Atholl Palace Hotel
Ranked #8 of 18 Hotels in Pitlochry
Reviewed 2 August 2014

I chose Atholl Palace because my husband had attended Medical School dances there while at St. Andrew's when he attended 26 years ago. I had arranged a small 50th birthday surprise party at Atholl and the staff was very helpful by internet beforehand and then once we got there. The hotel is beautiful and set in a lovely spot with a lot to do around it. The town is populated with tourists but fun and a nice retreat to return to. The food was not the best I have had but service made up for it.
We were there for two nights. The second night was the party. 2 exceptional service opportunities: 1 our group stayed in the bar way past closing. Rather than shooing us a way the nice barmaid told us to stay as long as we would like. She did not need to do that... She stayed though she said she may not... Very kind of her! 2nd, when we did leave the bar, my husband and I returned to our room to a couple of bats!!! We were warned to not keep windows open for fear of birds but not bats, (I believe it was because our room was next to a wall that had a wet pipe on the outside of it; perfect spot for bats) After trying, along with the night maid, unsuccessfully to shoo the bats we were moved up to the turret room (upgrade) for the night.
The room size was fine and the bathroom quite nice. Atholl Palace did have bar soap. I have noticed that this has not been standard with all of the spots we have stayed. (You may want to take a travel bar along with you)

Went here for our anniversary last week and to sum up I can say it is excellent at some things and average at others so:

Excellent:
Location was stunning, easy to walk into pitlochry and some great views and walks near by. Also when you arrive at the hotel the landscaping is stunning and wow, the hotel architecture is amazing and this continues inside with grand rooms filled with comfortable and smart looking furniture. We loved having a whiskey in the bar in the evening.

We spent a little more and stayed in the turret suite which I would definitely recommend as a lot of other reviews seem to agree. Stunning views, loads of room and no noise from anybody!

Facilities- great range of things to do, walking, pitch and putt, tennis, putting green, swimming pool and spa, excellent free entry to nearby Blair atholl castle etc.

Free WiFi (although range didn't really extend up into turret site) and full size snooker table in basement

Average things:

Service was ok, food was good but not what you may expect from a 4 star.

Indoor swimming pool is freezing (as other reviewers had said) and there isn't any reason for it being like that as they have a purpose built child plunge pool next to it)

Overall I would recommend the hotel just maybe think about upgrading room size (as others seem to complain about standard rooms) and maybe just go for the bed and breakfast options and dine in pitlochry which has an abundance of great restaurants and pubs!:

We had been to Pitlochry a couple of years previously, and had a nosey at the outside of this hotel, deciding that the next time we visited we would stay there. And so we did in July of this year.

The hotel is reached by a long, sweeping driveway within a park-like sloping landscape. Check-in was welcoming and efficient and our room was arrived at via lift and long, high and wide corridors. The creaky wooden floorboards underfoot added to the air of grandeur that this ever-so-slightly old-fashioned hotel emits (we both thought of the hotel in 'The Shining'!).

Our room on the third floor was clean and airy with plenty of storage, a rather small television, but a good sized bathroom. The ever-important mattress was excellent. Coffee and tea facilities were adequate, but as usual there was not enough milk, and nescafe is so overused in hotels!

A perfect Scots breakfast was in place, buffet-style, each morning; however when we ordered an evening meal of fish and chips in the foyer, an average portion came our way. Despite this, a walk into Pitlochry itself is a mere five minutes, where pubs and bars can be reached. Pitlochry seems not to attempt to punch above it's weight, and the fare you will eat is what it says on the tin.

I would stay at the Atholl Palace again for it's convenience and atmosphere - an added bonus is the spa, where I had the most relaxing Swedish massage. And the bar on the ground floor is cosy and welcoming - the sort of place that you can sit alone and read a book whilst enjoying an end-of-day tipple.

We went to the Atholl Palace for a couple of nights as a treat for my husbands birthday and we were not disappointed. The hotel is set in beautiful gardens with paths extending into surrounding woodland. The hotel itself still has its old charm and has an interesting museum downstairs. The room we were given was in one of the turrets and had beautiful views from all windows. The room was large and comfortable with a modern bathroom. There was plenty to choose from at breakfast, with great views over the garden. The staff were friendly and approachable. There was a wedding at the hotel when we were there and we had to wait some time at the bar to be served. The wedding party and guests seemed to be allocated rooms away from the rest of the guests as there were no noise so we were not disturbed at all. We didn't have dinner at the hotel so can't comment nor did we try the pool. But I would definitely be back for a special occasion.

Room Tip: Room 215 has lovely views and is in one of the turrets.

We celebrated an anniversary in July, the weather was perfect for our stay. The drive way into the grounds was amazing, the gardens were well kept and beautiful and a delight to stroll through. The entrance was plush all lounges spacious and airy. The food was excellent with a wide selection to please all palettes. The staff were very professional, helpful and friendly. The bedroom was spacious and comfortable, the only fault from the entire stay was the pillows, which were very hard. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel for all occasions, absolutely luxurious!

Attended a wedding here earlier in July. The wedding ceremony room was very tastefully furnished and well ventilated which was a blessing as it was a very hot day. The wedding meal and reception went without a hitch and we had a great time. The only downside was the price of drinks - Bacardi and coke - £5, pint of Guinness - £4.40. A bit steep. The hotel itself is very comfortable and the rooms well appointed. There are also stunning gardens which lend themselves to good photo opportunities. Staff were the usual mix of Scottish, Eastern European and Spanish and all seemed friendly.
Would stay here again.

Extremely disappointed is an understatement!

I booked the Pamper at the Palace package for 23 ladies as part of my sisters Hen Weekend in December 2013 for July of this year. At the time of booking I notified staff of specific dietary requirements of one of our group and you would think with eight months notice that this wouldn't be an issue especially when I was told it wouldn't be.

Well it was and she was left with nothing to eat due to the lack of attention to detail by kitchen staff! Could you imagine having to sit around others enjoying their afternoon tea while you have NOTHING? After speaking to restaurant staff who assured me that this would be swiftly rectified...which it wasn't in the end she had to leave as it took so long even even a 'Manager' was unwilling/unable to fix the mistake. If this wasn't bad enough another member of our group was left hungry as she is a vegetarian.

I would also like to point out that the manager I spoke to was incredibly rude and clearly service with a smile meant nothing to her!

Its such a shame that the girls in the spa were let down by restaurant staff as they were wonderful, very helpful throughout booking and on the day. All ladies thoroughly enjoyed their treatments...thanks girls!!!

So due to the massive mistake made by restaurant staff I wont be returning and I can say the same for the rest of our group.

(oh and compensation of £49 was offered but considering we had paid £1127 + with drinks I don't feel that really covered the horrific service we received from restaurant staff and management)
