Id like to start by saying this was not a room booking but a Christmas party booking and am commenting purely on the service and food of the establishment not room quality or any other service.
My wife and I booked a Xmas meal with the Mansefield rated as 4* "deluxe" as the sign reads.
We were part of a party of friends booked in for the 3 course Xmas meal in December and our party made up other groups/work functions etc.
The price was £36 per head for a 3 course meal only. No wine or drinks provided.
For this price you would expect an exemplary meal served in good time with a good selection of vegetables and potato choices. This was not the case.
For £36 you got a starter of melon, or melon with prawns. The main was a few slices of Turkey, one or two boiled potatoes and some veg. The dessert was a little better with Sticky Toffee Pudding and ice cream- a very generous helping.
The food was served on time, it was hot and after a few drinks very welcome but that was a far as it went service wise.
We had no table service and the function room is at the base of some steep steps. Our round consisted of around 8-12 drinks at about £90 per round depending if we were buying bottles of wine or by the glass.
For this we had to leave our table and collect a huge tray of drinks and carry them ourselves down the 10 or so steep steps back to our table. At no time was any table serviced offered and so we asked to speak to the manager to arrange this (it wasn't advertised in the price- but a 4 star hotel not providing table service? why wear the stars and not bother to deliver?)
This was soon resolved but we were by this point well into our main course and as such during service we could not keep getting up and leaving the table to get a huge tray of drinks up and down the function room whilst the staff were trying to serve our meal. We therefore had water only.
The food itself was reasonable- as in reasonable for a large-chain pub or a hotel /motel chained restaurant. Not becoming a "4 star Deluxe" hotel that's for sure.
I fear had this meal been served in a competitive environment such as Glasgow, Edinburgh or Aberdeen this hotel would have been out of business a long time ago, or at least lost one maybe two of its stars? but being Elgin it thrives as there is little competition in the "4 star Deluxe" variety.
One of the Mansefields' competitors in Elgin was offering the same meal for £24.99 on CHRISTMAS DAY, but somehow managed to still make a profit after charging some £11 less than the Mansefield- How can this be? We paid £11 more for the same meal and had to serve ourself our own drinks for the majority of the meal.
Overall thoroughly dissatisfied and certainly feel charging £36 per head for a three course meal another hotel charged £25 AND had to get our own drinks is unreal.
Again being Grampian, a captive market, little competition or just blatant disregard as for what service actually is I cant seem to pin it down. But the Mansefield SEEM to think this level of service is normal and acceptable. Id like to see them offer that meal for that price in a larger city and keep their doors open.
Save yourself a LOT of time , effort and money and for the same price you can book into the Travelodge and eat the same food for a lot less. Wont be returning as long as they continue to masquerade as a "4 star Deluxe" hotel.
