Atholl Palace Hotel
Ranked #8 of 18 Hotels in Pitlochry
Reviewed 6 January 2013

We stayed here for a wedding in January, the wedding was well run with good organisation.

The hotel is certainly very imposing from the outside, the grounds are beautiful and the building itself is very grand. Check in was quick and painless, though the receptionist did not offer a newspaper, did not explain about breakfast or the location of any of the facilities. Not a huge issue but would have been nice. We actually struggled to find the bar, but bumped into the very friendly owner who admitted he hadn't noticed the sign to the bar had been removed in a recent repaint!

THE ROOM - We were in a room that has not been refurbished, which we were a little surprised about as the hotel was not busy. Both the bedroom and bathroom were looking tired but were very clean. Plus points - Very clean, good bathroom toiletries, good selection of tea/coffee - nice local shortbread. No scale in kettle. Bed was comfortable with a proper duvet and no death by sheets and blankets. Annoyances - No bottle of water, for the price I would have expected bath robes and the towels were a bit thin. There is a trouser press (though I don't really understand hotel obsessions with trouser presses) but no iron or ironing board. Instead there is a laundry room, but has one ironing board for the whole hotel, on which the cover was so dirty I was a little worried putting my white shirt on it. Curiously, there were two irons, but one ironing board!

RESTAURANT - We didn't eat in the restaurant as it seemed very expensive so opted for a good local pub (Moulin Inn). There was a good selection at breakfast but the quality was inconsistent - tinned fruit, juice was long life and non refrigerated, beans were hard - plus it was all a bit 'tepid'.

HEALTH CLUB - The health club was small but a nice part of the hotel. However, there was nobody on duty and the cleanliness of the changing rooms was unacceptable. The floors were dirty, everything needed a deep clean. There seemed like there should be a plunge pool but it was covered over.

BAR - The Bar was, well, a bar. It served drinks that were no more or less expensive than you'd expect. Seemed to be a good selection of whisky (I'm not a whisky drinker) - wine selection was a bit of a let down and there was no real ale on tap.

OTHER - Worth mentioning that there is a snooker table, games room with pool, Xbox, PS2 and PS3 and lots of board games, which is great for families. The guest laundry has washing machines and tumble driers free to use.

STAFF - The staff were very friendly.

So, overall review - nice, friendly hotel. We had a good room rate due to the wedding but it still felt the quality of rooms didn't match the price, even with the discounted rate. Though, to be fair, Pitlochry looks pretty expensive wherever you stay.

It's a privately owned hotel and they clearly can't be expected to refurbish the whole place at once. However, as the hotel was so quiet, it was disappointing that we were still in a room that had not been refurbished.

A few little tweaks would make a big difference.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room.

we have been to pitlochry a couple of times now and enjoy the relaxing break the atholl palace is an established hotel with the coal fires burning as you enter the front entrance.the hotel itself is well run and the rooms are decent without being spectacular bearing in mind the age of the hotel itself .we went for a 2 night xmas break at the begining of december dinner and breakfast were included.on the friday was a two course buffet meal which was ample and the saturday night was a xmas meal which was dissapointing although they were catering for 200 t0 300 people.they have a leisure suite with pool the walk into pitlochry is only 10 minutes.i will returnprobably next year so i suppose the hotel passes the test in my eyes.

Room Tip: ask for a room not in one of the turrets

First time stayed at the hotel - bit late in booking but the accommodation was not too far from the main hotel and probably quieter/bigger room (and had benefit of the car right at the door!)

We couldn't have been treated better by the management and staff - the food was amazing (both in selection and particularly in quantity - couldn't manage to eat it all, particularly the afternoon tea, have never seen such a fantastic spread!)

The entertainment laid on was of very high quality, particularly enjoyed the outing to the pantomime - oh yes we did!

All in all, a great time was had by all, made new friends and plan to return soon but definately next hogmanay! The owner was a charming irish "giant" with a name to match!

thanks to everyone for making our stay so grand!

Room Tip: Be guided by the extremely helpful receptionist - her recommendation for the Manor House was spot on...

Have just come back from a 4 day New Year break at this hotel. Like the previous comment I hate to think how much weight I have put on. Had a family room overlooking the front (Rm 346). Wife was happy as it meant she did not have to put up with my snoring and slept in another bed. Staff very helpful and friendly (Enjoyed the Haggis rolling). Wife had two Spa treatments whilst there and she was very happy (I wasn't as I had to pay)!!! New Year's Eve was fantastic from start (7pm) to finish (Don't ask)! The Leg of Beef on New Year's day is something else. Gym is small but does the trick for a basic workout. Pool, not very big but with the Sauna/Steam area very nice and relaxing. Had the pleasure of meeting Finn the Owner and he explained the history of the Hotel and what he is trying to acheive. Whilst previous comments have said some rooms are 'tired', running a Hotel/Conference Centre myself, you only have so much money and you have to prioritise on what gets done - Finn, if you are reading this I reckon you are doing it right. Would we stay again - without doubt, now where is the phone number for weightwatchers!!!

My wife and I stayed here this new year, and what a fantastic experience, the hotel is set in beautiful grounds, rooms were perfect, staff could not do any more and the food...well I think I have put on 10lbs...We were treated like kings and queens, and as it was winter it was cozy in our room and the hotel had constant log fires burning in reception areas when you came in from the cold. The only downfall was, we only booked two nights instead of three...we were just starting to relax when we had to leave...Atholl Palace staff and management, thankyou for the best weekend me and my wife have had..the dancing was a scream, we laughed the whole night long!

The hotel itself is really nice, not particularly cosy because of its immense size, but very old worlde! Our room, 114, was part of the annex that hadn't been updated. The room had classic Victorian high ceilings and sash window but didn't feel very luxurious. The double bed was on the small size, not great with a 6"2 husband and the shower was as powerful as having someone dribble water on your head! Breakfast was very good, plenty of choice and quality food.

When stayed in the hotel during snow and the scenery was stunning. Eating breakfast looking over snow covered mountains was a great way to start the day. The rooms are large and have the kind of charm expected in this lovely hotel. The staff were brilliant and the food was first class. Roaring log fires greeted you in the many lounge areas, which was most welcome. There are very good walks around the grounds and Pitlochry is only ten minutes walk away.
We will definitely be back during the new year and recommend this hotel to all ages.
We loved our stay and thank the wonderful staff for looking after so well.

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the Tummel valley and the view was fantastic.
