Owner description: Iona Abbey is one of Scotland's most historic and sacred sites. Located on the Isle of Iona, just off the Isle of Mull, it was founded by St Columba and his Irish followers in AD 563. As a celebrated focus for Christian pilgrimage, Iona retains its spiritual atmosphere and remains an enduring symbol of worship. The abbey church was restored at the beginning of the 20th century, whilst work on restoring the living accommodation began in 1938, following the foundation of the Iona Community. Today, the Iona Community continues the tradition of worship first established by St Columba 1,450 years ago. To mark the 1,450th anniversary of Columba’s arrival, Iona’s magnificent carved stones have been redisplayed in the Abbey Museum. New interpretation panels, audio guide and souvenir guidebook are also available.

Usually manage about an hour in abbey type place but 3 hours later we had to leave to catch the ferry. Magical and mystical place, beautifully restored for all to share. Really lovely in a beautiful place. A must do if you are anywhere near Mull

Lovely day on Iona, visit the bay at the back of the island if you go, its only a short walk and its well worth it. It was so nice the day we went we both got a little sunburnt so pack the cream just incase. Views from the little mountain are also lovely.

Iona is a great place to visit, and the Abbey is a must do. We were in Tobermory, and given that most of the roads are single track it takes nearly two hours to get there, but it is well worth it, especially if you return by the scenic route, where the views are spectacular.

This is such a worthwhile day trip if you are visiting the Hebrides - just a short (and cheap) ferry trip from Mull. This is a beautiful Island and Abbey, which is steeped in tradition and religious history. Very peaceful.

A place of worship and pilgrimage for 1500 years. One need not be a Christian to appreciate the setting, tone, and history. Take your time, listen to the informative audio guide, and consider yourself lucky to be there. A very interesting out post during its time.
