“Another excellent meal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 January 2012

Again an excellent meal - I had the venison which was perfect and once again the 'to die for' cheesecake! Front of house staff were once again excellent and friendly - we'll be back!

“The Hollybush Inn = Fabulous”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 January 2012

I have eaten at the Hollybush Inn many times and I am happy to say that my meal in December was one of the best. I currently live in London and you could honestly put some of the restaurants down here to shame! The service was fantastic and the girls always had a smile on their faces. The food was delicious. My boyfriend said his steak was the best he had ever had and being half Argentine; that’s a complement.
We went there for a special meal with my nana and it was a fantastic memorable experience. We will come again and again and again. Keep up the good work.

PS the price was fantastic.

“Faultless - We now have a new family favourite!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 January 2012

We have two or three staple restaurants locally in Ayr that we always go to but on the recommendation of a friend I booked a family lunch for five at the Hollybush Inn and quite frankly I won't be going anywhere else now, it was that good.

FIve of us at three courses each equalled fifteen empty plates and it didn't cost the earth either. Staff were great, service was quick but never rushed.

In short it's a quality establishment and you will not be disappointed.

“Good food, good value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 January 2012

Visited The Hollybush Inn for the first time in years only because we had heard that it kept changing hands. It's still very clean and tables are well spaced making sitting with friends very comfortable. Even the background music is to my taste!

Sweet Potato, Chilli and Coconut soup intrigued me, as did Devilled Pork in a Port sauce and I have to say both were very tasty. Our friends had steaks and Chilli Beef strips with rice main courses which also got high praise. And the bill for four of us having three courses with side orders and drinks, just over £90!

“Don't understand the negative reviews at all”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 January 2012

We have in 2011 eaten at the Hollybush a number of times - each time the service has been friendly, efficient and the food has been very tasty, and very nicely presented, lots of little extra touches and garnishes. It is a mixture of high quality pub food i.e. the usual things such as haddock and chips, steak and ale pie, but done very well. It also has other items which are much more restaurant - a monkfish dish which was superb, king prawns in tempura which were light as a feather. They also have a Friday night steak night where 2 sirlion steaks and a bottle of wine are £36, or £40 for fillet. And they can cook steak no matter how you want it done.

It isn't a Michelin Star place and doesn't want to be but it knocks spots of most of the local competition in that the kitchen consistently deliver pretty faultless food without getting into a flap and the serving staff are excellent even when under pressure and things just keep arriving as expected without delays or disasters.

We have eaten there twice in December, once for their £13.50 for 3 course menu available up to 7pm - everything we had was well cooked, good quality. No complaints.

We went with my parents on Xmas Eve and again had the set christmas menu - we had the pate and garlic bread, soup, steak and ale pie, a haddock, chicken dish - everyone was happy with their choice.

We have booked for Hogmanay Night for the £45.00 5 course menu - but as it wasn't oversubscribed, instead of offering this, the entire a la care menu was avalaible at £15.50 for 3 courses, or £5.00 extra if you wanted an 8 oz fillet steak!

So we had a butternut squash soup with coconut and chilli ( very smooth with a kick, delicious), 2 smoked salmon and crayfish starters (smoked salmon wrapped around crayfish in a sauce, with salad and asparagus - it was a large serving and totally delicious) and final starter was duck pate with brioche. Again very tasty.

For mains, 3 of us had the fillet steak, one blue, one very rare, one well done. All as requested. The number of times I ask for a blue steak and get a medium rare but here they can cook it just as you ask for it. The other main was fillet steak strips as a chilli/cashew stir fry - it was an enormous portion, my mum enjoyed it very much but was defeated by the quantity. No complaints at all on anything - bearing in mind in some places the fillet steak and pepper sauce alone would have cost you £20.00.

There were at least 12-15 main courses to choose from, and 8 -10 starters, and 8 puddings so really if you couldn't find anything to suit you are hard to please.

To finish we had two cranberry pavlova with cherry ice cream (the ice cream was superb), a kumquat cheesecake (a little too sweet but i should have suspected that), and a chocolate and chestnut tart, with blood orange ice cream served in a brandy basket. The tart and the ice cream were very good - ok Michel Roux on Masterchef would have said the pastry was too thick but so what....it was a nice dessert and the ice cream was very very good.

It was sad that the inn wasn't full but the people who did have hogmanay dinner got the bargain of the season, compared to the other possibilities locally.

I couldn't recommend it more. It isn't fancy food, it won't intimidate people, it does what it says on the menu. It doesn't have jus here and jus there and everywhere a jus jus it is plain speaking and starightforward but good ingredients cooked with flair and presented very very neatly. They don't go overboard on vegetables/spuds, but concentrate on the main course.

To pay £20.50 on a major 'evening' for salmon/crayfish, fillet steak then a pudding has to be the bargain of the season. Four of us had dinner, and two bottles of wine for £120! I have paid so much more for so much less or worse, for really poor quality food served without even a smile.

The welcome is there from the moment you arrive and the staff do a great job even when they are busy. Diners from Glasgow or Edinburgh may consider it not 'exciting' compared to some of the possibilities they have on their doorstep but for a rural inn, the Hollybush really has to be commended for being so much better than other rural pubs think they need to be.
