“We loved this hotel and will be BACK.”

We had a really lovely time at the Old Groung hotel in Ennis County Clare.
The room was beautiful, spotless and very spacious. The bed was so comfortable and the room was quiet so an excellent nights sleep.
The restuarant was also excellent, we had dinner there both nights it was so enjoyable, and the staff were efficient and most importantly very friendly and helpful.
Ennis is also a lovely town with alot of traditional Irish music in local bars all within walking distance from the Old Ground.
We will be going back soon and thoroughly recommend this hotel.

The hotel is well located. The rooms are a decent size and the rate was very competitive (mid-August). We were there on a golf trip and will be back. Restaurant next door (part of hotel) is very good.

I can’t cite a lot of experience with the property, as we arrived in the evening and left the next morning. However it was quite comfortable, clean, and in good repair. The staff was friendly and helpful. We made one call to the front desk to request more towels and they were delivered immediately. The breakfast and dinner were quite good. There is a nice coal fire in the lounge with a wonderful collection of old books, include a wonderful science textbook from 1916. The hotel is extremely convenient to the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. Our room overlooked the Ennis Cathedral and the bells went off just a bit early in the morning. Ah, well! Note also, that there is no porter or bellman, so you carry your own luggage, although there is an elevator.

If it helps, here are the hotel GPS coordinates:

We stayed here as part of a large family group in August of 2011. All total, we had 5 rooms. The hotel must be slowly remodeling their rooms because there is an enormous difference in the quality of some of their rooms. 2 of the 5 had been completely remodeled with updated bathrooms, freshly painted rooms and new beds and bedding. 2 more of the rooms had remodeled bathrooms, but the rooms smelled of smoke (despite being non smoking rooms) and the bedding and carpets were threadbare. The last room was absolutely awful. The bathroom tiles were falling apart and there was mold throughout the bathroom. Again, threadbare bedding and very dark, dingy room. We were told by a local that this hotel used to be the old prison. It explained a lot about the layout of the hotel, which feels very institutional. The way the rooms all face into a center courtyard keeps the air from circulating very well and there is no air conditioning. Despite it being only around 70 degrees, our rooms were all stifling.
The common areas must also be in the process of a slow remodel. Some places were definitely beautifully decorated, while others had sofa's that were terribly stained and in poor shape. (I do understand that they use a lot of antiques in the hotel, but these needed some care!) It seems like this is the place to stay while in Ennis. It is perfectly situated in the town and walking distance to the bus/ train station. Make sure to request one of the newer rooms if you stay here!
*We had a great dinner at Rowan Tree Cafe Bar; check it out!

Room Tip: They have newer remodeled rooms, so ask for one at check in!

I stayed here for one night.

The hotel is centrally located, just a short stroll from the train station. It is situated off a main street. There is a nice outdoor seating area outside the entrance.

The reception area is nice and bright and has plenty of seating areas.

Check-in was quick and efficient and the staff member was extremely helpful and gave me plenty of information about the hotel and the various facilities within the hotel.

It’s worth baring in mind that it is an old hotel. While this is not obvious from the common areas downstairs it becomes very apparent once you go upstairs to the bedrooms and corridors.

The corridors have very creaky floor boards and the décor could do with being updated and refreshed.

My room was at the end of the corridor and in a corner. The room was an odd shape. I came in the door and there was a wall directly in front of me with a wardrobe and suitcase stand. The main part of the room was actually behind this wall so you had to go around the corner and down a slope to the bedroom. The room was large with a fairly big window. But what I found strange is that their was no ceiling light and the only lights in the main room were two bedside lamps which didn’t provide much light.

There was a wall mounted flat screen television which was positioned very low on the wall which made it difficult to watch if you were sitting in bed. It was barely at waist height.

The bathroom décor was poor. There was a sink with a unit build around it but no front on it so you save the u bend as there was no pedestal either. The unit didn’t fit properly into the alcove and there were gaps either side. It was clean but it could badly do with being renovated.

My door had a lock that didn’t work and for some reason there was an old chubb lock on the door that didn’t work either.

You could here a lot of noise at night from the corridor and other rooms.

I ate in the bar that night. The food was pretty good but the portion sizes are huge so go hungry. The best point of the hotel bar was the staff. They were excellent, really friendly and helpful.

The breakfast is good. The hot food selections are excellent but the cold foods could do with more variety. They could do with having a selection of cold meats and cheeses and a better selection of breads as all I could see that morning was brown bread.

Again the staff in the breakfast room were excellent.
