Owner description: Enjoy some peace among the magnificent ruins of this sacred place, which dates back to the 1200s. Admire the glorious west front, the sumptuous decorations and the atmospheric chapter house. There are spectacular views from the towers. An unruly nobleman burned the cathedral in 1390, and during the ferment leading to the Protestant Reformation of 1560 it was the scene of a violent attack. Please note: The towers at Elgin Cathedral are currently closed to allow the install of a new permanent exhibition. They will reopen on 25 March 2016.

“Very Interesting”

If you are interested in ruined historical buildings then this is worth a visit.
History of the Cathedral is very well explained on information boards situated around the site so making it easier to imagine what the remaining structure must have looked like..

“beautiful church ruins, worth the stop”
Reviewed 25 September 2013

Elgin Cathedral was a great stop. it's beautifully maintained, hard to believe it's almost 900 years old. most of the structure is missing but there are towers you can walk up to see the view. the stairs to the top aren't well marked, walk into the bottom of the tower closest to the ticket kiosk and start climbing. the view from up there is spectacular

Very interesting and beautiful. Also, make sure you drive out to the Bishop's castle to complete your visit. Don't miss it.

In very poor state but really well tended lawns and with some imagination could see that it was once a magnificent building.

“It Was Built When?!!?”
Reviewed 22 September 2013

This was the third or fourth or fifth or? cathedral or abbey ruin I have been to on this trip. I would have to say that if you are in the area, take the time to visit. Even if you are unable to get there during the hours you can purchase a ticket and go through the gates and onto the grounds, stop by anyway. You will be able to take unobstructed photos from outside the wrought iron fencing. It is just amazing that structures such as this were built hundreds of years ago and survive to this day in various states of completeness. This one ranks as one of the best I have seen so far.
