“Watch out for the supplements”
Reviewed 24 January 2012

This was our second visit and this time we took our 13 year old daughter for a 2 night day. We had booked 2 rooms and were informed when we checked in that we had been upgraded to superior rooms - must be a very quiet time of the year! Rooms were very spacious and had all usual extras. Not all the tv channels worked - disappointing for a teenager! But the hotel did offer free wi-fi - bonus. Had booked a 2 night package of dinner, bed and breakfast. Breakfasts were excellent with full Scottish prepared to order at no extra charge. Watch out for the supplements in the Chaplin restaurant for dinner! Daughter will usually eat anything but there wasn't 2 much 4 her tastes and there were supplements of up to £7 for some items. On the 2nd night we were given a second menu which seemed to be the bar menu - it had a better choice for daughter but again surcharges. £32 were added to our bill - 4 soft drinks, 2 small wines and the rest food supplements. Not really impressed with that - did query bill but told that it was correct.

We couldn't believe our luck when we managed to book this beautiful hotel for £45 and when we noticed this included a full "Scottish Breakfast" (not your usual croissant, fruit and make your own toast scenario offered in many hotels) we did think there had been a big mistake and kept waiting for a tap on the shoulder by the manager. The breakfast was so good and staff so attentive we probably would have paid extra.

We stayed in the more modern but sympathetically designed wing of this mansion and again the rooms were well designed, spacious and nice and warm which was well received as it was snowing heavily when we arrived. Our room also a featured a spotless bathroom with a big bath and a shower so powerful and invigorating it could have knocked the skin of a rice pudding.

We decided not to dine in "Chaplins" restaurant but did have a bar meal sitting on a comfy sofa in front of a very cozy and relaxing log burner. Bar and restaurant staff were very friendly and showed just how much well trained staff can turn a nice stay into a memorable one.

Room Tip: We were offered a room on the first floor facing the lawn area which offered a lovely view and was p...

Stayed here for 1 night on the 3rd December for a company function.
Hotel public areas were very nice. The function itself was very good.
The rooms leave a lot to be desired. We were in the old side of the hotel and the rooms were freezing bearing in mind this is the Highlands in December our radiator was look warm but turned up full blast. The windows were rotten and draughty. We only had 1 thin blanket on the bed. The room was extremely dated with disgusting stains on the carpet. We did ask to change rooms with out success. If you do stay at this hotel make sure you don't get rooms on the oldside especially room 212.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room on the new wing

My wife and I stayed here for two nights while visiting relatives that stay nearby. We booked the room direct with the hotel (01667 453144) for the same rates as advertised online. This gave a better cancellation option should the weather have prevented us travelling (12 noon on day of arrival rather than 48 hours).

We had an executive room which vary clean and spacious. The staff are very helpful and attentive and a credit to the owners.

We only ate breakfast at the hotel, which were cooked to order and very good.

We will definitely be staying at the Newton the next time we are in the area.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the new part of the hotel and book with the hotel direct.

Stayed here for one night on business. Hotel in secluded grounds within walking distance of town and coast/beach. Had great meal in Chaplins restaurant and excellent choice for breakfast. Old world elegance with good efficient staff and modern facilities. Will be back next time in the area.

My boyfriend and I stayed just for one night and had the most pleasant experience staying at the hotel. We arrived after dark and the hotel looked very impressive from both outside and inside. The receptionist was very welcoming and nothing was a problem. We booked a twin room instead of a double by mistake and the receptionist managed to conjure up their last double room for us with no extra charge. The room was lovely and clean, had an old-fashioned charm. The meal in the hotel restaurant was top-quality, with unusual combination of flavours and very good value for money. Service was fine, although I was surprised to see a waitress with dark nail polish on her nails. Breakfast was a bit disappointing due to a group of 6 still drunk/heavily hangover residents who disrupted the peaceful atmosphere of the place. Their order had to be taken twice because they refused to have a black pudding on their plates (!!) and their full breakfast had to be cooked again. The waitress dealt with them with patience, but unfortunately other guests had to wait and we ended up having our breakfast 40min after we came to the restaurant although we came before the drunken bunch. Overall recommended, hopefully such disruptive customers don't often visit.
