“Very comfortable.”
Reviewed 19 July 2011

We found this hotel to be very clean and comfortable. Fabulous views from the front over Loch Linnhe. Pleasant, friendly, helpful staff. The breakfast is completely waitress service, but the service was quick. Portions seemed a little 'controlled', but you can ask for more if desired. Plenty of car parking.

Stayed here for 2 nights in July 2011. The Hotel is set right on the Loch, with fantastic views. We stayed in a loch facing room on the ground floor. The room was large with the facilities you would expect. The room had windows which opened wide and there was also a window in the bathroom. The bed was very comfortable, there was no duvet, but rather a sheet with two blankets.

We ate in the hotel restaurant on the first night and found it to be very good value as well as good quality, the service was also excellent. The black pudding mash was lovely! The breakfast was also excellent with the the wait staff very helpful - there was a very big selection and you could pretty much ask for anything. The service was quick and attentive and made a welcome change from the usual hotel breakfast buffet scrum.

We ordered coffee in the lounge in a afternoon which come with lovely home made shortbread. The lounge and restaurant again have fantastic views over the loch to the mountains opposite. A further nice feature is there are lots of artwork all around the hotel showcasing the wonderful local scenery.

My only complaint was our room was on the ground floor and you could clearly hear people walking about in the room upstairs, however this was a very minor issue which did not spoil a very enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a loch room - it is worth it!

A large place by Scottish standards, without much character. Amiable proprietor, but I didn't find the personal touch that I like in Scotland. Fort William is a touristy town, and if you're looking for local color, maybe you should skip the Clan Macduff Hotel and Fort William and proceed a little farther north. On the other hand if you like to be surrounded by other tourists, and you like gift shops full of trinkets, this is for you!

My room had slightly chipped varnished furniture, a tiny CRT-tube TV mounted on a wall bracket, and embossed cream-colored wallpaper. Kind of a fifties look, although the hotel appears to have been built more recently than that. The food seemed overpriced, so I ate in the town (excellent seafood).

Room Tip: Most rooms do not face the loch. Ask about this.

We have stayed at the Clan Macduff many times over the years and would not stay anywhere else in Fort William. We are in the age group of 35-45 and feel really comfortable in what some have already described as been a bit old fashioned.

Yes it's old fashioned, but is that such a bad thing? It's clean and very comfortable and harks back to an era when customer service and values meant something. We love the front facing balcony rooms and have always been lucky in getting these. They have a great view of the loch even if you also have the view of the car park - but honestly it's not that bad (as some might have already alluded to).

The breakfast is top notch and the beds are very comfy and the shower is fab. What more can you ask for, definitely a gem and we can't wait for our next visit.

We stayed at the Clan Macduff for 2 nights whilst weathering through a storm during our annual sailing trip. Whilst the weather made it miserable to go outside, the Clan Macduff made our stay inside its four walls worthwile. The rooms were very spacious and clean, but most of all the food was outstanding giving us a true taste of Scottish cooking at its best. The staff were extremely helpful and very welcoming and the bar area was a great place to relax and get a stunning glimpse of the highlands when the rain subsided for a while. The hotel makes an excellent base for those like us who are on their way to a sailing trip or maybe even going walking up in the highlands. Excellent value for money so we will definitely be booking in again next year when we attempt to sail again.

It’ll be fair to say that the hotel has a very dated feel to it. Perhaps not surprising as it has, apparently, been in family hands for nearly 40 years. Some of the furnishings certainly date to that – for example, heavy dark wood in our bedroom which did nothing to lighten the room already dark by its proximity to the cliff face which is almost literally within touching distance of the window. Suggest if you’re here for a little while, it’ll be worth trying to get a lake facing room (which, presumably, costs more).

The room is clean and comfy though, with all that you need for an overnight stay.

Breakfast continues the air of quaintness. It’s served by a real person, not the usual scramble for a buffet. And there’s all the usual expectations for the “full fry up”. Quantity certainly, if not top quality. Sausage was of the unpleasant pappy “catering” variety. Baked beans were in a thin sauce. But, this aside, it was OK, although probably not as good as your favourite “greasy spoon” local caff.

All in all, it's OK for overnight - but I wouldnt want to stop longer.
