“Miserable Englishman”
Reviewed 29 June 2012

Having walked Ben Nevis on a miserable day we were much anticipating a hearty pub meal at the Ben Nevis Inn only to told to "get out" for using the bathroom to change out of our soaking wet clothes into the warm ones we brought. I wonder what kind of people do they think are going to be eating at an Inn at the beginning of the track? The manager was unfriendly, rude and treated us like second class citizens for trying to change in the bathroom.
We were instead forced to change clothes in the parking lot in the rain and we took our business elsewhere. It's a pity you can't give zero on this website.

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback on our tripadvisor page. I regret that your experience has left this impression of our establishment.
Given our location, at the foot of the Ben Nevis path, it is inevitable that hill-walkers will come in to use our bathroom facilities and (as indicated in your complaint) as a changing facility. We are faced, on a daily basis throughout summer, with an onslaught of hill-walkers who enter our privately owned restaurant and pub and make use of our toilets. The business which attracts not only hill walkers but locals and tourists alike was not established in order to aid the vast amount of walkers with their toiletry needs.

On the day in question I had received numerous complaints from paying customers (who had booked to eat with us) that they had to que behind people using the toilets as changing rooms. Due to our popularity and the amount of people eating and dining with us, we were already stretched to facilitate the toiletry needs of our customers so we simply could not stretch to accommodate the needs of people who walk in and expect our facilities to be available to them.
When we are asked by non-customers if they can use the facilities we say yes as we do not want to deter them from possibly eating or drinking with us afterwards. We are faced with a problem when people enter our restaurant, unannounced and proceed to show themselves to the toilet area in order to change.
We are not a public toilet and we receive no money from our local authority toward the substantial upkeep of our toilet area – all costs are being met by the business. I tried to explain to you, in a polite manner, this situation and you quite rudely stated that I was being ridiculous.

I was brought up with the values that it was important to engage with someone before you take something for granted.

In respect to your comment that you had intended to eat and drink with us after you had changed, had you made yourself aware to a member of staff that you intended to do so we would have tried our best to accommodate your needs and I would therefore be able to respond to those other paying customers who were complaining about the ques that you, too, were a paying customer. Given that you had not acknowledged anyone before making your way to our toilets we could not foresee whether you may or may not be paying customers.
I apologise once again that there has been some misinterpretation as to what our business offers but I hope you can now appreciate our viewpoint.

3 of my friends and I were on a backpack trip through the British Isles and the Ben Nevis bunkhouse was one of our favorite stops. The people there were so helpful and friendly and the pub upstairs was super convenient and tasty. We loved the local feel and the convenience of the inn the night before our hike up Ben Nevis.

Stayed at the Bunkhouse after completing the West Highland Way. It's a bit out from Fort William city centre so we had to take a taxi to and from the bunkhouse. Most of the people staying there were doing Glen Nevis, so the location was more convenient for them. Instead of rooms all of the bunks are just located in rows, so it was extremely noisy and if one person turned on a light everyone could see it. We were also next to the kitchen and got lots of noise from there. The toilets and showers are all shared and there is less privacy than in most other bunkhouses. The restaurant at the Inn is great though.

I would recommend anyone who is either climbing Ben Nevis or having an outdoors weekend in the Fort William area to give the place a shot. The bunkhouse accommodation is very basic, but as long as you know this before you go and are prepared you should have a great stay!

The accommodation itself is beneath the bar, and consists of three 8-bed (4 bunks) sections with a kitchen at one end and the toilets, showers and a small drying room at the other end. This was my first time staying at a bunkhouse and all 24 beds were full for the night, so it could be slightly cramped when trying to get changed etc but thats all part of the fun. This is simply a place to get your head down for the night and grab a shower and some food.

The beds were comfy enough with bedding provided, and there are two basic showers, two shower cubicles and a few sinks. We were lucky with the weather but I could see how there would be a shortage of space for drying wet clothes/boots as the drying room was a small cupboard about the size of a toilet cubicle, so this would be a big negative if the weather was wet.

The kitchen area has enough seating at kitchen tables for about 12 people, and there is kettle, fridge, oven, hobs etc for preparing food.

The major plus for this place however is the bar above, which was open until 11. The food here was pricey but fantastic, and there are a range of drinks available, including local Ben Nevis whisky and real ales. There was a really good atmosphere in the place with people either coming in having completed Ben Nevis, or staying for the night before climbing in the morning. Again, we were lucky with the weather so sat outside on the picnic tables with our beers and there are fantastic fews up the valley to Ben Nevis. There was no live music on the night we stayed, but I could imagine that being absolutely brilliant!

Also, a mention to the staff at the Ben Nevis Inn, really friendly and helpful

Room Tip: Probably best to choose Dorm 1 which is furthest from the toilet/shower area and therefore less chan...

Stayed 4 nights recently at the bunkhouse after completing Ben Nevis in the dark for charity.
The bunkhouse was awesome, just right for people who enjoy the outdoors, great beds, comfy, each dorm with it's own radiator, clean linen, showers with good hot water, clean toilets. Kitchen had all you needed, cooker, microwave, 2 sinks, fridge, utensils etc. Could possibly benefit from a chest freezer for peoples food and maybe another cooker as in summer i can imagine it is very busy. Apart from those suggestions, we enjoyed the scenery and the accomodation.
The pub when it opened was a real homely feeling place, agar fire, seperate upstairs which was cosy, beer was good. The food was amazing and lots of it, well worth the money, and last but not least, the live scottish traditional folk band that played on Thursday night was amazing and I stayed there all night to listen to them. I miss them already, specially Jen on the violin, what can I say?
Recommend it and we shall both return.
