Recommended length of visit: More than 3 hours
Owner description: Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

Excellent train trip. Steam hauled train runs from Fort William to Mallaig travelling through some magnificent secenery. The big attraction is crossing the Glenfinnan viaduct. Going north, you need to be on tbe left hand side of the train and. Onthe return, be o tbe right. Harry Potter fans just in their element. At Mallaig, not too much to do but you usually only have up to 2 hours to occupy yourself.

The Jacobite Steam Train was a good experience. From Fort William to Mallaig, the train took us through the Glennfinan viaduct which was seen in the Harry Potter films. Very exciting. There was allocated seating so book in advance.
The scenery was fantastic. For me the only thing that let it down was it didn't feel magical. A suggestion for the train suggestion box if they had one would be to play the Harry Potter theme tune going over the Viaduct and have more Harry Potter stuff for the children on the train.

We took a trip on the Jacobite Steam Train in September. We were really lucky with the weather for this time of year, as it stayed dry and bright meaning we had great views and photo ops.
We booked first class seats, and it was well worth the extra money. The first class carriage has lovely comfy seats and more room for everyone. You also receive complimentary tea and coffee.
The journey is approx. two hours each way from Fort William to Mallaig. With a two hour stop in Malliag at lunchtime.
Mallaig is such a pretty little costal village. Its population must triple when the train pulls in each day :-) Plenty of little cafes/pubs where you can grab a bite to eat or a drink.
There are hour long boat trips from the harbour, to spot seals and dolphins, and you are back in plenty of time for the return journey. I think the tickets cost approx. £10.
If you order champagne to drink on the train, beware that if you have the windows open, you will be covered with a fine dusting of soot every time you pass through a tunnel - make sure to cover your glass with your hand :-)
All in all a great day out, with beautiful views. Loved it.

Cool train, lovely scenery. Pick it up at Fort William and go from there. Bit of an anti climax at the destination but the trip itself is well worth it. Drinks and snacks available on the way there and back. Oh - take a set of ear plugs for when they use the tannoy - they have no concept of a sensible volume!
