“It is what it is - a traveller's hotel”
Reviewed 15 August 2014

I was born and brought up in Prestwick and was back for the first visit in 20 years. There is a lack of accommodation in the town - plenty of pubs though - so this seemed a good choice, particularly as it's been fairly recently refurbished.

Location ok - on bus route if needed and about a mile walk to Prestwick. Good parking.

Room ok - 2 queen beds, lacked any character at all. Bathroom adequate but dull.

Breakfast was good but staff a bit disorganised.

I particularly dislike the emotional blackmail at checkout with the donation for their chosen charity. It is optional but as it's on the bill when presented, it is hard to ask them to remove it. I'd much prefer to be asked if I would like to donate before presented with the bill. I'd still have said yes but it would have been my choice. It's only £1, but it's the principle.

Bar area ok and drinks a good price, as was the room.

We had high expectations for our overnight stay at the Carlton, the reviews have been, on the whole quite good. We have no major complaints but the experience was just, well, a bit disappointing.

Checking in we stood alongside another couple who had been given the number and access card for someone else's room, not a great introduction and slightly concerning on a security and privacy basis. The reception staff were not falling over themselves to apologise.

As soon as we entered our 'executive' room my husband said "it's just like a Travelodge". The room was small, had the same open-plan wardrobe/shelving unit I've seen in many Travelodge / Premier Inns. The most disappointing thing was that the room looked directly onto the hotel carpark and next door houses .... with no net curtain. So the only way to get privacy was to draw the curtains. This would be such an easy thing to resolve.

There was a lack of staff training, both housekeeping and front-of-house. The remote control was broken, light bulb not working, tea/coffee caddy dirty, mop and bucket of dirty water left in the corridor, long rail of coat hangers (conference style) left in our corridor all night and through to when we checked out, our corrideor smelt strongly of damp / musty. Restaurant staff unpolished; not speaking clearly, unrefined and then taking customers to a table for breakfast that hadn't been cleared from previous guests is just wrong. Ask them to wait at the entrance whilst you clean it. The poor chap who was sitting there was sprayed with table cleaner as the waitress tidied it up.

We had a bad nights sleep. Worst of all was the lorries coming into the car park from 4am. Sounded like deliveries to the hotel and maybe rubbish collection? Right outside our bedroom and no-one can ignore the reversing beeps of a large vehicle!!

Breakfast was very average.

On the plus side we had a very nice meal in their Logans restaurant and we stayed at Carltons on a deal from Itison. I think I would have been annoyed if I had paid full price for what, essentially was a Premier Inn experience with a nice restaurant.

None of these annoyances were enough for a full blown complaint although I did mention as we checked out that we had been disturbed by noise and that the bulb had blown in the room. Everything (apart from room size) I've mentioned is easily solved .....

Room Tip: Ask to not ben in one of the rooms looking onto the car parks!

I was very disappointed in the service when visiting the carvery with family. The staff were all over the place but not doing anything. We waited ages to be served. Every drink and every course had to be chased up as they were so slow ! We had to wait an unacceptable amount of time for dessert. When it eventually came one of them was the wrong dessert and had to go back. We then tried again to get the attention of staff for cutlery and ended up getting up from the table yet again. There seemed to be no management around. At one time when we were trying to attract staffs attention there were two members of staff wiping the same table. We just couldn't get anyone's attention. When we went to pay the bill up at the till as we could not get anyone again, whoever was taking the bill hardly acknowledged we were there as he was too busy looking out of the window and didn't even turn round when handing the card and bill back to us. Also on the bill the 3 glasses of wine we had were all different prices and different wines... We would have expected the same wine when we asked for the same again. The only one thing I can say was that the carvery was very good as usual.

The recently renovated hotel presents itself nice and easygoing.
The rooms are adequate with a sufficient bathroom/shower facility. Especially good is the reading light in bed. Perfect!
The restaurant is on the medium side. Breakfast ist good and sufficient.
The staff is very friendly and helpful but more or less lost. If there is not anybody who tells them what, when and how nothing gets done in time. Just one example: Cleaning the table does not mean spraying it while the salt and pepper shakers are still on it and leaving the edges dripping with whatever came out of the cloth one is using.
Other than that the hotel provides most of what is needed (no safe, no refrigerator though).
Very positive is the free WiFi in your room!

Room Tip: Try the north side, this way the traffic through the parking lot does not bother you.

We stayed in this friendly hotel for 8 nights for a holiday, taking in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, golf in Ayrshire and a trip to Arran. The staff bent over backwards to make our visit enjoyable. Our room on the ground floor was very comfortable, breakfast excellent and evening meals very tasty. We ate in the Carvery when it was open, otherwise in the Logan restaurant. The staff were very helpful and friendly. From the hotel we could easily get to the railway station either by bus or taxi. Trains to Glasgow were fast and frequent. Several excellent golf courses were within 15 mins drive. We would certainly recommend this hotel to our golfing friends.

We recently stayed at the Carlton for a couple of nights.

I had emailed them before we arrived explaining that we would be arriving before 11am. Although check in is not until 3pm, our room was ready. This was brilliant.
As the bedrooms had no safe, Eoin (pronounced Owen) offered to safely store them for the duration of our stay and we duly had them returned upon check out.

Our room was a suite. We had a lovely comfy super king size bed from which we could watch the wall mounted 42" lcd tv. There was a Jacuzzi bath, soft white towels and beautiful toiletries in the bathroom.

Late on the first evening we asked reception for a couple more pillows. Within 5 minutes they had arrived.

Breakfast provided a good selection of food and all the staff were first class.

The hotel is at the edge of Prestwick. 6-7 mins walk takes you to the town centre. Plenty of different shops and places to eat. We found the location good for walking to the train station. It only takes just over 10 minutes.

To be honest, for value for money in the Ayr area, the Carlton would be hard to beat. It is clean, quite modern, in a good location and provides excellent value. But what takes it to that next level is the friendly and helpful staff.
