“Excellent, but not without its problems and expensive”
Reviewed 8 April 2008

My wife & I stayed for a special birthday over two nights in the new cellar "suite", room No. 9. Its not really a suite and while superficially it was lovely closer inspection revealed there were obvious corners cut in its refurbishment (turned out that it was a DIY job done by the owner - not to be expected of somewhere charging £330+ a night). Individually the staff where great and friendly (Jonathan in particular) but communication between them could have been better. In my opinion all the extras were expensive (afternoon coffee, Spa treatments, lunch) and I considered them to represent poor value for money. However the Restaurant is where the Boath House almost fully redeemed itself - the food was simply outstanding and at £55 for a 5 course dinner of this standard, good value. The wine list was also good in both choice and price. Breakfast was good as well and was served in a private annex off the room - lovely concept and except for being a bit luke warm, very tasty. The Chef absolutely deserves every accolade he has won.
Overall my wife loved the place, we had a good time and that is what counted. However, we had little change from £900 for two nights DBB + a spa treatment and some extras which is a lot of cash and personally didn't think that the accommodation matched the price, although the setting and main property are stunning. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Restaurant but, because of the cost, could not recommend the Boath House as a place to stay. Find a nice local hotel or B&B (there are plenty in the area) and use the money saved to eat in the Restaurant more often!

Having just returned from an Easter break at Boath House we may well have found our new weekend retreat. Located 30 minutes from Inverness and 90 from Aberdeen it is well positioned just off the main road.

After prompt service from Jonathon by e-mail to arrange the break, we were met at the front door by Don, the owner, and taken to our room, Number 8.

The room was great. It had a huge bed and the whole feel to the room was contemporary. I believe some of the other rooms were more traditional but we liked the room we had. Off to the side of the room were frosted glass doors leading to the impressive wet room, a seperate WC and washhand basin was located in a small room by the door to the room itself. In the sitting area two seats and a flat screen TV visible form the bed was perfect area for relaxing, and also in this area was a roll top bath. The room also contained a small outside conservatory which was perfect for al-fresco dining, but as it was snowing when we were there it was a no-go one!! The only small improvements that could be made were turndown service with towel replacement and also satellite TV, but hey small gripes in a room that was what dreams are made of.

The hotel is very high quality amd the finishings in ever area reflect this. It also acts as an art gallery which provided an excellent contemporary feel to the traditional building.

The hotels restaurant was superb, lunch and dinner were very good and well presented. Breakfast was a treat too !! The hotel catered very well for my allergies. We also used the spa facilities, which although were small the two therapists were very good and using Aveda and MD Formulations products delivered a very good level of service.

Overall Boath House is small, with only 8 rooms, but the level of service is superb to those limited guests. Don even gave us his jacket as my partner had forgotten his and it was very much needed due to the inclement weather.

All in all superb, thanks to all at Boath House and we will be back.........

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for our first wedding anniversary and it was an amazing experience. I felt as though I had stepped right onto the film set of The Great Gatsby, from driving up the gravel driveway surrounded by gorgeous lawns and gardens, to bathing in the twin bath tubs with candles flickering and a view of the lake. The four poster room was utterly gorgeous (room 3), especially the bathroom, the gounds stunning, the service great (and unstuffy for such a beautiful place) and the 5 course meal was fantastic. It was so romantic and perfect for an anniversary. I actually felt compelled to write this after looking at hotels in Skye for our anniversary this year (my turn to book!) and being astounded at what the Three Chimneys offered for the same price - a very basic room and a 3 course meal, doesn't quite look as if it will match up.........

After an incredible series of stops within Scotland by our five star tour service 'Scotland Calling', they brought us to Boath House, just south of Inverness. What greeted us as we were driven in was a gracious and lovely 200 year old Georgian style estate on twenty acres. The taste and style of the House were impeccable and was a remarkable blend of old and new. Our hosts Don and Wendy Matheson and their staff were wonderful and made us feel quite welcome. The dining and service was exquisite, and the food unforgettable. The grounds themselves are beautiful. It is no wonder they are rated among the top ten in all Scotland. Highly recommended....

This hotel was advertised as a 5 star boutique hotel - in their dreams!! We stayed for two nights. At £350 per night (including dinner), I would have expected this hotel to be luxurious and something very special. Far from it!! It appears to have been decorated "on the cheap" and the room we were in seemed to have been furnished with odd bits of furniture which I presume were bought at the local auction rooms. The quality of the bedlinen was poor albeit clean. The large vase of artificial flowers placed on the chest of drawers had to be seen to be believed. The staff however were attentive and friendly. The food was fine even although portions were microscopic and there appeared to be some kind of obsession with the use a nondescript foam topping. I can't understand how this hotel managed to get itself into the "Connoiseurs Scotland" guide alongside Gleneagles, Stobo and Sheraton Grand. Boath House is not in the same league.

We only spent one night at Boath House, which is a lovely country house hotel but it was fabulous. Relaxed and unpretentious - all the staff and owners were very friendly and extremely efficient. The house is full of local arts and crafts which makes is much more personable and special. The food is also a real treat, especially breakfast. Only a short drive from Inverness airport - a great weekend destination.

Quite simply, we are foodies. We live in NY and regularly eat at some of the world's best restaurants. In touring the UK, we specifically sought out establishments known for their food. The Boath House serverd us 5 of the best meals of the trip, and some of the best meals we've had in a long time!!! They simply could not do anything wrong. The wine choices were flawless, the meals were beyond explanation. Just go and taste for yourself! And the proprietors offered the warmest welcome of our trip - personal, helpful, wonderful. Michelin, get your stars ready. You're going to need three of them!
