We stayed here for a wedding in January, the wedding was well run with good organisation.
The hotel is certainly very imposing from the outside, the grounds are beautiful and the building itself is very grand. Check in was quick and painless, though the receptionist did not offer a newspaper, did not explain about breakfast or the location of any of the facilities. Not a huge issue but would have been nice. We actually struggled to find the bar, but bumped into the very friendly owner who admitted he hadn't noticed the sign to the bar had been removed in a recent repaint!
THE ROOM - We were in a room that has not been refurbished, which we were a little surprised about as the hotel was not busy. Both the bedroom and bathroom were looking tired but were very clean. Plus points - Very clean, good bathroom toiletries, good selection of tea/coffee - nice local shortbread. No scale in kettle. Bed was comfortable with a proper duvet and no death by sheets and blankets. Annoyances - No bottle of water, for the price I would have expected bath robes and the towels were a bit thin. There is a trouser press (though I don't really understand hotel obsessions with trouser presses) but no iron or ironing board. Instead there is a laundry room, but has one ironing board for the whole hotel, on which the cover was so dirty I was a little worried putting my white shirt on it. Curiously, there were two irons, but one ironing board!
RESTAURANT - We didn't eat in the restaurant as it seemed very expensive so opted for a good local pub (Moulin Inn). There was a good selection at breakfast but the quality was inconsistent - tinned fruit, juice was long life and non refrigerated, beans were hard - plus it was all a bit 'tepid'.
HEALTH CLUB - The health club was small but a nice part of the hotel. However, there was nobody on duty and the cleanliness of the changing rooms was unacceptable. The floors were dirty, everything needed a deep clean. There seemed like there should be a plunge pool but it was covered over.
BAR - The Bar was, well, a bar. It served drinks that were no more or less expensive than you'd expect. Seemed to be a good selection of whisky (I'm not a whisky drinker) - wine selection was a bit of a let down and there was no real ale on tap.
OTHER - Worth mentioning that there is a snooker table, games room with pool, Xbox, PS2 and PS3 and lots of board games, which is great for families. The guest laundry has washing machines and tumble driers free to use.
STAFF - The staff were very friendly.
So, overall review - nice, friendly hotel. We had a good room rate due to the wedding but it still felt the quality of rooms didn't match the price, even with the discounted rate. Though, to be fair, Pitlochry looks pretty expensive wherever you stay.
It's a privately owned hotel and they clearly can't be expected to refurbish the whole place at once. However, as the hotel was so quiet, it was disappointing that we were still in a room that had not been refurbished.
A few little tweaks would make a big difference.
