet you both during your stay, and we're delighted that you enjoyed your time with us, and visiting Inverness! Thanks so much for taking time to write a review for us - we really do appreciate all the feedback that we get from our guests.

We hope your mum enjoyed her cruise around the Dalamation coast, and that she has arrived home safely now? At least our Scottish heatwave helped to prepare her for the temperatures in the Med!

Best wishes, Susan & John

Susan and John went above and beyond to make sure my stay at their B&B was both comfortable and memorable. From the beginning with a welcoming email pointing out great restaurants to visit and things to do, and the home made shortbread biscuits and other little treats each evening.
My goodness Susan can cook. Breakfast was always a delight with everyday having a different home made special to choose from.
John organised a booking for me as I wasn't successful with securing a booking for a trip and Susan assisted me to secure an appointment for an old neck injury.
I will definitely be back and I am recommended to family and friends. Thank you Susan and John, the breakfast pack was appreciated on my early departure.

Hi Tania

Thanks for taking the time to write such a lovely review for us - it was such a pleasure to meet you and to help you get the most out of your stay here. We had an American lady stay the following week, who also worked with children with learning disabilities, so it was such a shame you missed each other! Hope your visit to Perth and the activity bus was worthwhile?

We hope your neck continues to improve, and that the long flight home hasn't set you back to square one. Look forward to seeing you again in the future if you do come back with your sisters!

Kind regards, Susan & John

This is a great place to stay. Everything was perfect, we really loved it! John & Susan were so friendly, the perfect hoasts. Lovely rooms, perfectly clean & comfortable. So close to the city, left the car there & walked. Breakfast was delicious & more than ample for the biggest apertite. Lovely little extras like Susan's home made Shortbread Buscuits, delicious & just added that lovely extra touch. We would never think of staying anywhere else in Inverness!

Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review for us - we are so pleased that you all enjoyed your stay with us, and would love to see you again if you are back in the area!

The short walk into town certainly helps to burn off some of those extra calories from the breakfasts and shortbread, but if you can't indulge when you're on holiday, what's the point? We love living here, as it's so quiet, yet so easy to just pop into town without having to use the car.

Hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday in Scotland, best wishes, Susan & John
