“Definatley not a 4 star”
Reviewed 28 May 2013

Booked an executive room as I thought we are old enough to treat ourselves now, expensive, £140 per night with continental breakfast but thought, yeh go on then. Staff were very friendly and seemed efficient, no complaints. The room was small, very shabby with bad staining on the carpet, Bed was rough and falling to bits and the decor was in desperate need of a lick of paint. The bathroom, i think, must have been tiled by a trainee who had obviously failed, broken toilet seat support, broken shower shelves, mould on the back of the soap bottles in the shower and the extractor fan clogged with thick dust, floor heating was restricted to approximately 3 tiles and a couple of the floor tiles were loose. i think £60 top whack would be more appropriate, the room number was 116, to be avoided.

Grand outside but room was disappointing - basic, rather run down, view of roof, not really value for money.
At breakfast had difficulties being able to get attention of waiters in order to be seated and order food.
Supposed to be Conference Centre but hardly any equipment, had to ask several times for help from hotel staff. Ended up moving furniture ourselves.

The surroundings were beautiful, the room elegant, the staff extremley friendly and helpful. If I come back o the Highlands of Scotland again I would make it a point to stay at this lovely hotel. Feel it should be rated a 5 star hotel. Thanks for a wonderful experience!

Room Tip: We were on the second floor with no noise and a beautiful view.

I believe the 4 AA star Newton Hotel in Nairn is on the market. Whoever buys it might need deep pockets and a lot of imagination.

During our stay there were several signs that both the fabric of the building and the service provided were getting a bit threadbare.

Country house shabby chic is old leather chairs with horse hair stuffing, not armchairs shedding yellow foam padding, duvet covers with holes in and rainwater running down the inside of the walls and across the floor of the bar. Pedal bins in the toilets should allow you to dispose of paper towels without soiling your hands – not much use when the pedal doesn’t work and you have to lift the lid and stuff the towels in.

No-one seemed to know how to operate the disabled lift down to the restaurant and it took ten minutes, two members of staff and two retired fire fighters to get my wife out of it!

Both breakfast and dinner were good but let down by little things like there never being enough butter on the table and not enough oatcakes with the cheese for which a £4.50 supplement was charged.

I attended a function in the hotel and steak pie was on the set lunch menu. Some of those who ate it said the meat filling reminded them of one of the nicer things about The Newton Hotel, it is dog friendly and welcomes four legged guests.

A new problem emerged with the cream tea. The scones came with cream but no jam or butter. Several people asked the staff for supplies but it took a good ten minutes for them to arrive and the wee wedges of butter were obviously straight from a very efficient fridge.

The selection of beers on offer in the bar was frankly terrible and on my first night the only draught lager was not running properly and no-one on duty was able to clean the pipes and get it flowing. There was a fair selection of malts but, like many places in Scotland, they were being sold in English measures at London prices.

One of our party asked for a sherry and was told they had none. I pointed to the bottle of Croft Original and the bottle of Harvey’s on the gantry and the barman then served a 25ml measure of Harvey’s Bristol Cream in a brandy glass! I pointed out that this was a fortified wine and not a spirit and should be served in a schooner or 50ml measure. The barman, a local lad who should have known better, put me right and firmly informed me that “We always serve sherry in 25ml measures.” When I discreetly raised this with another member of the bar staff I was more or less told that he wasn’t getting involved!

The Hotel was built in 1872 and the TV sets are kept in totally unsuitable cabinets which could date back to then. The TVs might not be antiques but they are vintage and, unless you do a bit of retuning, as good a signal as you would have had back in 1872, 51 years before TV was invented.

I’m afraid the Newton Hotel in Nairn is looking a bit like Charlie Chaplin’s famous tramp character – sad and shabby.

Nice rooms can't really compensate for the appallingly limited menu on offer. This hotel really only caters for conferences standard hotel guests are tolerated not shown care or consideration. This chain (Oxford hotel group) is a blight on good service. They also run the Craigellachie Hotel (badly)

Stayed at the Newton in Nairn, Scotland during our CIE Scottish Tour. This was an old Castle like hotel with beautiful grounds and period rooms. Antique furnishings, excellent bed and a wonderful, relaxing atmosphere. Deer and other wildlife abound. Great pub and Scottish breakfast. Terrific staff. Quiet and peaceful.

Room Tip: Speaking with other travelers on our tour, all rooms were more than satisfactory.

Hotel was well presented, all the staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was nice, the televisions are very dated and is the only reason I have not scored 5. Food was good. Overall a excellent hotel.

Dear Craig,
Thank you very much for your kind comments regarding your recent stay with us at the Newton hotel and your rating as 'overall a excellent hotel'
As previously noted, we are conscious of the old televisions and it is something we will hopefully address in the future.
