“Very large room.”
Reviewed 13 March 2014

We had a family room as there was an additional small room with bunk beds to go with all the space we had in the main area. Pool and sauna were nice and the run to and from the outdoor hot tub was invigorating in the very breezy sea air. Not exactly buzzing in the bar but the Balvenie whisky was good. The breakfast was small but very tasty. Bit of a farce at dinner as we were right beside the service doors (although there were lots of free tables) so asked to be moved and when our meal came the table was too small so had to move again.I must say the chateaubriand was lovely, as was all the food, so worth the moving around! All in all a very enjoyable stay, just a few wee tweaks needed.

Experience of hotel is one of delight and frustration. First the delight; The hotel is perfectly situated with beautiful rooms and views (if you're lucky enough to get one). We booked a two night stay b&b for £99 and got lucky with a really nice 4poster bed with fantastic sea views. The key word is lucky, no guarantees, I guess. The facilities are in line with what you might expect from a 4 star hotel, though as I didn't use the spa/leisure facilities I can't rate them.

Now, sadly for the frustration. You may have picked up from other reviews that the service is indifferent at best, poor at worst. Having been warned (via tripadvisor) prior to our stay I was hoping that things might have changed as the management have responded to complaints on tripadvisor with regards to service in the restaurant. All I would say is if you can avoid it, don't eat at the restaurant. On the first morning for breakfast we arrived at the restaurant to find a queue of about 10 people waiting to be seated, even though the restaurant was less than half full. Eventually we were told to take a seat while tables were cleared. People were generally happy to wait but this soon changed when other folks started queue jumping, chaos ensued. This all came about due to a simple lack of organisation by staff. This would be a recurring feature. We had invited friends to join us for dinner at the hotel and met them in the bar for pre-dinner drinks. Only there were no staff to be seen. I waited and waited. I went in search and found a waitress in the restaurant who then proceeded to leave the restaurant in order to serve my drinks, great for me but what about the folks in the restaurant? At dinner we ordered two steaks, chicken and the vegetarian option. The steaks arrived without the accompanying chips & onion rings which eventually arrived 10 mins later when the steak was cold. The chicken served was the wrong meal and had to be replaced and the cauliflower gratin bore no resemblance to the menu description. Things were made worse when the side veggies were given to the wrong diner and then 2 of the dessert orders arrived followed by a 10 minute wait for the other 2 orders.

Overall a nice hotel, but would I pay £210 a night to stay in the room we were lucky enough to be allocated? Absolutely not. Great hotel rooms, fab location but let down by poor customer care and terrible restaurant service.

Room Tip: Room 27 lovely four poster, jacuzzi bath and fab views over the sea

Thank you for your feedback and glad that you appreciated the upgraded room.

At breakfast at peak times we can cater for 70 guests seated. With as many as 100 guests in house if all guests come down at once this can lead to a few minutes wait whilst we reset tables.

Our apologies for this. Thank you for your comments.

Staying in the gorgeous seaside town of Nairn, this hotel looks great on paper and just as impressive on arrival. The receptionist was excellent, very friendly and welcoming, although sadly this is her last day working there! I was told I had to book a table in their restaurant because it was so busy, although upon entering a half full room my suspicions were aroused....

My French Onion Soup with Gruyere Flute arrived minus the flute, but packed with salt and a rather extravagant amount of rosemary....not a good start(er). My T bone steak arrived after a long delay, I assumed that as the menu suggested the beef was all local grass fed cattle that they had gone out to butcher one for me. It arrived eventually and was....average at best. I didn't stay for dessert. No....instead I rushed to my room and spent most of the evening strapped to the throne, as it were.

The masochist in me thought that since I had time, and since it was included, breakfast would be a good idea. After waiting over half an hour I was presented with quite frankly the worst breakfast I have ever had the misfortune of seeing. One undercooked sausage, cold in the middle, one crasher of bacon, mainly made up of rind and fat, one slice each of haggis and black pudding, cold in the middle and a greasy fried egg. I then glanced at the menu to be shocked to find that were it not included I would have had to pay over £17 for this "breakfast". I left breakfast a little after 8:15am and was the only patron in the room the whole time so being busy was no excuse for the delay, and the cooking was inexcusable. I have since made four rather urgent visits to the bathroom....I can only imagine it was something I ate here. All in all, a gorgeous hotel, but barring lovely reception lady and one friendly waitress, all the staff need a serious lesson in manners, organisation and customer service, and quite frankly the 'chef' needs to be taken out of the kitchen and handed a P45.

