Owner description: A romantic fairy-tale castle that has been the home of the Thanes of Cawdor since 1370, Cawdor has evolved into a charming family mansion and the most outstanding of stately homes. The dramatic medieval tower, dungeon, turrets, battlements and drawbridge, belie an enchanting interior of fine art, tapestries and furniture which create the warm and welcoming feel of a home rather than a museum. The castle, set in stunning grounds with three beautiful and varied gardens, is surrounded by the magnificent Cawdor Big Wood, one of the finest woodland areas in Europe, threaded with colour coded nature trails to explore.Visitors are invited to enjoy a delicious lunch or tea with home-baking from our mouth-watering menu in the courtyard café, then browse the exciting range of gifts and goodies in our three shops and, time permitting, have fun on the putting green and short 9-hole golf course which provides enjoyment for all standards.

“Magical Evening”
Reviewed 26 August 2013

Cawdor Castle is always a great place to visit and I can't recommend it highly enough. However for a really outstanding evening go to one of their open air theatres. I've been twice, last year I watched Macbeth with Cawdor Castle as a backdrop. It doesn't get any better than that.
This year we went to watch "As you like it" It was wonderful. On both occasions the plays were performed by The Lord Chamberlain's Men. They are brilliant!! It's acted as it was in Shakespeare's time. All men actors. During Macbeth I'm sure Lady Macbeth had a beard, probably more realistic than we know. During As you like it there were men playing women who playing men. You have to see it to know it works. Go onto the internet and check out the next open air theatre at Cawdor Castle. I'll definately be there. Bring a picnic everyone else will have one.

“Macbeth... Really?”
Reviewed 26 August 2013

We visited Cawdor as part of a coach tour. The one draw back with these types of tours is that your time is somewhat limited. we would liked to have spent much more time on the Cawdor grounds. While the Castle itself was interesting and quite accessible the grounds were the highlight of the place. The walled garden is a two hour walk to do it justice. However behind the castle across the bridge and through the woods along the river was an Eden in itself. The flower garden was immaculate and the wild flower garden was equally impressive.

“Beautiful gardens and interesting details”
Reviewed 24 August 2013

This was an interesting castle to visit with it still being lived in. some beautiful rooms, and wonderful gardens. Really hated that the owner had left her dogs in her Range Rover parked outside.
Tea shop offered rather ordinary fare at less than ordinary prices.

“Poor value for money, little for children”
Reviewed 19 August 2013

If you like gardens, its very nice. If you wanted to see a castle, very poor. There were 3-4 rooms that you could walk through. Everything was cordoned off, so the kids were not engaged at all. Even the maze was cordoned off. So if anyone wants to look at a maze, this is the place to go. For the ticket price, we got a very short unimpressive trip. I am stunned by some of the reviews, perhaps older visitors that like gardens. Certainly little for children to see and do.
