After visiting the castle we were ready for a pub lunch and went to The Four Marys based on TA reviews. We ate in the bar area although they do have more dining seating in the back. The selections were more expansive than we expected of a pub. In addition to the regular menu, there were daily specials and lunch specials. We decided to try the lunch specials - 2 for 10 pounds! My husband had the battered haddock, shrimp and chips served with a salad and I had the lamb stew served with carrots and green beans. We shared an excellent starter of chunks of delicious breads to dip in olive oil and thick balsamic vinegar - 4 pounds. The only negative was I found the stew gravy too salty. Otherwise everything was excellent.

We've visited The Four Marys a few times now and have yet to be disappointed. The menu is vast but unlike some other pubs the food always comes out wonderfully cooked and very tasty. Great beer selection including several guest beers and the service is always friendly and accommodating.

We were part of a party of 20. The girls who looked after us were brilliant- efficient & effective with no fussing about. All the food was of a good quality and reasonable sized portions. Good value for money. Would go again.

Okay, much of the menu IS PUB grub fare - fish & chips; chicken tikka. But I had salmon hollandaise, and while it wasn't Michelin-star level, it was GOOD. I'd say two cuts+ above standard PUB fare. The presentation WAS excellent, and the vegetables were both fresh and properly prepared. Best of all was the staff. I interacted with 3 of them, and each was friendly, efficient and knowledgeable without being obsequious. Rare in any restaurant but virtually unknown in pubs; BEST wait-staff I've encountered in the UK in 10 years. Decor plays on local legend Mary Queen of Scots, but is appropriate given its setting (near the castle on the tourist route). Good place for a pleasant relaxed meal when you want something better but not expensive. Prices were surprisingly reasonable.

Staff were very helpful, finding us a table on a busy night even though we hadn't booked. The food was lovely and very good value and there was a very extensive wine list.