What a disappointment this whole experience has been!
Having carefully planned our itinerary for our trip to Scotland, the spa break (booked through Wahanda - who have also received a negative review) was to fall right near the end of the trip, for a relaxed day of pampering. We duly booked and paid for the break, and then tried to get our complimentary spa treatments booked. Even though we called the spa almost 2 weeks in advance, there were no appointments available whatsoever for the day we would be staying at the hotel.

The spa was very difficult to get hold of, and when we finally managed to speak to someone there, they offered us appointments on our day of arrival – at times when we would still be travelling to the hotel. We very nearly decided to cancel the booking altogether, but then decided to change our travel arrangements so that we could arrive for at least one of the treatments. The lady at the spa then also managed to arrange for an early morning appointment the following day, but only for an hour instead of the 90 minutes that were included in the package.

To be fair, the treatments that we did get were very good. The therapist was excellent, and we enjoyed our scrub, massage and facial, but we were short-changed, and it should not have been this hard to arrange everything. The spa informed us that Wahanda constantly do this to them – sell spa breaks without checking for availability. It’s a shame that the customer is the one to suffer, don’t you think?

As for the hotel, there is no way that our room could be classified as ‘4 star’. We were in a grotty little room with a dismal view looking out at the back end of the fire escape. When I complained about this, I was told we could upgrade to a better room for £60 per night. Er, no thanks. We’d already paid enough for this little excursion. The room was gloomy and looked very dated. Half the lights in the bathroom didn’t work. The cupboard was warped and wouldn’t close. The bed was too soft and ‘sproingy’.

Disappointed, we repaired to the lunch room for a bite to eat. We were ignored in the bar for a good 15 minutes before we were finally seated, and it was a further 90 minutes before we had finished our simple lunch of toasted sandwiches. We sat for ages waiting for the bill, and the waiter only deigned to notice us when we finally made a show of walking out in disgust.

On to dinner time, and we once again had a long wait to be seated in the restaurant. While the food was very, very good, the service was incredibly inattentive. We had the feeling that there was insufficient staff to properly look after all the tables, and this spoiled the whole experience. It’s not a terribly nice feeling being completely ignored.

This experience put a complete dampener on our whole holiday to Scotland, which was supposed to be a relaxing ‘Babymoon’ prior to the arrival of our daughter in a few months. We were so miserable in the hotel, that we actually cut our stay short and headed home a day early.

Room Tip: Have enough money to upgrade, because the standard rooms are well below the 4 Stars advertised.

Thank you for your comments. It is always advisable to book your treatments as time of booking as the spa therapist diaries fill quickly.

We stayed at golf view having stayed here a couple of years ago. We made full use of leisure facilities which are great although sadly the outdoor hot tub was out of action. We were just B&B and breakfast was superb. We were given room 41 but when I went to shower there was a mere trickle of water. We phoned down to reception and reported it and someone came to check it. We were quickly given a different room which was actually bigger and better. Couldn't fault the quick response and service provided to accommodate us. We'll definitely be back

We stayed here for a few days recently. The location was good, the room spacious and there was adequate car parking. However the quality of the food, the poorly trained restaurant staff and the apparent lack of anyone in charge was a huge disappointment. The breakfast was a hit or a miss. Two sausages one day and one the next and is a brace of poached eggs not 2? My husband got one poached egg on toast (2 the first day). The cereal bowls were not cleared away between courses. The table d'hote menu did not offer a great choice so my husband opted for the a la carte on the first evening and ordered chicken. A very dried-up piece of chicken arrived accompanied by nothing!. He asked if there should be potatoes and veg. with it and the waitress said no. A while later she came back and said that yes, there should have been potatoes and veg. We suggested that there should be no extra charge so the waitress checked and this was agreed but lo and behold, a surcharge appeared on the bill. Unfortunately we did not notice till we got home. On the second evening we were presented with potatoes along with the main course and then told that we shouldn't have been given them-they were for the next table (we had started to eat them) It was very embarrassing especially as the intended recipients of the potatoes heard this. I found the whole dining experience very slapdash and we will certainly not be returning there.

An ideal warm comfortable lounge to treat my elderly Mum to hot chocolate and natter, staff friendly and accomodating. We were able to view the Moray Firth without the impact of rain and the wind. It's so nice to find a space that is quiet, and light. It's hard to find equivalent places in Morayshire that offer such a wonderful location.
