Good Indian with views over to Arran. Plenty of parking. However building falling apart and interior nothing special.

Went to this restaurant with an intention of having drink and dinner. We started with beer and 2 starters..but the food was salty and not very tasty. So we dropped the plan of having dinner and asked for bill. To our surprise, the waiter as well as the owner told us that they prefer customers who take main course .. not starters and beers.

We were taken aback by the comment .. this is our first time and quite disappointed with the treatment.

Ayr doesn't have many Indian Restaurants, and it would be very easy to miss the Ayr India Tandoori, tucked away as it is at the southern end of Ayr Beach on top of what looks like a municipal concrete beach shelter complete with peeling paint.

Don't be put off by appearances though. Ayr India has quite a few things going for it, including a great location. It's perfect for watching the orange and red sunsets west across the sea to the Island of Arran as you linger over dinner. Its not very often that an Ayr sunset fails to impress!

OK, on to the restaurant itself. It has been around forever and is something of a neighbourhood mecca for locals in search of some good hearty homestyle Indian cooking. Its not a posh place by any means, but a laid back, friendly 'bistro' run very well by Mum, Dad and the kids.

Its not unusual to hear a bit of local gossip and familiar banter between the customers and the staff. Tourists and visitors are made every bit as welcome as the regulars. I have been quite a few times before, but its been a long while since my last visit, and I was glad I made the effort, not least because the menu had changed a bit in my absence and I was keen to try something new.

After the order was taken a plate of poppadums complete with onion salad and spicy dip arrived at the table to keep us going. Yummy!!! The starters were very good, especially the chana poori, and the main course was decent too. The naan bread definitely got top marks and was hot and tasty. I can't imagine many people ever make it to dessert here. All I needed after that was a good walk along the promenade to watch that famous sunset.

There is a car park right outside the restaurant which can be reached by heading south along the seafront road from Ayr (if you don't mind lots of traffic calming bumps in the highway) or by heading south along Racecourse road and turning right at the traffic lights by the Chestnuts Hotel.

For a relaxed informal experience I can recommend it.
