“Breathtaking views and good food”
Reviewed 15 October 2013

We recently had a meal here at Fonab Castle en route to the Enchanted Forest at Loch Faskally. The Castle looks brilliant and the view from the Fonab Brasserie is superb and it was good watching the sun set. There is a really good menu and an extensive selection to choose from. I opted for the north Atlantic prawn cocktail which was very tasty, then the Fonab Burger, which was filling, it was not greasy as I see from an earlier review. The chips nice and chunky and burger good and meaty. My only comment here is that I prefer to eat my meal off a plate and not a wooden board as provided. But that is only a personal view I think the trend for serving meals on bits of wood or slate is a bit OTT. I finished my meal with ice cream and jelly and wow was it good, so many nice flavours and textures. The staff were extremely helpful and attentive, but not to the point that you felt they were hovering too close. Yes we will be back.

Thanks Mike and Stu.

Good morning.

Thanks for leaving a comment on TripAdvisor.

I have passed your thoughts onto Chef and he is taking these into consideration. To be honest i am in agreement with you regarding plates, however as a hotel and Brasserie we have to move with the times and unfortunately using slates and boards is exactly what is in vogue for culinary presentation at this moment in time. The fine dining restaurant (Sandemans), i can assure you, will not have meals served on boards unless it is the cheese course.

We hope to see you again in the not too distant future.

My wife and I spent two nights at the Fonab Castle Hotel in August which was an anniversary treat and it was a most enjoyable stay. We opted for a balcony room in the new wing which was equipped with the most up to date TV; Coffee Maker etc and a very large and comfy bed; the bedroom and bathroom were also furnished to an excellent finish as were all the other areas of the hotel; brasserie dining room with wonderful views over Loch Faskally; the malt whisky and gin room. The breakfast with its large array of choices from the buffet to smoked salmon and scrambled egg to full breakfast was a great start to any day; we also enjoyed a glass of champagne on the morning of our anniversary; a nice touch; the dinners also were very well received. The fine dining room was was not open but it will only enhance what is already there as will the leisure facilities when they open. Last but certainly not least the staff who were all polite and professional and a credit to the hotel. All in all a very enjoyable stay which we have told our family and friends they must experience; certainly we shall do so again.

Excited at the prospect of a top class new hotel near home, we came for lunch soon after the opening, and booked an overnight to check out the accommodation. The new parts of the hotel blend seamlessly with the old, and the open plan bar and brasserie give amazing views of Loch Faskally. We opted to stay in the modern wing, in a very chic room with a balcony and the same lovely view. How good to spend the night in a brand new room with state of the art facilities, a most comfortable bed, and luxury bathroom. Everything is done here with great taste and, obviously no expense spared. A small request for a bit more light for reading, which will become more necessary on winter days.
It was very busy at the weekend, and staff working flat out serving food and drinks. The opening of the fine dining restaurant should help here,as the only bar has to deal with heavy demand! Food very good and service first rate. It would be unfair to pick out individuals, but well done for training the younger staff so well.
We enjoyed breakfast which was relaxing and with very generous portions. Also a lovely fruit and cereal buffet, so everything one could desire.
As we live less than an hour away, a trip to Pitlochry would not normally be a big deal, but our short stay made us feel we had really had a luxury break. We will return to sample the fine dining, which will give the chef a chance to be more adventurous. All good wishes for the future.

Room Tip: Upstairs in the new wing facing the loch for best views.

Good evening.

Thank you for the great review. I'm pleased you enjoyed every aspect of your visit to Fonab.

We take a lot of time and consideration when training the staff, especially in the Brasserie and Reception areas. This is still work in progress as "Rome wasn't built in a day", however i am pleased you can see the fruits of our labour.

Once again, thank you for your comments and we look forward to seeing you here again!

After driving up to the hotel and parking, we were met at the front door with a warm welcome and shown into the dining room. Location, decor, service and the food itself were all excellent, and I would recommend this 100% We chose the Asian Spiced Monkfish and a glass of Pinot Grigio to follow. Considering the stop wasn't planned, I would certainly make a point of visiting again.

Stayed for 3 nights from 9th-12th October. The hotel is wonderful, rooms luxurious and beautifully appointed (castle signature room) but the thing that makes this hotel exceptional are the staff. We have stayed at many luxury hotels but this team have the balance just right, genuinely attentive and caring without being intrusive. A special mention has to be made for Shannon, Matt and of course Gary White who all really stood out. All meals were absolutely delicious. The hotel also has the advantage of not being at all pretentious as some can be. We are already planning a return visit in the near future.

Room Tip: Castle signature rooms are beautiful. will try to request one overlooking the loch next time.

Good morning!

Wow what a great review - thank you so much.

I am pleased you enjoy every aspect of you visit. The staff here are great and we encourage them to be themselves and not pretentious as it is extremely obvious and off putting (i feel) when you go to a hotel and all of the staff seem fake.

The rooms are stunning and certainly the view over Loch Faskally makes makes your experience even better.

We look forward to seeing you again in the future.

P.s. we are also glad you managed to find your watch!

Had an overnight stay on the 9th October and it was excellent. On arrival it was starting to rain and the receptionist came out to us with umbrellas - a nice touch.
The hotel is spotless and beautifully finished - loved the diamante handles on the hotel toilet doors ! The room we had was a good size with doors out to the garden and loch view. Unfortunately it was pouring with rain and blowing a gale so we didn't spend a lot of time outdoors.
The room had a great radio, tv and a nespresso machine although I agree lighting was bit low but that might be down to energy efficient bulbs (my pet hate).
In the afternoon we made use of the lounge and the newspapers and had a wonderful afternoon tea. Lovely sandwiches with thick bread and generous fillings, scones with cream and jam and some very tasty cakes. Also the gin I had with the apples was a genius choice considering when I was asked what gin I wanted I just said 'surprise me'
Dinner in the brasserie was good but I do agree the lighting could be better, it was a bit harsh and the yellow lighting at the wine rack just didn't seem right. Obviously it was dark outside so nothing to see but there are some magnificent trees there so perhaps some floodlighting might be good. Breakfast was excellent. Good produce, well cooked and presented. My husband's fruit salad was a tour de force.
Service from all the staff was really good although maybe a bit much at times. I began to feel guilty about going up and down to the room as someone always got up to open a door for me !
I did feel it lacked atmosphere somewhat but think that was because it was not busy, but it was midweek in October and probably weekends are much busier. Hopefully as word gets around the numbers of guests will increase.
At the price it was maybe a little too much as there was no spa or fine dining and I do think the hotel has to be careful not to be too exclusive.
Overall though an excellent stay and I attach before and after photos of afternoon tea.

PS Molly was a delight.

Good evening.

Thank you for leaving a wonderful review on TripAdvisor. I am please that you enjoyed your visit on the whole to Fonab.

The lighting across the hotel is being looked at and is a work in progress. We don't have any energy saving light bulbs in the spot lights as they are all LED. This is the cause of the sharp brightness within the Brasserie which again we are working to try and make more subtle.

Regarding service, we are following the criteria set out by the AA and VisitScotland which is basically the Tesco saying of "every little helps". This is why every time someone comes to a door we have staff opening and closing them. We will however take your comments into consideration and tone it down a touch.

Once more id like to thank you for leaving us a sterling review and we look forward to seeing you again in the future at Fonab Castle Hotel.
