“great hotel with friendly staff”
Reviewed 24 August 2013

We stayed at this hotel for a treat for our wedding anniversary and were not disappointed. Check in was quick and we were told where dinner was served and how to get to our room. The hotel is a very old building and there are corridors and rooms everywhere which adds to the character of the hotel. Our room a standard double was the top floor (floor 3) and was fairly large with good storage space, tv, tea and coffee making tray. The view from room 307 is breathtaking. You are looking over the main street and onto the vast hills. Waking up to this view is a great start to the day. As we were on spa package with Dinner bed and breakfast we headed down to the restaurant for dinner. We were advised at check in to book dinner as the hotel had 2 coach trips trips in our first night. The restaurant is large with attentive friendly staff who explained to us the inclusive 3 course menu or we could choose from the main menu at a supplement, water and bread were offered while we studied the menu. The inclusive menu has 3 choices for each course. We really didnt fancy anything off the set menu so opted to have the sirloin steak of the main menu. At £11.95 each as a supplement it was excellent value. The meal was presented very nice and tasted even better. No complaints at all. After a very comfortable sleep we were ready for our breakfast. A good choice of cereals and fruits were available and we were served toast and very tasty hot breakfast with egg, sausage, black pudding, haggis and bacon. We enjoyed the pool and jacuzzi in the afternoon before our spa treatments. The pool area is very clean and we had the place to ourselves which was great. Our spa package included 3 half an hour treatments each. A body salt scrub, neck back and shoulder massage and a facial. It was heaven an our therapist was very nice and courteous. The spa rooms are small but very tastefully done and spotless. The inclusive menu for dinner was changed on our second night so we chose a starter and sweet from this and our main course from the main menu. It was all very tasty with good size portions. In conclusion yes this hotel is in an old building and in some areas it looks a bit tired but if you can over look this, the food was good, spa was soooo relaxing and our room with a view was very comfortable. The hotel is in a great location just of the main street and the staff were very pleasant. We would go back here as Pitlochry is lovely and this hotel is a perfect base to explore this stunning part of Scotland.

Room Tip: Room 307 has a great view and quiet part of hotel

We stayed for 2 nights and had dinner n spa included fantastic value for money. Lovely staff and the receptionist was great. Everything we needed and when I mentioned our door not locking properly it was sorted straight away. We would definitely go again.

The back massage that both my wife and I received was superb, cant rate the girl doing the massage highly enough. Dinner was dissappointing though, the tarte tatin .my wife got was finger food, my thumb was larger! lamb was ok nothing special and dessert was forgettable although breakfast was great, might have been due to our huge dinner the night before. Rooms ok, bit dated and wifi was down

Stayed overnight DB&B for a family birthday. Party of 5, including a 12 year old.

The hotel is ideally located if you are visiting Pitlochry and the surrounding area, and provides ample car parking only minutes form the main shopping area.

Our rooms were in the main building with windows overlooking the street behind the hotel. They were clean and bright, but the decor is outdated and in need of a refresh - they same can be said for the corridors in the main building. Comfortable enough for an overnight stay but wouldn't have wanted to be their much longer than that.

Bathrooms were a bit basic, but again functional for an overnight stay.

We used the pool both days, and whilst it is not big enough for any real swimming was clean and well tended and was ideal for relaxing in. The pool area has a steam room and a sauna which are both clean and effective.

The hidden gem on this trip was the restaurant. The food was excellent and service was great. The DB&B pacakge covers the fixed menu (whihc had plenty of choice) but the a la carte menu has 'upgrade' prices noted indicating the extra cost if you wish to choose dishes from it. No problem mixing and matching. The food is not huge in portion size but it doesn't need to be - the quality and taste make up for that. By the end of 3 courses the portion sizes turned out be just right !

Breakfast in the morning was of the same high standard. All freshly cooked to order and again plenty of choice.

