It's never "nice" to go to a relative's funeral and especially when it's over 300 miles from home but at least my recent visit to Elgin for such a purpose was tempered by staying at the Eight Acres. I travelled alone, a 9 hour train journey from Yorkshire, and arrived at the hotel early evening. My single room was small, but perfectly adequate for my purposes. It had a small wardrobe with drawers, a desk, also with drawers, a comfortable bed and a small bedside unit. The room was heated by a self controlled electric radiator which seemed very efficient. There were tea/coffee making facilities and a hair dryer in the desk drawer. There only seemed to be one electrical socket in the room and I resorted to crouching under the desk to access this before I later realised that there was a flat four extension lead available. The bathroom was again small, but adequate, with a wash basin, toilet & shower. I found the furnishings, décor and lighting a bit drab in the room and this extended to other areas of the hotel. The lighting in the dining room - restaurant - seemed particularly dingy to me, with large brown 1970's style lamp shades over what could only have been 40W energy saving bulbs. Thankfully the food at dinner was very good and made up for the dismal surroundings. I had a 5 course "taster" menu which I really...It's never "nice" to go to a relative's funeral and especially when it's over 300 miles from home but at least my recent visit to Elgin for such a purpose was tempered by staying at the Eight Acres. Breakfast the next morning wasn't quite up to the same standard as think items like the bacon, black pudding & haggis had been kept warm on a hot plate for some time as they were dried up, rather than freshly cooked. The breakfast menu was extensive and many items were available on a cook to order basis, so maybe these would have been a better choice, but for anyone on a pay as you go meal basis they would have found the £17.85 breakfast price tag a bit hard to swallow. The dinner on my first night and also the friendly and accommodating staff encouraged me to rate the hotel as very good, other than those two factors, I would have rated it as average.More
