“Lovely stay”
Reviewed 7 July 2014 via mobile

My family stayed in the gate house for 3 days and it was stunning....old fashioned but with great amenities. Yes it cld do with a slight update but it didnt ruin our stay. The hotel was stunning with beautiful grounds. The pool was small but adequate. It says heated but it defo wasnt but after a few minutes you adjust. My only criticism is that the garden area wasnt fenced and my 2year continually tried to run out onto the busy road, we moved the bins to block the exit. Would defo recommend.

Dear PamandAndyGlasgow,

What a lovely review! We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay in our iconic Gate Lodge. It really is the most popular of all of our lodges. Our grounds are also looking fabulous and all of the hard work that our Estates team have been doing in the background has really paid off. Thank you for your feedback regarding the fencing. This is something that the management team will look in to.

Warm Regards,

Atholl Palace Management Team

If you read other reviews for the Atholl Palace, they are either 5 or 1, there's few in the middle ground. So who's right?
Our experience is that the Atholl Palace is both at the same time. The grounds for example; beautiful, postcard stuff - well kept with pitch and putt, walks and tennis courts - a 5. But there's insufficient car parking spaces. We arrived at 15:45 and had to park around the back of the hotel in an undesignated space - a 1. Or the rooms; spacious, nice decor, clean and tidy - a 5. But there's only one chair and no table to sit at (other than the dressing table), The bed is so small that we struggled not to fall out of it to the extent that we considered one sleeping in the separate single bed - a 1. Or the restaurant; lovely setting, panoramic views, good service from the Maitre D and staff - a 5. But the food. A chef who cannot cook a roast beef dinner should not be a chef - fatty poor cut of meat accompanied by a Yorkshire pudding the like of which I have never never see before (and hope never to see again) - a generous 1.
The Atholl Palace - a 5 or 1? You decide!

The hotel grounds were excellent as was the exterior of the hotel, unfortunately internally didn't live up to the 4 star rating. The interior was dated as was the (alleged) upgraded room we had over the two nights, albeit the lounge bar was modern and adequate. Be wary of trying to cancel a booked dinner on the morning, although apparently accepting the cancellation and thanking you for letting them know, they will still charge, although no loss is incurred by the hotel. so keep an extra £60 just in case.
Atholl palace, pass......i wont be back, Pitlochery probably.

Room Tip: difficult to say, the room i had was supposed to be an upgraded newly decorated room, god knows what...

Dear Andy L,

Thank you for your review. As you may have been aware during your stay, we are currently in the middle of a renovation of our rooms and public areas. We were disappointed to read that you were unhappy with your upgraded room as these are our most popular and frequently requested bedrooms. However, due to your feedback, our General Manager will be looking at these rooms for renovation works needed.

If a package is booked at the hotel (i.e. dinner, bed and breakfast packages or bed and breakfast packages), these are fully chargeable no matter if an element of the package is not taken. This is due to a discounted rate being offered on the dinner, bed and breakfast packages for prebooking.

We hope that this goes some way to explaining the points you have made on your review of Atholl Palace and perhaps, we can welcome you back another time.

Kind Regards,

Atholl Palace Management Team

Very impressive building; I thought it had been built as a castle but it turned out to have been designed as a spa hotel (there is a museum in the basement outlining the history). Our bedroom, although on the small side, was clean and adequately furnished. Nice shower ensuite. Evening meals (included in our package) were good, although at times the waiting staff were under pressure as they had a bus party in an adjoining room to serve each night of our stay. Most of the staff had recently arrived from other parts of Europe to learn English and were still "learning the ropes" so there were the occasional few glitches. I couldn't comment on the cooked breakfast as neither my husband or I bothered (too stuffed from the meal the night before). It would have been nice to have preserves available in small jars; serving yourself from a large jam pot was rather messy and unsightly.

My husband particularly liked the swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room and stated "they were the best bit about the place".

Room Tip: Rooms on the front and back of the hotel have great views.

Nice hotel, staff were great, we had dinner on the two nights we stayed the food and the service were excellent, there was so much choice for breakfast would recommend the grilled kippers cooked to order. The spa was good nice heated jacuzzi , the stags head lounge is nice for a quite drink.

The booking of this grand venue our hopes were high. As soon as we entered out room priced £185 for the evening, we were disappointed - a room at a travel lodge would have been bigger. The room was tired and needed a good clean (the taps were filthy). Staying at such a grand location, we thought the breakfast would have least been something special.... a buffet.... and it wasn't special. The table where we were sited, was set with dirty plates and napkins... A real disappointing trip.

Room Tip: Book well in advance to get better value and eat else where.

My husband and I got married here on the 6th June 2014. From the moment our wedding was booked Gillian who was the organiser was excellent who helped us with all the planning of the wedding, the attention to detail was perfect and on the day of the wedding the gardeners were outside planting flowers and plants for us to have the first wedding ceremony on a new location overlooking the Tummel Valley which was beautiful. Met Diane the new organiser who was there to help Gillian on the day of our wedding the two of them were superb and made sure everything was perfect. Barry was our MC for the day and was brilliant and ensured we had the best service. The waiters and bar staff were excellent too. The grounds and the setting of the Atholl Palace is perfect for a wedding big or small and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Have seen some our wedding photos from the gardens and they are stunning.

Room Tip: A room with a view overlooking the valley

Dear Foxydee75,

How lovely that you have taken the time to review us on Trip Advisor! Your wedding was fantastic and we loved the new outside area where you said your vows! Our Estate team are so hard working and will be grateful to hear that their efforts were noted so well!

Gillian loved working so intently on your wedding and both herself and Diane will be thrilled to hear your feedback!

We agree completely that the magical backdrop of Atholl Palace and our breathtaking grounds really would take some beating especially in wedding photographs! We can't wait to see yours!

Warm Regards,
