“Great Golf course”
Review of Carlow Golf Club

Carlow Golf Club
Reviewed 1 July 2014

Recently played Carlow Golf Club on June 14th with Kavanagh,s Bar golf society. I have to say I found it a wonderful course with no 2 holes alike. Every hole gives you something different to think about and you get full use of your set of clubs. The course was in brilliant condition and the feeling was that everyone can't wait to play it again. Really enjoyed the day even if my standard of golf did not match the surroundings. Also great value for money with our society

Very well organised competition here last Friday. The course is simply superb and in wonderful condition. The welcoming committee were very friendly. The food and facilities were first class. My brother from Chicago had a great day. The only negative was the Club Pro could have shown more of an interest and provide some visitor information.

Carlow's deerpark course is a challenging yet enjoyable championship golf course. Every hole on the course offers a unique challenge, where your club selection and skill are constantly challenged. Each hole is memorable in it's own right.
The first is a very difficult long par four, with a pond left of the green. A par here is a good score.
The second is the 2nd shortest par four on the course. A driver from the tee is risky, with out-of-bounds left and a hidden pond right. Most members tend to play for the ridge around 100 metres short of the green. This requires a tee shot of 180 metres or so.
Hole three is a short par 3 with bunkers left, right and to the rear, and a hollow in front of the green.
Hole 4 - uphill, make sure your sceond shot is below the flag - downhill putts are to be avoided on this green.
5 is a par 5, dogleg right, reachable in two if you get a good tee shot away.
6 is another par 3, around 165 metres. There is a wonderful view of some of the back nine from this tee.
7 is the index 1 hole, with neither pond or bunker to trap the golfer. The problem is getting home in two to a green that is elevated and tucked into a hillside. Very difficult hole.
Hole 8 is played from an elevated tee that overlooks the Barrow valley with the Killeshin hills in the background. Specular vista, and a great hole, hitting the fairway is a must.
9 plays back to the clubhouse, slight dogleg right, plays to a tricky green.
After the delights of the front nine, you might think that the back nine couldn't be as good. You'd be right - it's even better.
10 is a short par 4 with the second shot over water. A tee shot of 160 metres will ensure you stay out of trouble (bunker left, pond right), and leave a short iron to the green.
11 is a tough uphill par 4 laid out before you from the tee.
12 has a deep hidden valley short of the green that must be carried with the second shot. Take a moment to enjoy the view before teeing off on 13, another gem of a short hole.
14 presents a challenge to the best of golfers, a par 4 here is rare.
15 plays alongside a wood to the left hand side. The depth of the green can be deceptive so make sure you allow enough club, especially for back pin positions.
16 is special. Make your own mind up about it after you play it.
17 is index 18, but a par is a good score. Hitting the green is imperative.
The round finishes with a sweeping par 5 bringing the golfer downhill back to the clubhouse. A good teeshot shoud start just right of the mound on the fairway, with a slight draw. This will set you up to try get home in two and finish a memorable round with a birdie.
Carlow golf course bring every club in your bag into play. It is important for the casual visitor to contact the club in advance as the course is generally quite busy. The soil is free-draining, so that Carlow is dry when all courses around are wet.