Would go back again if visiting the Pitlochry area

Room Tip: Lower floor rooms get some outside traffic noise

Arrived at 2.10pm to be told checkin is 3pm. The receptionist stored our bags without checking us in and asked us to return at 3pm. When we returned there was a queue of 6 checking in so we joined the queue, after which approximately 30/40 more people arrived behind us.... All part of a coach party. Only one receptionist on duty, and when it was our turn we were dismayed when told we must wait until the complete coach party were checked in. Receptionist said she had to complete the check in for the large party, and actually said 'first come first served' . We were amazed at this because we were actually in the queue BEFORE the majority of the party. This policy is totally unreasonable, and it seems that coach parties take priority over all other guests. There should of course have been another receptionist to deal with other guests if they want everyone to arrive at 3pm. So, first impressions of the hotel were very poor. Our double room at the back on first floor was clean and comfortable as fitting the 3star rating but very very hot and stuffy. Windows stuck, and could only open small window near bathroom very slightly. The heating was on in bathroom and couldn't be turned off so it felt like walking into an oven. This on a warm summer day, so we had a sleepless uncomfortable night and frankly I was glad to get up early and get outside for fresh air. The spa therapist was excellent and we were very happy with our treatments, however the spa area is tiny and has nowhere relaxing to just chill out. You literally go in and have your treatment then you can use the pool area where there are hard plastic chairs to sit on. The pool itself is lovely and has a small steam room, sauna and jacuzzi, and is all very clean. Dinner was included in our package and we had to choose from a very limited menu. It was expensive to upgrade to a la carte. The dinner was only average as it could have been hotter which was a shame as I felt that the ingredients were of high quality, but it was nicely presented by attentive waiting staff. A jug of iced water would have been a welcome replacement for the glass of lukewarm water served. Breakfast was excellent. The restaurant is vast and gloomy and improvements are needed to make it a positive dining experience. When paying these prices for food I expect chilled water to drink and more than one tiny piece of bread with my soup, as well as my wine to be served with my meal, not after I've finished it. I will definitely return to this lovely part of Scotland but I won't be booking this hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us, firstly my apologies on my receptionists poor attitude with regards to her comments, it is hard to deal with other guests while a coach party is checking in I am sorry you had to wait again normally coaches don,t arrive till about 6pm that's why we would have been under staffed. I,m glad you enjoyed your treatments it is a small area and the only place for relaxation would be poolside. Sorry to read you feel our evening menu offers limited choices we have had mixed reviews on this our menu,s do offer something for everyone but alas we can,t please everyone, thanks again for your review

My husband and I booked a spa package as a wedding anniversary treat and frankly it was all a bit disappointing. The rooms were clean but basic and the pool area was clean but that's where the positives end. Included in our package price (almost £200 for a 1 night stay) was a 30 minute spa treatment each. Each treatment was in fact only about 20 minutes long including time to get undressed and dressed again due to the therapist disappearing for long periods of time before, during and after our allocated time slots. The therapist herself was rather underwhelming and appeared to not be putting in much effort (I've never before had a therapist who uses only 1 hand for a shoulder massage). As I said we used the pool, jacuzzi and sauna and this was excellent, well kept and clean with plenty of soft towels on offer. Our dinner package in the evening again left us a little disappointed. We were given a choice of 3 starters, 3 mains (one of which was the vegetarian option) and 3 deserts. Not much choice but we were able to find something that we liked. When it was dished up however some of it was frankly inedible. We were asked if we wanted water and bread and were given 1 glass of luke-warm tap water, and 1 slice of bread from a bread basket which was kept closely guarded by the waiting staff. At no point was our water refreshed or were we offered more bread. I didn't even receive another slice of bread or roll with my starter of soup. The main courses were even worse. The chicken was dry and tasteless and the mashed potato was lumpy and cold in the middle. It very much appeared as if it had been microwaved. This was all served with overcooked runner beans which were watery and soft. The desert was the best of the 3 courses with us both having a rather tasty but small apple tarte tatin. At no point during or after our meal did anyone ask us if things were okay and on leaving the restaurant we could find no-one to complain to, even at reception which is unmanned after 8pm. They did redeem themselves slightly in the morning with the breakfast, with me having the cinnamon French toast which was delicious. My husband was rather disappointed with the lack of choice with the full cooked breakfast as he wasn't allowed to substitute haggis which he doesn't like for anything else however what he did have was freshly cooked and tasty. When we checked out later that morning, still no-one asked us how our stay had been with us just being handed the bill and asked to pay. We did fill in the comment card in the room but I doubt very much we will hear from them. All in all, we were hugely disappointed with the whole experience and will not be returning.
