Fantastic central location in sight of the train station with great staff, very courteous, offering secure storage and while making us feel very welcome, allowed us to enjoy the day before checking in. We returned later, and while disappointed there was no additional rooms (when nowhere near fully booked), we shared the triple family room which was comfortable and spotlessly keen. The quality of furniture and décor could be upgraded, but for the price, this was perfect, you could not expect more. Breakfast fantastic, great service, but do check the breakfast times. Bar service even better, with very cheap drinks (do ask for a receipt). Porters again are superb with one chasing us to the train station having left something behind. This is a great hotel, and for what we paid, for the location and for the use of the sister hotels spa and pool, this is just perfect. It is not five stars, but there are some dedicated individuals who strive to make it so by their approach and who put the Hotels future and wellbeing of the guests foremost. Others could learn!

Room Tip: Upgrade to club (if they will let you)

What a fantastic, friendly hotel! A bottle of bubbly in our room in ice to greet us!

The food was excellent, which was locally sourced, and delicious, served by friendly, professional staff who took a pride in their jobs.

The bedrooms were well laid out, and very clean, and because of the tartan, were very different to the usual chain hotels. The hotel was full of character, with "wonky" floors due to the age of the hotel.

We were there on Burns night, which was a very interesting experience, and even though they had 93 extra kilted Scotsmen in the hotel, the food and service were still up to standard. all the staff had time to chat to the guests and make them welcome.

The situation of the hotel was superb, centrally located with plenty of parking.

We will definitely be back, especially if there are special breaks here.

I enjoyed our stay here, the staff were very very helpful (apart from one older women who was very unhelpful) the food was great and the bed and shower were great, the room smelt of damp and was incredibly hot but this may have been caused by our wet mountain equipment. Overall, staying here will be enjoyable for you I am sure.

We had an “unscheduled” two nights stay at the Alex after our ferry was cancelled whilst on our way back home for Hogmanay. Having our dog along with us we were tied in finding a pet friendly hotel that had availability for the two nights before the next ferry. The staff were so helpful and genuinely sympathetic about our predicament, even provisionally reserving a room for the night of the 31st in case the ferry was cancelled again. The hotel rooms are a bit dated and in need of a facelift, but it was warm and clean. The public areas are comfortable and relaxing and available to guests with pets. We didn’t have any meals (other than breakfast, which was fine) so can’t comment on the food. The bar is well stocked and the barman’s knowledge of single malts was second to none. The team at this hotel are a credit, many places could do well to learn from the customer service given by the staff at the Alex.

Have just read a couple of recent reviews on this hotel and have to say Im shocked that some people found it to be a good experience.
I arrived at this hotel with 3 other local people on the evening of 2nd Jan to eat at the restruant.
To be fair we did not phone ahead to book ,on arrival we walked in through front door, receptionist did not lift her head..we walked into bar where barmaid had her head in her hands on bar top...2 other guests in lounge.
Walking into restruant we were greeted by mine host/head waiter wearing very creased clothing and not a tooth in front of his mouth and to be told restruant was closed and only open to hotel guests!! The place was empty ...I thought they must be making so much money they do not need the local custom..asked to see the manager and were told yes we could eat the table de hote menu..Bad move..starter and sweet were edible as the could not do wrong with salad and packet smoked trout nor Ice cream for sweet..we all ordered green thai curry..I cannot describe what it tasted like..boiled out of recognition.
Ordered 2 bottles of wine which were plonked on table and left for ourselves to open and we were not asked later if we wanted another drink etc. all in all a horrible experience and would never recommend.
Big shame on a Highland hotel which used to have good food /service etc...never again.

Room Tip: My advice would be not to eat there!
