“A good place to get "stuck"”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

We were supposed to stay here for two nights, but due to a medical problem we couldn't fly home, so we ended up spending eleven nights here. First, the staff was outstanding. We received friendly, helpful assistance. A special "thank you" to Morven at the front desk. I only recall two imperfections - 1. we stayed in rooms 15, 16, and 19. In two of those, the shower controls would not provide ample hot-to-cold range. 2. the laundry prices were excessively high. The food was excellent, and the presentation was noteworthy on several dishes. The facilities were clean and in excellent repair. The atmosphere was more personal due to the relatively small quantity of rooms (forty-something). All-in-all, this was a great place to be stuck.

Room Tip: Room 19 does not have any view.

Fairfield House is everything and more that one would expect from a 'proper' 4* hotel. the Location is wonderful, we were allocated the Arran Room, it was a very large room with chairs and a table in front of the bow window overlooking Ayr Green and the river. The bed was large and very comfortable and the room was very quiet. The staff were most friendly and helpful and the ambience in the hotel was perfect. Would certainly return to this hotel.

Room Tip: the Arran room was lovely

We stayed here one night for an event in Ayr. The room was large and light but definitely not for people with allergies - thick tapestry hangings behind and over the bed. It seemed clean enough until we went into the bathroom and found an unflushed but used toilet (sorry for the tmi) and flourishing mold around the shower. We were tired and it was only for one night so we didn't make a fuss, although we later found that the plumbing was generally very noisy.
We were also starving so we had an evening meal which was good if quite pricey and a couple of drinks in the bar. The staff were all very friendly and the breakfast was ok.

Just returned from a 6 day stay whilst at the Commonwealth Games. A thoroughly enjoyable break - very friendly staff, excellent food (and if you've time have the afternoon tea scones - they're to die for),
Very spacious , peaceful rooms with lovely views (even in the bathroom!) - we were in
Sovereign- and very comfy beds , what more could you ask for.
Would definitely return and recommend .

My Second visit here the first being fine. We were put in the Churchill suite which was big, but pink and flowery and oh so tired .. with old brown furniture & peeling paint, no working ceiling lights and shower mould. but that was not the worst of it! if you've ever been on a ferry or near a ships engine room then that is the noise level you get with your suite a horrible rumbling 24hours a day + the often high pitch plumbing whines which wake you in the middle of the nite. & just to top it All off the heat was unbearable even with both windows fully open (no A/C) oh and once the windows were open you had more extractor noise & a lovely view of the roof with the rancid fumes of the kitchen flowing in to your room. Staff were fine but this suite was a total expensive let down.

Room Tip: ask for an outside room only nothing near the kitchens or middle of the hotel oh and make sure its a...

We really enjoyed our holiday, and were particularly impressed with the friendliness of the staff. Nothing was too much trouble.
The reason we decided on four stars not five was the restaurant where there were 3 areas which we felt did not reach the level of the rest of the hotel.
Firstly breakfast. Not being big fans of a fry up we stayed generally on the Continental, which was disappointing. No bread or rolls were available: only toast. We asked about the rolls which were on the menu, but were told none were available. Cheese was in small plastic packs which required greater skill to open than we possessed. The ham shown on the menu didn't exist either.
Secondly, the rosette menu consisted of just 4 main course choices which didn't change all week. Having booked an evening meal on certain evenings we would have hoped for a greater choice.
Thirdly, booking dinner in advance was a mistake. It was charged at a fixed rate of £25 per head, and not being big eaters who wanted 3 courses, we made a significant loss on the deal compared with what we would have paid if we had simply paid on a "pay as you go" basis. We then found out that drinks were charged additionally, which is not unreasonable, but meant we paid over the odds for the food, but were charged on top of this for drinks with the same meals.
This isn't meant to be too negative - I'll repeat we enjoyed our stay - but the restaurant was not as good as the rest of the hotel.

Room Tip: The sea view is excellent but only available from a small number of rooms.

We booked a standard room for a two night stay after a nearby wedding. When we arrived we were disappointed with the room as it was very 1970s decoration with fancy curtains and border and what looked an old bed with no valance. It certainly did not look as good as the website pictures. We complained to reception and to give them their due they upgraded us to an executive room without argument which was very large and nicely decorated.

All the floorboards (and I mean all) in the executive corridor creaked badly.

Breakfast on the first morning was very poor although we had a nice table. We had to wait 15 minutes to order the food from a very offhand waitress and then waited a further 25 minutes for it to be served. The waiter said the plates were very hot but they weren't and neither was the food. The scrambled egg was the worst I have had in a hotel and I didn't eat it which is unusual. The next day with less guests the breakfast (not scrambled egg) turned up whilst I was still eating cereal. They need to sort this out. As a result we did not eat dinner in the hotel so cannot comment.

The hotel situated very well for the shore.

We would not stay again in view of the above.
