“Great Stopover”
Reviewed 12 October 2008

We were only spending two nights here on the way up and on the way back from Orkney. We found it a lovely hotel. The room was spacious and although at the front it wasn't noisey. The staff were friendly and helpfull (and very busy) and the food in the resturant and bar was also good. Would stay there again.

  • Liked — cosy and comfortable with friendly staff
  • Disliked — The narrow treads on the staircase...but as a old property there is not a lot that can be done

Excellent hotel - clean nice and everything. A big plus is the pub and the restaurant, you can have food in both. A minus is the shower - just not enough water pressure, so I took a daily bath instead.

4 of us (all newly retired) had a mid-week break at this quaint quirky hotel in September. We booked by phone, having stayed there briefly a few years ago. We were impressed with the helpfulness of the person taking the booking. He paid great attention to our requests for adjacent rooms - in fact, we were even told our room numbers!
When we arrived, the welcome at Reception was immediate & cheerful, & we were shown to the rooms & helped with our luggage - very welcome, given the steepish stairs of this 300-year-old drovers' inn.
The rooms, in the original part of the hotel, were spacious, adequate & comfortable, with plenty of hanging space, tea- & coffee-making facilities & TV.
The dinners from the French chef were first-class. Fresh, locally sourced venison, scallops to die for, fresh vegetables & imaginative puddings made for memorable evenings.
The staff were friendly but not in-your-face, giving us advice & recommendations when requested, & our preferences at breakfast after the first morning were remembered - in fact, we were treated like royalty.

I was surprised by the negative comments from a (very) few reviews of this hotel. While it does not have the glossy amenities of a 5-star Hilton Hotel, it does have the charm of a personally run, welcoming Inn, and true hospitality. Nothing was too much trouble, requests were paid attention to, and taxis booked with no fuss.
We're planning our return visit(s).

A lovely quirky little hotel, full of charm and history. We just stayed overnight and really enjoyed it.The rooms were average, clean and traditional,as was the food, but good value for the price.I would give the fish and chip cafe which is situated on the high street a miss though. The fish was all dried up inside the batter..not edible at all.

The area is also a outstanding with some great shops and two distilleries to visit, which are a must. This is a great tourist area and we were so lucky with the weather.

  • Liked — Friendly staff clean rooms great location
  • Disliked — hotel food could have been better, but it was ok

I booked the Moulin Hotel to coincide with a birthday celebration for my fiancee (Waleska) who is Brazilian and was her first visit to Scotland and wanted to make it a memorable experience and the Moulin was my first choice.
I had previously stayed at the Moulin some years ago and at that time I was very much taken with the appearance externally, the character internally, the very very friendly staff and of course, the cosy pub tasting the real ales !!!!! The service and range of food served was excellent to say the least.
This time of visit we met up with some old friends whom we had not met for some years John & Jan from Bannockburn, this was their first time to stay at Moulin and were highly impressed with everything on offer, nothing had changed from my last visit, I struggle to think on what the management could improve on as the Moulin has everything you could want.

Happy Visiting to Scotland !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jim McAuley & Waleska Bandeira.
