Owner description: Enjoy some peace among the magnificent ruins of this sacred place, which dates back to the 1200s. Admire the glorious west front, the sumptuous decorations and the atmospheric chapter house. There are spectacular views from the towers. An unruly nobleman burned the cathedral in 1390, and during the ferment leading to the Protestant Reformation of 1560 it was the scene of a violent attack. Please note: The towers at Elgin Cathedral are currently closed to allow the install of a new permanent exhibition. They will reopen on 25 March 2016.

“Well cared for ruin in historic area.”
Reviewed 8 May 2014

At one time this was a massive religious quarter of Elgin.
Now cared for by Historic Scotland.(Life membership admits two to all sites.)

“Excellent”
Reviewed 10 February 2014 via mobile

Kids love going to the cathedral, loads of space and plenty of hiding places for kids to sneak out on you! We all enjoy going right up to the top as it has fantastic views if you can stand the height, and well worth going for a look.
Excellent read about the history of the cathedral. We go here often when it's better weather.

“Surprised by it's beauty”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

I've been touring Scotland looking at many castles and abbeys and thought I was about to see 'just another ruin' but was surprisingly impressed with what I found. This is the one ruin that has retained most of the intricate stonework detailing unlike so many others and it adds so much character to the place. Lovely archways adn the cathedral room with it's faces and shields was a lovely surprise end to the trup. Definitely worth a visit!

“Worth the visit”
Reviewed 10 October 2013

Stunning ruins with one building still completely intact. Gorgeous views from the top of the gate tower. Anyone with any interest in history will enjoy walking the site. Very evocative of times gone by.

Easily walkable from the downtown pedestrian shopping area.
