Owner description: A romantic fairy-tale castle that has been the home of the Thanes of Cawdor since 1370, Cawdor has evolved into a charming family mansion and the most outstanding of stately homes. The dramatic medieval tower, dungeon, turrets, battlements and drawbridge, belie an enchanting interior of fine art, tapestries and furniture which create the warm and welcoming feel of a home rather than a museum. The castle, set in stunning grounds with three beautiful and varied gardens, is surrounded by the magnificent Cawdor Big Wood, one of the finest woodland areas in Europe, threaded with colour coded nature trails to explore.Visitors are invited to enjoy a delicious lunch or tea with home-baking from our mouth-watering menu in the courtyard café, then browse the exciting range of gifts and goodies in our three shops and, time permitting, have fun on the putting green and short 9-hole golf course which provides enjoyment for all standards.
Useful Information: Bathroom facilities, Baby buggy parking

We realised it would be closed but really wanted to see it so decided to go to the village and take a ride around the area. It is really really gorgeous. It is worth going to the surrounding area anyway but I must say I was so disappointed that we couldn't get any nearer. I live on a lovely island but this place is wonderful.

Besides being so historic, this fortified country house is a longtime family home. The rooms and furnishings are welcoming and comfortable. It is easy to imagine living here and loving it. We reached it via local bus service from Inverness.

My 22 year old son still says this is his favorite castle of a three week trip and we saw a lot of castles. The rooms, artwork and furnishings are wonderful. The gardens are a joy to wander and explore. Charming and located near the Clava Cairns and Culloden battlefield. A joy to visit and a pleasant drive if you've rented a car.

We took a bus from Inverness to Nairn, then a cab to the castle - not expensive and very easy to manage.

Although it was raining during our visit to Cawdor Castle, we thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it. One can easily imagine living in the castle as every room is full of things used by the current inhabitant, the Dowager Countess Cawdor. What fun! The gardens are indeed beautiful, even in the September rain!

Had a good lunch in the cafe on site. If you're in Inverness or nearby areas, take time to visit.
