I stayed at the Hotel just before Christmas 2004 for three days and found the hotel full of character albeit dark and old fashion, with very dated fixtures but that makes it fit in with the date of the building structure.
I do like modern hotels under different circumstances with all the mod cons but one can, if desired live a little in the past of old Scotland at Ossian's.
The owners and staff are extremely helpful and polite and the food is, well good to say the least and after a visit to the kitchen to see the preparation, enjoyed it even more.
Summing up; cheap and cheerful without any mod cons, clean immaculate kitchen area.

The room was so dated. The sheets on the bed were musty and damp. The bed itself was so old the bed springs were uncomfortable to sleep on. The shower was from the dark ages, a plastic cubicle like a caravan shower. The televison only got a fuzzy reception that was after moving it centimeters at time to try and get a picture! You couldnt pay me to stay in this hotel again!

My partner and I decided to spend the weekend away for our anniversary. After a lovely stay at the Bosville Hotel in Portree, Skye, we headed for Fort William. We hadn't booked a room so when we turned up at the Ossian Hotel and found out that they had a room available, we thought we were very lucky and took it. It was a family room and they couldn't sell it for less than £112 they said. We should have asked to see the room before we paid for it, but we were getting tired and desperate and the lady at reception (or was it a bar?) made it quite clear that we would be struggling to find a room available anywhere in the area. I work in a hotel myself, I know what it’s like to be fully booked and turn people away. Call me crazy but when asked to pay £112 for a room I expect it to be at least clean and comfortable.

We didn't go to the room straight away, which was another big mistake, because I would have checked out and asked for a refund. Unfortunately my partner and I went out for a meal and had a few drinks, which means that we couldn’t drive away, we were stuck!

When we entered the room, I was first horrified by the decor... it was extremely ugly, the curtains and bedding were both very busy and colourful but didn't match. But to be honest that was the least of my worries. I went to the bathroom, the shower was one of those old plastic ones, as it turned out we didn't use it because 1 it was too small for my partner to stand up in and 2 there was mould on the shower curtain, which completely put me off. I then found hair on the bathroom floor that belonged to God knows who! My partner decided to make himself a cup of tea but changed his mind when he saw how dirty the inside of the kettle was. The bed had also seen better days. Oh and I forgot to mention that the light wasn't working in the bathroom and there was a hole (which looked like a bullet hole) in the bathroom window. We did not have breakfast as we refused to eat there. My partner did mention when we checked in that their homemade soup of the day from the day before strangely smelt like the tinned Heinz Soup, as for me, I just couldn’t see how their kitchen could be clean after seeing one of their rooms. So basically we paid £112 to sleep in a very uncomfortable bed, as we didn’t use the bathroom, which was unpractical and dirty and did not have breakfast.

Other minus points:
- No night porter (if you go out, better make sure you come back before they lock the door)
- Breakfast is served between 7.45 and 9AM, better not sleep in! Mind you chances are that you’ll be up early (that’s if you’ve slept at all) as they haven’t heard of double glazing.
- Check out time is 10.00.
I’ve worked in quite a few hotels, they all had night porters, breakfast was always on for longer than an hour and 15 minutes, and check out time was always either 11AM or 12PM (not that you’d want to stay in the Ossian that long, I agree)

I have nothing nice to say about the Ossian Hotel, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

My husband and I often travel to Fort William for a weekend break, as we have found the locals and visitors to be really friendly and lots of fun.
This visit, we decided to stay as central in town as possible. The Grand, which is really clean, friendly and comfortable was fully booked, so we decided to stay in Ossians Hotel, located right in the centre.
BIG MISTAKE!
Parked the car at the rear entrance (parking for approx 6 cars), looked up, seen the rear windows. Felt faint. Dirty, tatty, and very unwelcoming to say the least.
Lift takes you to the main reception, located behind the bar, which also doubles as the dining room. (please note, the lift doesnt operate later in the evenings, and it does not operate a night porter service after 1.20 am, so if you have been invited to a party...forget sleeping in the hotel)
After checking in, went to the room, which was even worse than I could have imagined. When we unlocked the door the SMELL hit us like a tidal wave. Very basic, functional, and extrememly smelly! Now I know why they dont show pics of their rooms on their website. Topped off by every where in town being fully booked, but at 10.30pm, they let out 3 rooms.
Plus points for the hotel.
It is very central, being close to the nightlife. and is OK if there are no other options.. The elecric kettle worked, and the shower was fine. Clean sheets and pillow cases, and clean towels. (extra pillows are in a pastic zipper bag under the bed!)

Minus points for the hotel:
Possibly a Victorian hotel, that was probably renovated in the 70's, which really shows in the decor, carpets, and overall appearance.
Really shabby and well worn......did not even have the gracefullness of an "elderly Lady" who just needs some TLC. All the finer points of the hotel have obviously been removed so we were left feeling we were in an old, dingy, dirty, run down hotel hotel.

I cannot comment on the standard of food in the hotel, as I refused to eat there... went to local Safeways store for breakfast...

Overall views......
There are plenty of lovely B+Bs in the area which charge far less and offer a higher standard of accomodation.
