“Not for tourists!”
Review of Wellpark

Wellpark
Reviewed 29 July 2013

The Wellpark is nicely maintained, it has a large war memorial and great open space.

If you are local and you want somewhere to sit in the sun there are worse places to go however I would not recommend it to visitors to the area.

The park seems to be an attraction for locals with 'lifestyle issues', the few occasions I have been in the park there has always been some sort of incident, if you are not from the area and don't know what to expect this can be very distressing.

It is a shame that such a beautifully maintained asset is not a visitor attraction, just a sign of the times I think.

This was once one of Greenock's crown jewels but for the past 20-30 years it has gone down hill will poor maintenance and a profusion of undesirable elements including junkies and drunks. The view however is stunning. The park itself was once the location of the Mansionhouse belonging to the Shaw-Stewarts of Ardgowan and the gates of the building can still be seen as can the old well which gives the park its name. Gone are the days of the old Keep off the Grass times with a vigilant park keeper and the grass can be patchy and thatched unlike the bowling green properties it used to have. The Cenotaph in the centre of the park serves as Greenock's main war memorial but over the past two years, metal thieves have removed some of the heavy bronze chains and have attempted to prize off the statuary. Locals seem in no doubt as to who the perpetrators of these outrages are and fingers regularly point to, 'nomadic' types so common in towns these days.

The park is worth seeing but just don't go alone and NEVER go at night, the area has gone downhill badly in the past few years and is not recommended for unaccompanied strolls.
