“A little tired but still a gem”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

We visited Greenock at short notice to attend a funeral, Our default choice for a short stay would have been the TV comedian's favourite, but fortunately in this case it was full.

The Tontine is an interesting mixture of Georgian and Art Deco, but as previous reviewers have said the décor is getting rather tired (very tired in some places) but despite that, it was scrupulously clean.

We had a premier bedroom i.e. a standard room. It was well appointed and had good quality wooden furniture with plenty of lighting. The only difficulty was downsizing to a standard width double bed - very crowded when you are used to bigger! The bathroom was finished to a standard to match any good four or five star hotel.

The menu was reasonably varied and seemed to be generally of good quality. Of the two evening meals we had, the homemade steak pie was extremely good but the ribeye steak was disappointing. I would recommend going for the 'homelier' dishes. Breakfast is buffet style with a good choice. Alternatives are available on request What sets this hotel apart is the staff.

No need for a carefully crafted questionnaire asking if you felt they cared or made you feel welcome. Every single staff member we encountered, from cleaner to manager, was friendly, cheerful and informative. They really did give the impression that they enjoyed working there.

The worst thing I encountered was bitter served ice cold. Horrible!

Room Tip: Some of the rooms on the top floor have a very annoying background noise. Not sure which ones so che...

Stayed for one night when our house was being renovated, room was nicely decorated with a refurbished bathroom. Dinner was very nice and staff were welcoming. Would recommend for anyone staying in the area - it's nice to have a local landmark hotel that is not part of an anonymous chain!

We stayed one night on a family visit in a premier room at £95 inc breakfast. Check-in was swift, we ordered newspaper which was duly delivered the next morning, and we settled into our spacious room quickly. The room and bathroom were very clean and light, facing the street with a view of Ardgowan Square. The bed was comfortable though I was not keen on the flat and hard pillows. There was plenty of storage, and the furniture was a a nice mix of old and modern furniture and fittings. The bathroom was large and bright, and immaculate. We would have liked a shaving mirror. No bathrobes or slippers. Basic toiletries are provided (shower / bath gel, shampoo, shower cap). In the room there was a kettle etc, hair dryer. Laundry service is available. To note there is no safe in the room, and it was difficult to regulate the temperature without air con - despite opening windows we were feeling too warm (it was a lovely day outside). Overall we thought it was a very nice period room and a fair price.
We had dinner and breakfast in the hotel and also used the bar. The service was friendly and efficient. The prices were low and with that in mind we didn't expect a gourmet meal, and were not disappointed (many main courses at £7-8). All perfectly ok though, given what we paid (though personally would prefer paying more for higher quality). Equally, the breakfast was ok, all buffet, nothing special - would have been nice to have fresh fruit salad and eggs made to order (I would have liked a boiled egg); oh and the croissants were rock hard.
Reception staff were particularly helpful with advise and responding to any requests eg we were able to leave our luggage there during the day after check out (late checkout is £10 / hour).
This may sound like a lot of complaints, but are meant as suggestions for minor improvements, and we rather liked it ... Compared to the Premier Inn, for example, we preferred the Tontine's location, rooms, feel and service, and are certain to return for our next visit.

Room Tip: Quiet rooms with window open face rear

Good, clean (if slightly faded in some common areas) and friendly staff. Breakfast was very good but finishes at 0930 - nevertheless we were very politely received when we turned up at 0945.
The upper level was noisy - suspect HVAC - Again room was changed without any fuss or challenge.
Needs to include cocktails in its bar menu, that aside very good lounge area. As an Old (ex) Greenockian, I'd be happy to recommend this traditional hotel in preference to the more modern choices.

Room Tip: Rooms in upper level may suffer from low pulsating noise (hvac) but better outlook - lower level is...

Booked this for a work colleague he reported back that it is as stated, nice and clean, good food and comfortable beds. He stated it is a little tired internally but the location is great for town and there is plenty of parking available. He said he would stop again

Stayed in hotel for two nights on business and the whole stay was very pleasant/efficient and friendly. The meals were superb at very very reasonable prices. The place is very refreshing when compared to big hotels .The place is near the river-front which is very pleasant to walk or jog

I recently stayed for one night, I found the hotel very comfortable, the staff very friendly, the room was excellent, the food was very nice. The breakfast in the morning was superb, even with fresh morning rolls which is a nice touch. The location is perfect. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone. I really enjoyed my short stay there, and would certainly use it again.
