“Unbeatable location”
Reviewed 12 August 2012

We spent two nights in a tipee in early August 2012, and we really couldn't fault the campsite.
Sally and Dave who run the campsite are friendly, helpful and on-site for a lot of the time. They meet guests at the ferry and take all the luggage to the site, and drop it back down for you when you're leaving - this made it easy to bring extras like folding chairs which really added to our stay.
The tipee was spotlessly clean, and had lots of space - there was two of us but you could sleep six adults more than comfortably in one. It came with thin camping mattresses, rugs and beanbags.
The shower/toilet block was scrubbed every day, and the place was very well maintained. There's three sinks for washing up and a communal fridge. Disposable bbqs are available to purchase - perfect for the local burgers and sausages Sally and Dave can source for you.
What made the trip for us was the location - it's overlooking Cape Clear's south harbour, and we even sat outside the tipee and saw six dolphins playing in the water beneath us one morning.
It's also just a stroll from the island's two pubs.
There were several families staying at the same time as us, and it really is a family-friendly campsite - I find it hard to imagine rowdy groups fitting in.
As far anyone mentioning creepy-crawlies - well, you are still camping!

Thank you, it's lovely to hear you enjoyed yourselves when you stayed with us. We do try our best to ensure you have a relaxing time! Wow, dolphins so close to you, they are amazing creatures aren't they? We had basking sharks in the water just below us earlier in the year - they came in almost daily one year!

Hopefully you will come and stay with us again next year, we love that our guests return year after year, it's lovely to get to know people.

Best wishes,
Sally & Dave

We have just returned from the most amazing break on Cape Clear. We had visited the island ten years ago and had forgotten what a beautiful haven it is. We returned as parents of three young children and what a great time we had. The children loved the 'adventure' of staying in a yurt and had a ball from the minute we boarded the ferry in Baltimore. Our party rented a yurt and tippee and found both to be immaculate and really comfortable. We are already trying to plan for our return trip. This is a well cared for site and Sally and Dave were always on hand to give advice or help with transporting bags etc.

Hi Denis,

Thank you for the great review, and for taking the time to write it. We do hope you come back again next year to enjoy the beauty and relaxation found on Cape Clear.

We have been amazed at the way all the children staying on the campsite this year have got on so well and made friends straight away. It does help when the kids are happy playing all day, it's lovely to see and we've enjoyed watching many a game of soccer played on the site!

See you soon!
Sally & Dave

thanks so much to sally and dave for the camp trip of a lifetime. we stayed in one of the tippees which was so bright spacious and clean. it made the little bit of bad weather we had all the more bearable with two small kids. the pictures of the setting look great but you cannot appreciate the true beauty of it all till you get there. there are views across the island's bay as well as up onto the hills that are just breath taking. kids made lots of friends on the site and the island lends itself to a beautiful mixture of relaxation and activities. the facilities are fantastic, pick up from ferry, toilets, showers, sheltered wash up area, communal fridge and washing machine and dryer at a small cost. thanks so much... we will be back...........

the stay at Sally & Dave's was an experience of a lifetime, the drive up and onto the site is beautiful. Sally was unbelievably welcoming and helpful, there is a great sheltered wash up area overlooking the view, the showers were fantastic, very hot at any time of the day, spacious and immaculately clean. We stayed in the yurt for five nights and it was a holiday I will never forget, probably one of the best we've ever been on. The yurt is huge, it has a very comfortable double bed, a gas stove with everything you could possibly need; pots, utensils, salt/pepper/oil etc, wardrobe space, a couch that could be used as a double bed, icebox to keep food cool, drinking water and a stove with complimentary firewood. The stove heats the yurt almost immediately and every night we had the door open on onto the view and were still warm, it was truly amazing. Outside the yurt there's a picnic bench for each yurt where you can eat breakfast. I cant say enough how generous Sally was, she was so friendly and helpful and I would definitely recommend the place to anyone, you wont regret it. The island itself is breathtaking, the land is so wild, out on our walks we encountered rabbits, foxes, goats, the shop is a little expensive and food in restaurants also but with the facilities we had in the yurt to cook it was never a problem, just bring alot of your own stuff instead of waiting to buy it on the island. Ciaran Danny Mikes (local pub) is a lovely spot, very cheap and comfy couches right beside the fire which is always lighting. The whole experience was a 5 star one, would definitely go again. Thanks again Sally.

Room Tip: seen both the tipis and yurts, both are amazing. if you have the extra money obviously the yurt is a...

We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and would love to see you again sometime. Good luck with the Art course Samantha and with your Art careers, I'm sure you'll both do well. Thanks also for the card, a lovely thought. Sally & Dave

Myself, my sister and 2 friends stayed in a yurt at the campsite and had a wonderful time. The service was great with the owner coming down to meet us off the ferry and drive our bags up. The yurt was stocked full of everything you could need including a bed, cooking facilities and even a little stove to keep it cosy. The inside of the yurt was clean and spacious and beautifully decorated and there were candles and solar powered lighting for when it got dark. The campsite's washing area and toilets were very clean and we were able to have lovely hot showers in the morning. The highlight was the beautiful view down across the bay and it really felt like a little bit of paradise. I would highly recommend going.

Thanks so much for all your nice comments! We try to keep the showers and toilets immaculate, though the odd moth does fly in at night as we leave the lights on! Please ask about or loyalty points if you are coming back this year! Sally
