As I am preparing to make reservations for the Tam O' Shanter Cottage I came across the following review. I must say it is totally unfounded. I have stayed at this cottage several times over the past two years and each time I have found it to be perfect, immaculate, well fitted and befitting of the word 'Luxury'. The owners are responsive to every need and have gone out of their way to help us whenever we need assistance. The flat is the perfect mix of an old stone home with all the modern conveniences. The ‘American’ king size bed is certainly a plus for us, as is the open kitchen/family room. The extra folding table and chairs provided (2) are great and are an excellent addition to expand the already ample seating. In addition there is a table and chairs set on the garden patio. The bathroom has a large tub with a rain head shower. At first glance it looks difficult, but there is a simple trick, just set down on the ledge and turn around into the tub. Once you know the trick it is easy. The location is splendid; just steps away from Rabbie Burn’s birth place, it is surrounded by history and nearby gardens. The flat is located in the heart of Alloway Village, where breakfast at the Poet’s Corner is a must and a trip to the Alloway Post Office will surprise you with an array of gourmet ready to heat meals and a nice selection of wine and other foods and necessities. The comfortably fitted, warm rooms and the super convenient location, make it our home away in Scotland. I have stayed at the Tam O' Cottage several times over the past two years and each time I fall in love all over again with this cozy, immaculate, well fitted flat and quaint village.

Based on online photos and old reviews this appeared to be a cute cottage to spend a week in Ayr. Pictures can lie. On the surface it is a cute cottage but I would prefer cleanliness & safety. The chairs for the fold-up dining table were stored under our bed but they were so dirty and covered in dust we had to wash them before we could sit on them. There was a build up of dust on the baseboards around the bed, cobwebs on the light fixture, mold around the windows, cracked tiles and mold in the bathroom, broken fixtures in the sink & tub, a kitchen outlet not properly sealed to the wall, a gap in the flooring from one room to another, extensive black mold in the laundry area, leather sofas in need of a good cleaning, a huge dusty plant in the main living area that we kept walking into, and it goes on. How this rental could be advertised as luxury with a 4 star rating is beyond me.

“Disappointed”

Listed as a "4 star luxury" apartment couldn't be farther from the truth. The kitchen chairs were folding chairs stored under the bed. They were so dirty, we had to wash them before we could use them. The off white leather couches were in desperate need of a thorough cleaning. There was black mold on the walls of the laundry room and around some of the window frames. Cracks in the bathroom tiles, a broken faucet on the sink, and a corner tub that was extremely difficult to get in and out of. Especially for any one with mobility issues or the elderly. There was a gap in the floor where one bedroom met the kitchen/living room that anyone could trip on. The outside patio in the back was very overgrown and dingy - not a place you would enjoy sitting. There were issues with the pilot light going out resulting in no hot water. A service man was called in to temporarily fix that problem but all the other issues were basically ignored. As a matter of fact, according to the owner: "Black mold is NOT a problem. Over 80% of the homes in Scotland have mold"

Thank you ever so much for taking time to review Tam O'Shanter Cottage - Rhona and I are delighted you had a safe trip home to N.America, after your week with us in Bonnie Scotland.
We are genuinely, dreadfully disappointed, and sorry that your stay was not everything you wished, expected, and indeed deserved. We all work incredibly hard, in this rather manic world of ours, and deserve our vacations to be a haven of enjoyment, and time to "recharge the batteries"- thus our heartfelt apologies.
Tam O'Shanter Cottage is not, and would never wish, nor strive, to be a slick, homogenised , holiday apartment/condominium.It is a unique Historic property situated in the famous Alloway Village, mere feet from World-Famous Scottish Poet, Robert Burns' Birthplace - his little thatched cottage built in 1759 - to which people come, from the world over.
As such when, in 2005,we purchased and,at expense, totally renovated the historic property - such was obviously done, within the restrictions of the Conservation Planners and Historic Scotland. Thus, along with the great privilege of owning, and indeed staying, in such a Historic Property come the little foibles those restrictions bring. The odd little uneveness of the floor.A very small area of discolouration/"mold" on a 200 year old, foot-thick sandstone wall,in an outer-cupboard housing the Boiler and washing-machine. Also should you choose not to dine at the new Breakfast Bar, the requirement to slide a larger table out from under the Super-King Sized 4 Poster Bed - and yes, perhaps give the chairs a little dust.
The "Off White Leather Couches" are actually modern couches but in a yellow vintage-leather(which may have caused a little confusion), in empathy with the property - and in fact had their annual clean a mere 6 weeks before your arrival, where a specialist spends an exhausting(!) entire day cleaning and nourishing the Leather with creams and conditioners.
As a Longhaul Pilot on the Boeing 747, I obviously travel extensively myself staying in myriad properties. Therefore, I fully appreciate that, with the best will in the world, the odd time things do indeed malfunction. What is then critically important is how that is dealt with.
Thus ,when there was a problem with the hot water, within a couple of hours we had an Emergency Engineer on site to repair - and indeed order a brand new Controller, which has now been fitted.I then personally drove to Tam O'Shanter Cottage, unfortunately you were out,and delivered an "Apologies Card" in which I placed £50 for you to have a little meal as a small gesture of thanks/apology for your inconvenience.
My wife,Rhona, has been letting Tam O'Shanter Cottage with great success for 7 years now - one only has to view other Reviews and a burgeoning Visitor Book with heartfelt compliments and thanks - and yes, also the odd grumble about the sunken bath! She also runs our 5 Star Bed and Breakfast, which has a wonderful 100% Rating with Trip Advisor, and Awards for Excellence.
She takes very seriously the experience of our Guests who pay us the ultimate compliment of spending their money to stay with us, and delights in the countless people who return year, after year,to Tam O'Shanter Cottage, often bringing/recommending other friends and family.
Thus please, once again, accept our very genuine apologies that, very sadly, your experience was not everything you, and we,would have hoped.

“Fantastic - the only place to stay in Ayr!”

The Tam O'Shanter Cottage is wonderful - the photographs make the cottage look wonderful, but it is even better when you get there!

The facilities are second to none and you will never find a more comforatable bed to sleep in.

The corner bath is delightful as is the mood lighting, however those less agile may be put off by having to climb in and out a a fitted corner bath unit to access the shower.

There is so much to see and do in an around Alloway and Ayr not to mention Ayrshire and there are so many wonderful restaurants to visit you will never go hungry.

The owners are wonderful hosts and very welcoming. It is fantastic that the cottage is pet friendly especially as there are so many walks on the doorstep.
I will definately be staying in the cottage again - hopefully in the not too distant future.

Liked best: The perfect location and the cottage itself as well as it being pet friendly - just wonderful :-)
Liked least: If I had to pick anything it would be that there was an apartment above the cottage, but that would be really picky!
