“Grand for one night”
Reviewed 11 June 2014

Stayed with a mate of mine while on a bike trip. Bit of an old persons hotel to be honest. Average age in the dining room was OAP! Trying to run the place with too few staff. Got a great deal including massage and dinner but to be honest, I now understand why it was a cheap deal. Staff doing the best they could, all friendly and helpful. Food was average at best.
They said a new head chef had just started.
Small pool ( way too much chlorine in it!) and sauna and steam room which was broke. Radiators on everywhere and sun splitting the stones. Fawlty towers feel to it! Funny.
Grand for a night, right in the centre of town.

Room Tip: Don't get one that backs out onto the road, as the place is so hot I had to sleep with the windo...

We stayed here in March on a groupon deal. Having stayed before, we knew roughly what to expect.

The leisure club was excellent although surprisingly empty - was great to have the pool sauna etc to ourselves!

Breakfast was plentiful, tasty, and nicely cooked.

We didn't eat dinner in the hotel at night - not because of any dislike of the hotel cooking but simply because we like to eat out and try different places. I would recommend Victoria's or the Auld Smiddy for an evening meal.

The bar area was quite nice although the selection of drinks is appalling. There's also real attempt to get folk to stay in the hotel and spend a few quid with much better alternatives available throughout the town.

Service throughout our stay was excellent. Staff were friendly and helpful - the Irish night porter being particularly good.

The room itself was reasonable enough but it really could do with some maintenance. It, and the corridors suffer from the same problem: No-one bothers to "snag" on a regular basis in order to fix problems. Cracked light switches, sealant needing replaced/cleaned, chipped furniture/fixings - it was all a bit tired really. Having got a very good rate on a groupon we didn't have *too* much to complain about. Had we paid full price it wouldn't have felt like value for money.

While many aspects of the hotel are very nice, the rooms/corridors really let it down. Would we return? Maybe, but I wouldn't be in a huge rush.

This is a hotel with several strong points but a couple of weak ones. Strong points: the attached spa (pool/sauna/steam room/weights room) - clean, tidy and, during my stay, under-used (which was great for a dip at any time of day). The food, too, was surprisingly good for a large establishment with coach parties passing through - local people dining there for a 70th birthday celebration was a good sign. Less positive: the room was adequate, clean, but the windows were grubby with traces of mould/mildew round them. There were also niggling things: part of the tap was broken and there was no plunger to lift the plug from the wash basin. I could also have done with more bathroom shelf space to put toiletries. Okay, pretty minor, but the devil's in the detail. The corridors had a faintly musty, airless feel ... and the wifi connection, while free, was very slow. But ... you pays your money and this is what you get in a three-star establishment.

Our greeting at check in was poor. We were a group of 10 so had re-confirmed room arrangements twice, but the rooms we were given were not correct, and 3 people were eventually sent to the annexe.

Decor in the foyer and our room was nice but other areas very tired and dated. Our family room was clean and comfortable. We were on a spa break and the pool facilities were nice except there were no loungers around the pool, only patio-furniture chairs which were not comfortable, and no toiletries or hair dryer in changing room.

The food on the set menu was small portions and mass produced. They had a coach party of older people in, and the menu was obviously aimed at them. They do provide for a gluten free diet, sort of. The waitress had no clue! She set the normal bread into the basket on top of the gluten free bread, contaminating it and tried to serve it onto the contaminated plate. The only gluten free desert was a poached pear which was tiny and hard. To be fair, the food served to others on the a la carte menu looked much better.

At breakfast again the portions were stingy and service very very poor. Toast and coffee cold by the time the cooked breakfast arrived, so asked for more, which didn't arrive until after food was eaten or gone cold waiting.

Overall I wouldn't return

We had an excellent room, plenty of space, pleasant view and clean large bathroom. Breakfast for our party was served in an odd way, so we all got our bacon, sausage, egg and tomato at once and had to arrive in the dining room at the correct time. It was very well cooked however. Toast was soft, served in long platters. They should invest in some toast racks. Dining room staff were very disciplined and had obviously been trained to operate in a particular way. The bar area was OK, but at times we had to go and hunt out bar staff, and not all knew how to serve drinks!! We didn't eat here, and weren't tempted to either.

First stay at this hotel, have to say I was surprised at how nice it was, I booked two rooms and when we arrived we were told that we were in the bank house, which is a building outside the hotel, was quite surprised as I thought we were getting rooms inside the hotel, but I have to say our room was lovely, a junior suite, with large bathroom, although our friends were next door but they just had a double room, so when booking you are better asking for the suite as we were charged the same price, breakfast was in the hotel and it was good, continental with full english, and a very clean dining room, service was also excellent, could not fault it.

Room Tip: Always ask if you want a room inside the hotel or request the suite in the bank house

Stayed here with 2 disabled gentlemen. Staff on check in didn't know where disabled ramp and lift to bedrooms was located, they directed us to the front of the hotel and to a lift to our room, problem was the lift wasn't even big enough to get a wheelchair inside and shut the door never mind a carer to operate it, had to go back to reception to be told there was another lift at the back of the hotel, another long push with the wheelchair for me, could of all been avoided if reception staff knew the layout of the hotel, problem was we were on the third floor at the front of the hotel, a long long way to push from the back elevator and in an emergency absolutely no good. I had requested at the time of booking rooms beside the elevator for ease of access and was assured of the suitability, but. On arrival that definitely wasn't the case. Our bedroom had a severely sloping floor and every time we put something on the bedside cabinet it rolled onto the floor, we had to put a towel under everything to stop this. The evening meal that was pre paid was awful, it was a 6 course taster menu, again first course was delivered on a teaspoon for everyone, the 2nd was a child's cup of soup, definitely not homemade, everything about it was awful, second night was no better so all in all a bad experience, we have never had this experience in Scotland before so were extremely disappointed.
