This is an excellent hotel in the perfect location when visiting the South West of Ireland. It's centrally located in Ennis which is no more than 45 minutes from all the sites. The reception staff are warm & friendly. The rooms are large with comfortable beds, sitting room, ensuite shower with a proper power shower, tea/coffee making facilities, trouser press, iron and hair dryer in the room. The rooms are not air conditioned but a fan was provided promptly. Breakfast is continental or cooked or both and the full Irish is grilled with a choice of poached, scrambled or fried eggs. There's also a grilled plaice option which I found surprisingly light & tasty as a breakfast. There are two restaurant options in the hotel. The O'Brien Room would best be described as modern Irish and The Town Hall is more fusion food. We tried both and the food was excellent. There's also excellent Traditional Music sessions in the bar from Thursday to Sunday nights. All that coupled with the relaxing residents areas on the ground floor means you wouldn't need to leave the hotel at all. The bar/restaurant service was a little scatty but in the overall scheme of things, this was a very minor point.

We stayed at the Old Ground hotel just one week ago, and are amazed at the negative reviews of the place. Perhaps the hotel has been recently refurbished? The room was huge, with a large and comfortable bed, nice new furniture, lots of light and an immaculate and large bathroom. We stayed on a weekend and the restaurant, lounge and bar were packed with the locals. The staff was helpful and obliging. I would stay here again and would recommend it to anyone touring the area.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. Just about got car parking in the hotel. Reception were very friendly. First impressions were very good. However, our room was a disappointment. It was a bit dated but a very good size. It was clean.
The bathroom was a big let down. Very old fashioned, tiny and the grouting looked dirty. It needs serious updating.
We found it very hard to sleep at night. We could hear the family next to us and their young children very clearly. The Church bells (though nice) prevented us from a lie in. Overall, it was a bit of a stuffy, noisy hotel room with people stomping up and down the corridor. We didn't find the beds comfortable at all.
However, the food was great. The Pub was great, the staff were great. The food in the Town Hall was great. Overall atmosphere was really good.
We just won't return because we didn't get a decent wink of sleep all weekend and really did not like our room too much!

The hotel was spotless, The services was excellent, and the staff are a credit to the hotel. The rooms were clean and tidy, and the food was beautiful, The location is perfect right in the heart of Ennis walking distance to shops and pubs plus a short drive to the fine golf courses,

The Old Ground is organising walking weekends in the Burren. I went walking recently with Tony Kirby. Tony is a mine of information. He stopped now and again to admire a tree or a plant. Flowers not out yet. The pace was brisk on Saturday and more relaxed on Sunday. Fantastic weather and lovely views.
The Old Ground Hotel is comfortable and lovely to return to after a hard day on the karst. Dinner with the other walkers was interesting and fun. Food was great and service second to none.
I was disappointed that I was penalised for being single. I thought that hotels had stopped doing that!!
Hope the walking weekends are a success for the Old Ground and for Tony Kirby.
