After much anticipation and waiting, having watched the refurb of this Icon of Linlithgow over the last year or so we visited the week before Christmas. From my own personal experience, opening at this time of the year is exceptionally difficult to get right. It takes time to get service practice right and to develop a sense of identity for the restaurant. There are always small snags which always happen, but these are magnified at this stressful time of year. The food was good, not brilliant yet, but promising for the future. Service was attentive but unpracticed, multiple servers trying to take same order without knowing some one had already taken it. Couldn't pay by card easily as machine broken. Had to wait ages at bar to pay (big sin for bar service). Overall friendly staff and good food, but not brilliant yet. Good signs for the future and if teething problems are sorted out it looks like this will be brilliant!

After eagerly awaiting the reopening of my favourite pub is was to be sadly left wanting.
It was the Sunday before Christmas, it was quiet, cold and generally lacked atmosphere. We only stayed for one drink, a very well poured pint.
We left after the Bar maid (well presented) blew her nose in her hand then continued to pour a pint, The excess number of staff milling about but completely unable to clear an empty packet of crisps from a table, wipe it clean and reset the chairs. At least 2 people came in from the rain and left without being served at the bar.
The final straw was what i would describe as a "manager" in a grey suit eating with his hands over the condiment and cutlery trays.
Poor show.

I think that in the years the star has been closed our memories become rose coloured. I came through to join friends as the restaurant hadn't been open in time for my last trip. There were 9 of us, 7 adults and two children. The venue lovely as it should be and the menu very extensive. The staff were all very young and helpful but not so when it came to the wine, we questioned if we had the right kind and the fact it was not chilled, this was changed but in all honesty not what you would have expected at £5 a glass. One of the children ordered fish fingers and whilst the adults were pleasantly surprised to see freshly battered fish goujons the child wasn't. The food was nice, I had steak pie and although there was nothing to fault it wasn't the best I had ever tasted. As the title suggests we may have fonder memories due to the time it was closed and I will certainly go back with perhaps more realistic expectations for what is in effect pub grub.
