“Only visited for the meal- at Xmas. Not a hotel room stay....”
Reviewed 3 January 2014

Id like to start by saying this was not a room booking but a Christmas party booking and am commenting purely on the service and food of the establishment not room quality or any other service.

My wife and I booked a Xmas meal with the Mansefield rated as 4* "deluxe" as the sign reads.

We were part of a party of friends booked in for the 3 course Xmas meal in December and our party made up other groups/work functions etc.

The price was £36 per head for a 3 course meal only. No wine or drinks provided.

For this price you would expect an exemplary meal served in good time with a good selection of vegetables and potato choices. This was not the case.

For £36 you got a starter of melon, or melon with prawns. The main was a few slices of Turkey, one or two boiled potatoes and some veg. The dessert was a little better with Sticky Toffee Pudding and ice cream- a very generous helping.

The food was served on time, it was hot and after a few drinks very welcome but that was a far as it went service wise.

We had no table service and the function room is at the base of some steep steps. Our round consisted of around 8-12 drinks at about £90 per round depending if we were buying bottles of wine or by the glass.

For this we had to leave our table and collect a huge tray of drinks and carry them ourselves down the 10 or so steep steps back to our table. At no time was any table serviced offered and so we asked to speak to the manager to arrange this (it wasn't advertised in the price- but a 4 star hotel not providing table service? why wear the stars and not bother to deliver?)

This was soon resolved but we were by this point well into our main course and as such during service we could not keep getting up and leaving the table to get a huge tray of drinks up and down the function room whilst the staff were trying to serve our meal. We therefore had water only.

The food itself was reasonable- as in reasonable for a large-chain pub or a hotel /motel chained restaurant. Not becoming a "4 star Deluxe" hotel that's for sure.

I fear had this meal been served in a competitive environment such as Glasgow, Edinburgh or Aberdeen this hotel would have been out of business a long time ago, or at least lost one maybe two of its stars? but being Elgin it thrives as there is little competition in the "4 star Deluxe" variety.

One of the Mansefields' competitors in Elgin was offering the same meal for £24.99 on CHRISTMAS DAY, but somehow managed to still make a profit after charging some £11 less than the Mansefield- How can this be? We paid £11 more for the same meal and had to serve ourself our own drinks for the majority of the meal.

Overall thoroughly dissatisfied and certainly feel charging £36 per head for a three course meal another hotel charged £25 AND had to get our own drinks is unreal.

Again being Grampian, a captive market, little competition or just blatant disregard as for what service actually is I cant seem to pin it down. But the Mansefield SEEM to think this level of service is normal and acceptable. Id like to see them offer that meal for that price in a larger city and keep their doors open.

Save yourself a LOT of time , effort and money and for the same price you can book into the Travelodge and eat the same food for a lot less. Wont be returning as long as they continue to masquerade as a "4 star Deluxe" hotel.

Room Tip: Book a hotel somewhere else.

The hotel was was very clean, the staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. They were extremely generous and have upgraded us to the Clarke suite as gift for my husbands bday. Definitely the best hotel in the area with a 5 star service . Highly recommended!

We recently had our wedding reception here.
RIght from the booking all the way through to actual reception & evening party went without a hitch.
Ross & his staff could not do enough to make sure that our day did not have any hitches.
The food was hot & no complaints from any of our guests, which ranged from 15 to over 80.
We had quite a few guests that stayed for a night or 2 & I have had nothing but great feedback from all out guests.
Thanks to the Mansefield for giving us such a day to Remember.

An invitation to a dinner and christening resulted in us staying at this hotel for the weekend. A long time since we stayed but what a truly lovely stay! A lovely room (shower could be a little better) but that was the only minor fault. One thing about this hotel is that they serve you breakfast and it is hot. A nice buffet for cereals, juice etc but their full Scottish Breakfast was delicious along with hot toast and lovely coffee.
A lovely stay - thank you :-)

Room Tip: We stayed in room 314 this time on the top floor - no problems with it! All amenities including iro...

The hotel is pleasant enough although rooms rather dated they were clean. The hotel was let down by the uncaring attitude of the management who gave the impression that business guests were not really welcome at the weekend. We eat in the Mezzo bistro one night which was enjoyable but didn't really expect the same menu as last year! The second night we ate in the hotel restaurant, other guests were serviced with appetisers while waiting for their meal we selected our meal from the same menu and charged the same price! Having stayed at this hotel on various business occasions I shall be looking elsewhere for accommodation in the future.

I stayed at the Mansfield Hotel this week and forgot my phone charger. When I rang to ask them about sending it to me they said it would cost £25. The incredulation in my voice must have been detected as the receptionist went on to explain that it cost this much to cover the time it takes to send it and the trip to the post office. I rang back the next morning hoping to talk to someone else and confirm the price. The receptionist said she would inform the manager and the manager would ring me. No one rang. So huge black marks to this hotel for very poor customer service. The maximum cost of sending a phone charger within Scotland is £5. As the hotel is within the town centre then the trip to the post office would be no more than ten minutes and I would also presume that my little envelope would not be the only thing a hotel would have to post. The average hotel worker earns less than £10 an hour so I have no idea where the £25 admin charge comes from. I have left things in hotels before throughout the world and in each case things have been send free of charge. If you want customers to return to your hotel, that's what you do! Needless to say, I will not be returning to this hotel.

What a wonderful stay. We had our Wedding respection here and were treated like Royalty, Ross, the owner couldn't do enough for us. The suite we choose was spacious and oozed charm and opulence. The Mezzo restaurant/bistro is now our favourite place to eat in Elgin, with a wide choice menu and wine. The wife loves her cocktails which they specialise in, too. The only small down side is that it overlooks a busy roundabout, but if the wine is flowing and conversations high who cares. Can't wait for our next visit.
